Présentation de l'éditeur

Will her true identity be discovered? That would be fatal...

Charlotte is no milk-and-water Miss. Fom childhood she has had to cope with scandalous whispers, selfish men, abandonment, and lately financial and legal hardship. Judging by her own family's aristocratic connections, she considers society a bunch of useless popinjays.

What will happen when Charlotte is forced to stay with those noble relatives in the guise of a young, innocent debutante? There is at least one person in London who could recognize her, and could cause instant ruin.

Given her precarious position, falling in love with a handsome earl's son is the last thing Charlotte expected, or wanted. James has no idea of the secret impediments that prevent any happy outcome. Charlotte for her part is adamantly set against anything illicit; she has had to fight too hard for respectability to give it up, even for love.

Can these two lovers overcome the obstacles fate has put in their path? James in particular will have to use all his wits and wiles in a situation that most men would consider hopeless.

Note: This is the novel which gave rise to the Amberley Chronicles. The series currently comprises nine books, each with a complete arc.

En savoir plus sur l'auteur

May Burnett lives in Europe when she is not travelling, and mainly writes historic romance/fiction ranging from the Regency to Victorian times. She likes art travelling, languages, classical and jazz music, and books of many different genres.

She greatly enjoys feedback from her readers and is very grateful for every honest review.

Her longest series is the Amberley Chronicles. The chronological sequence to date is as follows:

The Impostor Debutante (1817)
My Last Marchioness (1822)
The Sister Quest (1823)
Catching a Rook (1823)
Lady Anthea's Choice (1823)
The Perils of Lord Pell (1825)
Margaret's Turn (1826)
A Scandalous Journey (1842)
The Late Heiress (1843)

The mood and degree of sensual content vary somewhat within the series. Though these stories are basically escapist and without literary pretensions, May likes to include at least one realistic/serious theme in every book.

May plans to add at least three more books to this series.

The Winthrop Trilogy is somewhat darker, as the inciting incident (not described in detail when it occurs) is a serious crime with long-reaching consequences. There is also a death in the first volume.

Lady Susan's Bargain (1817)
Lord Fenton's Revenge (1819)
A Lady's Ruse (1821) - to be published in October 2015

Standalone Regency:

A Priceless Gift (set in 1811/1812, gothic elements)

Other books:

New Olympus Series: originally written for a YA audience, these light-hearted stories have been known to please adults too. These are three linked novellas about the children of Greek Gods in the contemporary world, with strong romantic elements (but no sex).

Teenage Goddess
Teenage Star
Hell on Earth

Werewolf Stories:

Originally published under the pen name Mary Burnett, UNDER AN ASIAN MOON contains a series of linked first-person stories about an expatriate banker werewolf in Hong Kong, who undergoes a drastic career change when his professional duties and werewolf nature clash. These stories are all over the place, geographically as well as content-wise, but were great fun to write.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Refreshing New Regency Writer 2 juillet 2014

Several things made this Regency romance stand out in the crowded ballroom of Regency Romance titles. I was intrigued by the two sisters, one legitimate, one illegitimate, who had been raised together. This went on often in this time period, and I thought the writer dealt with the scenario well, and in true reflection of how families behaved.

Having a blind character who married and was happy was a huge plus. Not every handicapped person was stigmatized in Regency times. Another stand out.

This is not one of the most emotional or overly sentimental books I have read in this genre, but I could not put the book down, and that is always a good sign. For those who are tired of the almost clinical descriptions of sex that have gradually crept under Regency skirts, this book is also refreshing.

This book breaks many of the usual trends in Regency (but no plot spoilers from me). If you are ready to get lost in a good new novel, I highly recommend "The Imposter Debutante." I'll look for any new Regency titles this author writes. Many of my favorites like Balogh and James can make room at the assembly for May Burnett.

This is a very unique story-line in that the Hero is not the usual rakish, all-powerful duke/marquis/earl/viscount/baron that is normally portrayed in Regency Romances. Instead, he is a man who not much has been expected of him, so not much has been asked of him - he is only a second son, after all. This all changed when the outspoken "imposter debutante" entered his life.
Enjoyable and very well written. With this her first venture into Regency Romances, Ms. Burnett has proven that she has great talent for this genre. More, please!

I really loved this novel. it sparkled. I loved how the half sisters had been raised together their whole lives and that they were so close. I wish it had been a bit more descriptive about how they had been trained by Belinda's mother since it didn't seem that they were ever around other people. Amberley and his brother James were so smart and dealt smartly with all the possible things that could come up. There were just so many smart and witty conversations that had me laughing. the reason I gave it a four is the sex scenes started up. it had been perfectly romantic to me until then. I have to say it was not graphic or lengthy. the plot was good and I was so desperately hoping that there would be happy ending. I think it ended too abruptly. I really wanted more. I'm dying to know how Lady Amberley took the news and what happened in London etc.

Belinda, almost blind, newly wed to a physician, and increasing, convinces her older half sister, Charlotte, to accept an invitation to travel London to visit family they had never met. Only, circumstances require Charlotte to go as Belinda, that she might also visit the solicitor handling their father's estate, with whom they had lost contact. They desperately need the money provided in the will for upkeep of the manor and to pay servants and provide for tenants. As one might imagine, all sorts of adventures ensue as the aunt introduces Charlotte into society as Belinda. Charlotte finds unexpected support in Belinda's cousin, James, who endeavors to help her with legal and other issues even after discovering her true identity. Charlotte, who thought her place in life to help Belinda as sister and aunt to Belinda's future children, is surprised by romance, to make for an enjoyable regency read with an original plot. I was not ready for the story to end and look forward to the possibility of a sequel or even a series to come.

So nice to be able to read a well written Regency Romance that isn't cluttered with porn! This is the kind of book I like to read. There was a story line that was fresh, very little of the "misunderstanding" and refusal to communicate that leads the H and h into so much trouble in other books. The H and h were actually honest with each other and didn't do stupid things that gets most of the RR main characters into trouble. They were intelligent and worked out problems with the help of friends and family. The mean mother/aunt didn't cower the H and h into doing her bidding to their detriment. All in all it was a great story. I hope all the books in this series are this well written and fortunately there are lots of them to look forward to reading. Thanks to the author for not giving in to the stupid cliches of the genre. Good job!
