Dominique Lepage

Fascinating, brilliant book! 23 août 2012
Par Verlag Drei Hunde Nacht - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Julia Graves' first book - "The Language of Plants" - is a brilliant book that gives a comprehensive insight into the doctrine of signatures. This is a topic which has, to my knowledge, never been written about as in depth as in Ms. Graves' book.

Part I covers the doctrine of signature in theory.
The first chapter is an interesting historical overview of the doctrine of signatures.
The next chapter explains very nicely what exactly is meant by "doctrine of signatures".
Ms. Graves explains how to tune into plants - "plant attunement" and how to differentiate betwenn "chatter" that may clutter your mind and actual information that the plant is "communicating" about itself.
Chapter 4 explores living nature - nature as a vibrant, living thing. Here we learn more about signatures - i. e. that they can be similars or contraries.
Also we explore plants as equals.
Chapter 5 delves into using the doctrine of signatures in practice.
Chapter 6 explains what is NOT a signature, which is a very important aspect to understand in order to use the doctrine of signatures properly.

Part II of the book then covers in great detail the doctrine of signatures in practice.

Ms. Graves covers all aspects of signature: colours, shapes, smells, tastes, touch, understanding as well as elements and environment. She also goes into planetary signatures, organ and physiological signatures, disease signatures and animal signatures.

"The Language of Plants" is an incredibly rich source of holistic herbal information. Not only does one learn alot of interesting things about alot of plants, one learns how to figure out new or different aspects of plants and how to put them to use in the most optimal way for the individual patient.
This is not an "esoteric" book that suggests "shamanic" trips to talk to plants but rather a fresh and detailed look at a straightforward, age-old method of learning about and utilising medicinal plants.
Ms. Graves takes care to point out that one should approach the use of signature with care, utilising good, known resources to double check ones discoveries to insure safe practice.
This book is fascinating, educational for all herbalists - from beginner to advanced - and can also be used as an excellent reference book if one wanted to look up i.e. what a shape or colour might be a signature for or if one wanted to learn about plants that are useful for pain, asthma or lyme disease etc.

I cannot find enough words of praise for this unique book and highly recommend it to any herbalist, holistic practitioner or anyone who is interested in plants, especially medicinal ones.

A quote from the book:

"nature lies before one like a book asking to be read"

Well, if you want to read nature's book, Julia Graves' book would be the best "how to" book to do exactly that.

Thank you Julia for writing this wonderful book!

Thorough, global gathering of information 24 août 2012
Par feathercurls - Publié sur Amazon.com

I am savoring this book. Not only fascinating, but a very thorough gathering of information on what is a large topic. I appreciate that she writes from not only what she's learned from healing traditions around the world, but also her own information gathered through her travels and relationships with the plants. If you want a book to fully explore this topic, this is it, as it goes beyond dry mental concepts and into full experience of the concepts. Easy to read, keeps your attention, and beautifully done in full color. Highly recommend.

insightful and intuitive 26 août 2012

Julia Graves is really able to show a mystical side to plants that most people do not easily recognize. As a teacher, she's also able to make this understanding comprehensible to, and useable by, others. I recommend this book to anyone working with plants in a healing capacity, but also anyone curious about the spiritual dimensions of the physical world.

A most inspiring book - a must-read for plant lovers! 27 octobre 2012
Par ThunderMoon - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I wish to congratulate the author for having written such an inspiring book on the doctrine of signatures in such a fresh, modern way. The doctrine of signatures might sound like medieval and dusty topic, but this book brings it right to the present, to the no-nonsense level. Written lucidly and with great clarity, it covers more than I would have ever thought there could be to this topic. Drawing from traditions world wide, just one of the two parts of the book densely packed with information alone would be well worth its price.

Standing out refreshingly from a lot of recent books that say little with many words, this concise work is profoundly creative and sparks the creativity not only in herbalist and plant lovers, but in anyone who dares to flip its pages! Not asking the reader to labor hard to follow, instead it is empowering: Julia Graves delivers the necessary tools for becoming masters of the language of plants into our hands and says "see how easy it is, and you can do it, too!".

Compared to all the literature on the topic, what is striking about The Language of Plants is that it effortlessly clads the issue in truly holistic thinking and never falls prey to the kind of naturopathic / alternative reductionism so fashionable in our times. Alive and breathing, dripping with practical experience, no part of this book seems dry or mechanical. I know of no other book that does not just list one signature per plant, but hands us the key to read ever single of its characteristics as a signature. While structured in an encyclopedia fashion, The Language of Plants is graced with many anecdotes and thoroughly entertaining. It stretched my notion of this topic to a whole new horizon.

An Exellent and inspiring book 17 février 2013
Par yael cnaan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
An in- depth discussion of the Doctrine of Signatures, It is probably the most comprehensive book on this neglected subject. Julia’s book is both educating and inspiring.

It discusses the theoretical and historical aspects of the subject and then gives detailed explanations to the codes of Nature. It teaches how to attune to them and how to read their meaning thus getting closer to the spirit of each plant. The book encourages and inspires the reader to use his senses, imagination and intuition rather than relying solely on theoretical book-oriented knowledge.

This book gives an ancient yet a fresh point of view of the art of healing with plants
It is highly recommended to both herbalists who look for the art and spirit of their trade, and to all plant lovers seeking to explore the wisdom of plant kingdom.

I treasure this book!
Yael
