Présentation de l'éditeur

Dear Cici and Father,
I have come to Devon and married a duke. And I'm more tired and hungry than I have ever been in my life. Please let me come home.

Compromised and wedded on the same day, Lady Miranda was fast finding married life not to her taste. A decaying manor and a secretive husband were hardly the stuff of girlish dreams. Yet every time she looked at dark, brooding Marcus Radwell, Duke of Haughleigh, she felt inexplicably compelled—and determined—to make their marriage real!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 3 1/2 stars...good debut from promising new author 29 octobre 2006
Par statengirl - Publié sur
Perfect strangers are forced by circumstance to marry after knowing each other for only a day in this fine debut novel by Christine Merrill. Lady Miranda Grey arrives at the doorstep of Marcus, Duke of Haughleigh, within weeks of his mother's death. It seems that his mother felt guilty about her treatment of Miranda's guardian when they were both younger. As reparation, she had arranged to introduce the impoverished Miranda to Marcus as a potential wife. Marcus, who has been widowed for ten years, has no interest in remarrying. However, stormy weather forces Miranda to stay the night unchaperoned at his country estate, so Marcus marries her to save her reputation. Unfortunately, Marcus can be a bit bossy and temperamental, and he has a run-in with his new wife later that night. He takes off for London, leaving Miranda behind, and the marriage unconsummated. Miranda is left to deal with difficult servants, a long-neglected estate, and Marcus' estranged younger brother, who suspiciously returns as soon as Marcus is away. Marcus better hurry home, for his manipulative brother is up to something, and the unsuspecting Miranda - and her virtue - are far too vulnerable.

I liked this story. I enjoyed the many transformations - the home, Miranda's appearance, Marcus' behavior. The dialogue was well done, the leads were appealing, and the couple's relationship was complex and satisfying. The author also did a nice job of creating some mystery and suspense without it overwhelming the story. I particularly liked the "Rebecca"-like scenes with the brother, where he was charming to Miranda, but there was a persistent sense of foreboding for the reader. There were also some good teary moments. I think the main characters and their history could have used a bit more fleshing out. There were also some printing/editing errors, such as missing words, and Miranda's father was sometimes called Sir Anthony and other times Lord Anthony. Overall, though, this book was a good read with a good storyline. I look forward to more from this promising new author.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Well-done novel 3 octobre 2006
Par Kathy Kaiser - Publié sur
This is a surprising find! There was nothing really unappealing about this novel. The writing is competent, dialogue keeps to the period, characters are well-drawn, and story is compelling. The heroine, Miranda, is my kind of character. She isn't gorgeous, witty, and wealthy. Instead, she's plain, hard-working, and doesn't quite believe in herself or her own merits. I love that. Heroines who are perfect at the beginning of novels really turn me off. The hero, Marcus, is suitably moody and gruff. But, he has a core of honor. He's a fun character. Their love story is satisfying as it unfolds. The fly in the ointment is Marcus's brother. He isn't just a cookie-cutter "bad guy." Merrill gives him some depth and leaves his ending fuzzy. I liked that. I also appreciated the fact that Merrill doesn't use lots of misunderstandings between the hero and heroine to create tension in the plot. That can be so frustrating. Instead, they end up discussing their misunderstandings at various points in the story and resolving them. Whew. That's much more satisfying for the reader. All in all, this is a wonderful new author, one I will continue to look for in the future.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Lovely Debut 20 février 2007
Par Itinerant Bookaholic - Publié sur
In her debut novel, Christine Merrill gives us a thoughtful, warm, and well-written Regency romance. Lady Miranda Grey (who, by the way, would NOT be "Lady" Miranda -- more on that later) is an impoverished gentlewoman who, through machinations of others, ends up compromised and wedded to a man who is stern and hard to please (and not at all happy to be forced into marriage.) Before winning his heart, she needs to win over the servants, reform the estate, and not fall into the snare of his charming younger brother.

I liked the characters and the story here, and will be definitely looking out for more books by this author. I just hope in her future novels, Merrill takes a bit more care with historical errors -- there were a few too many for my taste, even in a first book. I could ignore the costume errors (no chemise under her stays, but yet a petticoat there??) and anachronistic use of self-lighting matches, and even the fact that this duke seems to have extremely little in the way of land or money or know-how for a duke (sort of like writing about an American president with one employee -- it just doesn't work that way). But the title errors were consistent and so very basic that I'm afraid they did annoy me. ("Lady" Miranda's father is Sir Anthony Grey, and therefore either a knight or a baronet, so she *can't* be "Lady" Miranda; to have "Lady" before her first name, her father would need to be an earl, marquis, or duke. Also, when Sir Anthony marries at the end of the book, his wife is also given an incorrect title.)

That said, I did enjoy this novel, quite a bit. The pacing was good, the characters were interesting, and the writing strong. I will be looking for Christine Merrill's next book when it comes out.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 More like 3 and 1/2 30 novembre 2010

I really enjoyed reading this book, but I'm not quite sure how to rate it now that I've reached the end.

The writing was very good; it was mostly smooth and natural. The characters seemed like real people with realistic strengths and weaknesses. I liked how any misunderstandings were cleared up quickly, and the h/h were honest with each other even when it was tough to be so. They both seemed like people I would want to meet in real life.

About 3/4 through, however, there were 2 things I didn't like. One was that Marcus got too sappy. I just find it hard to believe a man would say some of the things he was starting to say, no matter how devoted he had become. The other was the way he handled things the evening of the ball. Yes, he was a bit heavy-handed throughout the entire book - and, yes, he was acting well within societal norms - but I still don't approve of his behavior, and I don't think Miranda should have allowed things to be smoothed over without a little repentance.

Ultimately, I decided to go with 4 stars because it was a great read that kept me very interested the entire way. And it was much better than average for the genre. I would recommend reading it.

First off there are so many reviews done on this book already I wasn't sure if I should leave yet another one. I enjoyed this book. It was a good page turner. Howener I don't give it a 5 because I didn't care for the development of the romance. The Hero wasn't happy with what happens disappears for two weeks and while he is gone he falls in loves with the heroine all the while she is spending time with his brother. The brother who would love to ruin his brother because his first love married his brother instead of him then died in child bed. Also there was those usual hated misunderstandings but are easily overcome. There were too many apologies and she was so submissive to her husband but when it came the the staff she could handle them in a split second. To me it was like she had two split personalities. I know you're probably thinking with these complaint why am I giving it a 4 star and not lower. Simple answer. It was a good story I enjoyed it and despite my complaints found myself turning page after page! That says something about the authors ability to keep the readers going even if they disagree with what is written. Well done!
