Présentation de l'éditeur

Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease that can affect any system and organ in the body. For the 1.4 million people in the United States who have lupus, an overactive immune system senses that different parts of the body do not belong, and it attacks these parts. The immune system may strike the cells that line the joints or tendons, for example, causing pain and swelling. An incredibly complex disease, lupus must be properly treated for the optimal health and well-being of the person who has it.

The Lupus Encyclopedia is an authoritative compendium that provides detailed explanations of every body system potentially affected by the disease, along with practical advice about coping. People with lupus, their loved ones, caregivers, and medical professionals—all will find here an invaluable resource. Illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and tables, The Lupus Encyclopedia explains symptoms, diagnostic methods, medications and their potential side effects, and when to seek medical attention. Dr. Donald Thomas provides information for women who wish to become pregnant and advises readers about working with a disability, complementary and alternative medicine, infections, cancer, and a host of other topics.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A must-read for the Lupus community 15 août 2014
Par Julie D. Lillis - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. At this point I could probably write one of my own. But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean.

But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information.

However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important anyway. The advice sections, which are extensive beyond belief, do not require any knowledge of science and are very clearly written. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not.

I hope he realizes that by writing this volume, he will empower the Lupus community (which is huge). Armed with an extraordinary amount of his medical advice--some of it granular and some, not--patients can go to their physicians to ask for critical lab tests and game changing medications. Many Lupus patients are not fortunate enough to have access to quality medical care, for one reason or another. This book may further propel them to be their own medical advocates, and substantially improve their health. It is a must-read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A MUST HAVE "Bible" for Anyone with Lupus or Auto-Immune Disease!!! 13 juillet 2014
Par Robyn Alt - Publié sur Amazon.com
Finally - a KNOWLEDGABLE, FACT filled book - in ordinary, everyday language !!
For anyone & everyone that may have an Auto-Immune Disease or Lupus (or knows someone that does) .
Dr. Donald Thomas explains things, so either a patient, family member, or any Medical Professional can learn & understand!!
THANK YOU Dr. T & God Bless!!! You are indeed a special, caring, knowledgable Doctor!!
Wish my 'Specialist' Doctor would read this... and learn... and pass it on to his patients!!
While the reader must engage in some 'bouncing around' the many chapters - all you need to do, is follow Dr. T's recommended 'usage' directions!
I would strongly advise anyone with this complicated disease, to buy this "Bible", to find your way through!!!!!
I have 'learned' more with this book - than over 5 years of lab tests & dozens of doctors visits!!

Lupus Book Review
By Lupus Adventurer

The Lupus Encyclopedia: A Comprehensive Guide for Patients and Families (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) by Donald E. Thomas, Jr., M.D., FACP, FACR, was recently released. Within the astounding 43 chapters is an in-depth and exhaustive discussion of the many facets of lupus. This book is for lupus patients, but is not a quick read, but between two covers holds a broad library of balanced lupus topics that are worthy of investing some time and study.

There is so much in this book, but where should you start? Begin in the Preface, where Dr. Thomas sets forth seven specific steps a lupus patient may use right away to get the greatest benefits from his book:

1. Go to the 3 page Lupus Secrets Checklist in Chapter 44
2. Read the listed specific chapters Dr. Thomas recommends reading next
3. Get a copy of your medical records, notes, labs, x-rays, etc.
4. Skim interesting chapters to find and go back to spend more time on ones that apply most to you
5. Consult the Patient Resources at the end of the book
6. Visit Dr. Thomas' Facebook page and follow him on Twitter for current lupus news
7. Consider sending an email to Dr. Thomas with suggestions for future editions

After ferreting out reliable lupus information for more than twenty years since receiving a diagnosis in the early 1990s, it really seemed there were few sources of fresh information about Lupus, without going to books and references written for the medical community. This book provides an understandable reference resource appropriate for patients. Happily, there is great depth and much to learn from reading and referring to this important book!

Dr. Thomas clearly demonstrates his broad understanding of Lupus, and this book should stand the test of time as one of the great books about this complex autoimmune disease. The first printing of this exhaustive patient reference initially sold out in both hard and soft cover edition at a reduced price through Amazon.com but a few more copies are now available, and more are on the way. It is also sold at BarnesandNoble.com in both cover styles and as a Nook e-book at the lowest price online so far. If other sources are out of stock and you do not mind paying full list price, purchase it direct from the publisher's website at John Hopkin's University Press.

I heartily recommend The Lupus Encyclopedia, and urge you to check it out, too.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 AWESOME, AWESOME BOOK 9 juillet 2014

AWESOME, AWESOME BOOK!!! My husband and I each have our own bookmarks init as he reads anything that I put in front of him that has to do with my illnesses, medicines and treatments...I am straddling @ 35 meds/day and 10 auto-immune disorders. I also just ordered this book today for my Parents. EVERYONE with Lupus or any of the other many associated auto immune diseases / disorders should have to read and use as a reference. I brought into my Rheumatologist's when I went in for my Rituxan treatment. They LOVED it and were going to order 1 or 2 to have onsite for patients to use / read while they where there getting any of their numerous treatments. Also, this book is VERY inexpensive for being a 900 page book...unbelievable! I pre-ordered mine in February 2014 and finally received in June 2014...WELL WORTH THE WAIT!!!!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 874 pages of very important info. Only Lupus book you'll need 29 septembre 2014

When I was first diagnosed with Systemic Lupus, I ran out and bought every book I could find, to try to help me deal with this strange disease. Back then, most of them were written by people who had Lupus and they just told of their experience with it. Since Lupus does different things to different people, those books did not actually help me. I wanted to understand Lupus and how it pertained to me. I have had diagnosed Lupus for 24 years and it has wrecked havoc on my body. If I had understood some of the things that you can find in this book, I would have been better off.
This book teaches many things I've learned the hard way and also some additional information. Examples as follows:
Never have a live vaccine shot. It will activate the Lupus.
The tests you need to have done and what they mean.
Some people have a blood clotting problem with Lupus (I did).
Some people have to avoid the sun. The sun can activate the Lupus. If so, take vitamin D.
Problems that can happen with Lymph Nodes.
herbal supplements that can cause flares.
Other diseases that you often have, in addition to Lupus.
Types of medications that help and those that hurt.
Pregnancy and Infertility.
I could never start to tell all the things this book covers. It has 874 pages.
I dearly wish I had this book when I first started with Lupus. Then I developed Ankylosing Spondylitis and Fibromyalgia. The book tells about those (and many more) too.
You won't need any other book.
