Présentation de l'éditeur

Like one of the movie moguls of old, Michael Eisner is a titan -- feared, powerful, and almost magically successful. After rising through ABC television and Paramount Pictures, he awoke the sleeping giant of Disney and sent it stomping across the entertainment landscape. But since the tragic death of Frank Wells in a helicopter crash in 1994, he has lacked -- for the first time in his career -- a colleague who could temper his personality.

The result, writes Kim Masters, has been a slide into a Nixonian paranoia and isolation. In The Keys to the Kingdom, Masters crafts a gripping account of this larger-than-life story of larger-than-life hubris, combining an insightful analysis of power in Hollywood with a vivid, deeply researched narrative that brings the personalities, the enmities, and the corporate mayhem to life.

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! The book gave such an interesting insight into Disney and the men involved in making it successful once again. The behind the scenes look at the three men and their personalities was awe inspiring and gave a very real understanding of what goes into building a successful company. I find their success much more interesting than the actors who play make believe as a career choice.

I would definitely recommend it as something that is difficult to put down, a real page turner!

Fascinating overview of Disney's early years under Michael Eisner and his reaction to Frank Wells' untimely death, Jeffrey Katzenberg's contentious departure, and Michael Ovitz's disappointing tenure.

"The Keys To The Kingdom" travels a fairly well-traveled road of Disney history. It is well written and dutifully researched. My only real reservation is that it is only occasionally revelatory. That isn't the author's fault, really, it's more a factor of Disney being such a public and publicized company. According to an epilogue to the paperback edition, the author eliminated an anti-Michael Eisner sub-title line from the book's title because it suggested that Eisner had fallen from a pinnacle of success. Truth is that Eisner went out holding a huge bag of blue chips, making him an undeniable winner in the capitalist marketplace. The book does draw a picture of Eisner as a manipulative, controlling, disingenuous, self-serving person, all of which is probably accurate. Nonetheless, in the game of American business, Eisner won in the end. Shakespeare would have known what kind of story to tell about Michael Eisner, I suspect. Anyway, this is a perfectly good book, and I recommend it to all who want to seriously study Disney and the Hollywood animation industry at the birth of CG animation.

I might finish this one day, but it's a little hard to consider right now. I'm still in his early life, and it's all "poor little rich boy with a mean, mean daddy who wouldn't let him have what he wanted at the fancy restaurant (don't worry, mommy made sure he got his shrimp cocktail)." As someone who is not rich and probably never will be, it's extremely difficult to get past my initial negative feelings about the way Eisner's early life as part of a wealthy family is being presented as a terrible challenge for him to overcome. If I can, then I'll finish this book. Until then, one star.

I am interested in Disney history and, by extension, wanted to learn more about Michael Eisner's seemingly miraculous turnaround of the Disney company. First, it's true what they say about not judging a book by its cover. Despite the graphic and the title, this book is not primarily about Eisner as related to Disney. It's more of a lifetime biography of Michael Eisner. That in and of itself is not terrible; it's just not what I expected. Second, and what makes me give this book a one-star rating, is the terribly slanted and biased writing of the author. Every story, every scenario, every person is portrayed in the worst light possible. I understand these are probably not the nicest people in the world (CEOs who have skeletons in their closets, imagine that), but when each and every portrayal of each and every person is made to make everything and everyone look as bad as humanly possible, I get a little suspicious about the author's motives. I opted for a more neutral, middle-of-the-road version of events and read "Prince of the Magic Kingdom". It was primarily about Eisner's time at Disney, so if that's what you're looking for, it's right on the money. It was also well-researched, well-written and non-flamatory.
