Rediscover This Compelling Story

The story of Jesus is the most remarkable ever told. It's an exciting adventure, a tender love story, and a drama full of danger, betrayal, and the ultimate sacrifice. But sometimes the genealogies, the confusing repetition, and the varying order of events in the Gospels can distract readers from this powerful narrative. Or maybe you've heard the story so many times that it has lost its impact.

Here, Dr. William Marty presents the complete narrative of Jesus in an easy-to-read, chronological account. It's a fascinating retelling of everything from his birth to his ascension--as well as what happened in the church after he left. The Jesus Story is perfect if you want to get to know Jesus better or recapture the amazement of hearing his story for the first time.

"[Dr. William Marty] sees Scripture with such heart that you can feel its pulse on every page."
--Beth Moore

*This is a review copy from Bethany House Publishers.

I had had the opportunity to review another book by Dr. Marty a few months ago and this one was just as good as the last. In this book, Dr. Marty takes the Gospels and weaves them together to create a complete, chronological picture of Christ’s life.

*It is NOT a new Bible*

Don’t click off yet! I promise I’m not supporting a new Bible version. The author is merely putting together the four Gospels in an easy-to-read source of Christ’s life and ministry.

Each chapter is based on a certain aspect of Christ’s life: Birth and Childhood, Early Ministry, Great Galilean Ministry, Later Judean and Perean Ministries and Journey to Jerusalem, The Crucifixion, Burial and Resurrection, and the Story of the Church (Book of Acts).

At the beginning of each chapter, Dr. Marty gives the main characters and the setting, then he spends the chapter re-telling what happened according to the four Gospels. At the end of the chapter he gives another short summary.

This is not a big, thick book. It’s probably less than 1/2” thick and the chapters are short. As I said, this is not a new Bible version. The author is merely making it easy to put an account of Christ’s life together in plain English by doing the work for us of cross-referencing the four Gospels.

The book is very well written and well researched. I enjoy this author’s writings and would definitely read more from him.

Bethany House provided a complimentary copy of the featured book in exchange for an honest review.

The Jesus Story: Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English by Dr. William H. Marty condenses the New Testament for readers in a very, easy-to-read book. Its main intent is to outline the life of Christ and the beginnings of the Church. It does a fine job of that. The retelling of events such as healings and miracles is useful, as the Gospels tend to cover the same events changing details dependent upon the author's perspective. This book defines the events in a clear manner.

New believers or someone whom would like a better grip on the chronology of the life of Jesus and the Church's beginnings will find this volume a great help. However, one with a fairly decent grasp of New Testament times may find this book dull. The Jesus Story reads like a set of notes, though in full sentences. I found the language prosaic and somewhat comatose. The other downfall of The Jesus Story, at least in my book, is it is completely devoid of any theological insight. If that was included the book would have kept my interest a lot more.

The Jesus Story will appeal to some who want notes and need a clear-cut grasp of the story. However, I guarantee it will leave seasoned believers who read their Bibles wanting. Let me leave with a positive note. The book is easy to read in a matter of hours. The chapters are well divided and make good sense. Certainly, every reader will gain something from Dr. Marty's The Jesus Story.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Easy to Understand 1 novembre 2013
Par J4Life5 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Dr. Marty provides an easy-to-read version of the story of Jesus from his birth to events after his death, including early missionary trips. Each chapter begins with a list of characters featured in that section of the story, as well as the setting of the story and ends with a summary of events from that chapter.

I love books like this that take the Bible and put it into language that is easily understood. This one is a little different from others that I have read, where others take events and characters from the Bible and fictionalize them, this one takes the Bible and summarizes events in a very easy-to-understand manner. Although there are different translations of the Bible that are easier to read than others, this book offers more of a summary approach.

What I enjoyed the most about this book is that I was already familiar with the topic, but it made me think of it in a different way. Sometimes it is easy to think, "Oh, I already know about this" when reading the Bible and just skim over the section. Because the language is so different in this book than the Bible, it made me stop and think. It is not a line by line paraphrase of the life of Jesus, it is a broad overview that was helpful in seeing the big picture.

This book would be perfect for teenagers to read, especially if they experience frustration with reading the language or phrasing in the Bible. I can see where it could give them enough information to hunger for reading the Bible to get all the details of the story. I also think it would be perfect for new believers to get the big picture to give them a basic familiarity to draw on when they read the Bible. Where the Bible can be intimidating to read and understand sometimes, this is a nice, small book that is easy-to-read. This would also be a nice read-aloud with younger children.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you want to revisit the story of Jesus with fresh eyes, give this book a try!

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Understanding the New Testament Quickly and Easily 3 décembre 2013
Par ErikaRae - Publié sur Amazon.com
The Jesus Story: Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English by William H. Marty is a brief book explaining the New Testament in simple talk.

When I decided to read this book, I expected it to be the gospels explained chronologically, but it was more than that. This book also explains the book of Acts, which shows the furthering of Jesus' resurrection, the gift of the Spirit, and salvation open to Gentiles, not just Jews. When the gospels and Acts finish, there is an extremely brief summary of Revelation, and that's it.

I've studied the gospels and the book of Acts in the last 10 years several times, and this book was a great explanation of all of them. There are details left out, but the point of this book seems to be making it simple. If that is the point of the book, then it's well done.

I can't say if it was necessary or not that the author didn't paraphrase the rest of the books in the New Testament, since I am not extremely familiar with all of the other books. Most of the rest are short and seem to be letters of encouragement or instruction to the newly started churches. The author didn't find it necessary to include them.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding the New Testament quickly and easily. Of course, it's not a Bible, so always keep that in mind. The Bible is God's Word, this isn't.

Overall, I'm thrilled to have refreshed my memory of the New Testament so simply, and enjoyed this book for that reason.

I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review, of which I've given above.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 The Jesus Story: An Easy Way to Read the Gospels in an Afternoon 5 décembre 2013
Par Audrey - Publié sur Amazon.com
For a book which subtitles itself "Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English," The Jesus Story lives up to that promise fairly well. The idea of compiling the Gospels isn't unique--plenty of other people have written similar books--but The Jesus Story makes it easy to read through the four Gospels plus Acts (in an abridged form) in the course of a few hours. That, to keep things simple, is what this book is and what it does.

In exchange for compressing the story, The Jesus Story does have to keep things fairly simple. It's a bonus, making the reading simple as well, but also a minor downfall. The result is not strictly "dumbing things down," but it does leave something lacking in the writing and narrative depth. Dr. Marty does add some good points of explanation in places, but leaves other places ambiguous. Also, he appears to try to translate some concepts, with mixed results. For someone writing for modern readers, I can understand substituting "engaged" for "betrothed." But "tent of holiness" rather than "tabernacle"? It might get the idea across better, but it's hardly less opaque. I'm also not sure that "grateful" best describes Jesus's reaction to his disciples' faith. On the more humorous side, though, Jesus's brothers urge him to "go public!"

My first reaction, after skimming a couple pages, was to notice the style issues. Based on that, I was prepared to give the book 3 stars, but once I sat down to really read it, I found it better than I expected. I'd rate it as okay--not a bad read, but not great writing, and a little flat in places. At the same time, it is a great way to read through the entire New Testament story in a relatively short time. For someone looking for a more comprehensive book closer to the original text, I might also recommend Johnston M. Cheney's The Life of Christ in Stereo, The Four Gospels Combined as One or his later version with Stanley A. Ellison, The Greatest Story. Otherwise, for someone struggling to get through the Gospels or looking for a change of pace, rather like reading a different translation, The Jesus Story seems like a good option.

[My thanks to Bethany House Publishers for sending me a review copy of The Jesus Story, in exchange for my honest opinion of the book.]
