Présentation de l'éditeur

A deadly lab disaster shakes the academic world of physics professor Mike Harris. When his ex-fiancee is murdered before his eyes, he becomes the prime suspect. As law enforcement and a shadowy organization pursue him, he must learn the true aim of the experiment that led to the disaster–before he gets captured or killed. The chase pushes Harris to a remote research center, where a powerful corporation prepares to unleash a weapon that could threaten humanity itself. Blending hard science with thrilling fiction, The Last Weapon is a page-turning, thought-provoking read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Robert Ludlum-style technothriller from a new novelist 6 janvier 2014

Imagine that you've been at your career for a long time, you've never quite got the success you wanted, your personal life is in the toilet, and you are beginning to wonder why you ever took up your career in the first place. (Many of us will not have to work very hard to imagine this.)

And then one day you find that your work is so important that a shadowy organization is trying to stop you from doing it, willing to go as far as sabotage and murder. Meanwhile a second shadowy organization is trying to help you do it and protecting you from the other one, willing to go as far as sabotage and murder. Unfortunately, it's not easy to tell which organization is which...

Without giving anything else away, this is what happens to physicist Mike Harris in "The Last Weapon". If you like Indiana Jones or Jason Bourne you should like this. Professor Harris is a more-or-less average guy, so he has a rougher time of it than Indiana Jones or Jason Bourne would have in the same situation.

It is a promising first novel. The author, Matthew McCluskey, is himself a physicist, but scientifically-declined readers need not worry--this is a thriller, not science fiction. The physics is no more complicated or realistic than needed to move the plot along. Dr. McCluskey has clearly studied the genre and marshals his tropes skillfully. The characters and day-to-day events he describes are drawn from life closely enough to ring true, but are original enough not to invite litigation--it requires some skill to pull that off! I look forward to his next novel. However, what the "Last Weapon" turns out to be is such a big idea that it will be pretty hard to top in the next novel. (Hard science fiction fans will be reminded of Larry Niven's "The Borderland of Sol", and that's all the hint I'm going to give you.)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An amazing thriller that just might teach you a thing or two about modern physics 4 janvier 2014

In his first novel, author and physics professor Matt McCluskey delivers a fast paced, exhilarating tale of spies, science, murder and mayhem that harkens back to the days of the Manhattan project. McCluskey’s personal knowledge of the scientific and and ability to describe the complicated physics principals and stories ingeniously woven into the thrilling plot presents them in a fashion sure to entertain and educate any reader.

The story, set in the Northwest United States with excursions around the world, takes place over an 11 day period in Professor Mike Harris’ seemingly mundane life teaching physics and conducting research with a small team at Colton University situated near Montana’s Glacier National Park. The mild mannered professor’s life is turned upside down after a tragic laboratory accident kills most of his team, and he later witnesses and is framed for the murder of his former fiancé and is then relentlessly pursued by law enforcement, a shadowy government organization, and the henchmen of a brilliant but psychotic industrial giant set on using Harris’ research to control the world. Joining forces with colleagues and those seeking to protect him, Harris must uncover the real reason for his research and stop those who might ultimately destroy the world with it.

With exceptional character development, thoughtful and cleverly weaved plots, and use of high tech gadgetry, weapons, and cyber capabilities that would make “Q” from the James Bond series proud, this novel will surely capture the reader’s imagination and keep them glued to the pages. Highly recommended!

Wow!I expected some interesting science but was unprepared for a roller coaster page turner that grabbed me and held my interest to the end. For what I assume is a first novel, the author has done a remarkable job. I was reminded of the great movie North By Northwest as the protagonist travels from one location to another trying to make sense out of his predicament. Very thought provoking too: is there an ultimate weapon? Do we risk the end of everything in our quest to protect ourselves.

All in all a fantastic read. I look forward to the movie.

McCluskey has a good way to bring science, mystery, romance, and politics all together in a wild scary manner. I had a little bit of trouble getting involved in the plot, but suddenly I found myself hooked. Great reading and his style will draw you in as well. Enjoy!
