Présentation de l'éditeur

In the 22nd Century, a group of misfits and mavericks are preparing to leave behind everything they have known. Advanced technology has created a one-way time portal to Earth’s Pliocene Era – six million years ago. Those seeking a better life are drawn to the promise of a simple utopia, far from the civilised Galactic Mileu. But no one could have predicted the dangers on the other side.

For the group will enter the battleground of two warring alien races, exiled from a distant planet. And these races not only have potent mind powers, but seek to exploit and enslave humans for their own needs. The travellers are about to discover that their unspoilt paradise is far from Eden.

Winner of the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel.

‘Julian May has woven a many-coloured tapestry of exotic adventure’ Roger Zelazny, ‘I was captivated by its glamorous, sinister movement through the misty forests of Earth’s true past’ Fritz Leiber

A well written fantasy novel which is impossible to put down! Misfits from the future go through a time portal to escape a world they can't adapt to and find that prehistoric Europe is inhabited by beings from another planet who are nonetheless fairly human in their way of life. Some of the misfits revel in this new situation, others abhor it...... It is so rare to find a novel in this genre which uses a wide range of vocabulary and assumes that the readers are intellingent. I finished this book and immediately bought the next one in the series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Tanu, Firvulag & Humans Disputing the Pliocene! 22 octobre 2006
Par Maximiliano F Yofre - Publié sur Amazon.com
Ms. May (b. 1931) started her writer career in the early `50s writing two sci-fi short stories. Immediately she changed to writing scientific articles, YA and children literature.

In 1981 she made a dramatic return to sci-fi genre with this book, starting the Pliocene Exile Saga, earning the Locus Award.

The author greatly profit from her scientific background. The descriptions of Pliocene fauna, flora and geography are minutely accurate. Whatever technical subject is used into the story is consistently and believably described: mining, sailing, astronomical orientation, weapon making or hunting.

Does this make the novel boring? By no means! Julian is a wonderful writer and introduces all this stuff with a colorful prose giving substance and deepness to the story.

As to start the tale with sure hand, Ms. May set up every character depicting its entourage, rising, motivations, draw-backs and virtues. Then, with all this neatly tied, she launches the whole bunch into a non-stop adventure in the Pliocene.

You'll be really delighted by this mixture of strange landscape & fauna with alien dimorphic species: Tanu & Firvulag. You'll find people with extraordinary meta-functions active or latent, allying or fending with aliens & kin.

The narration is very straightforward, interesting and never let you down.

In this first volume of the quartet the author close the story very neatly but at the same time leaves enough loose threads as to keep you wanting for more.

Fortunately there IS more to come!

Julian May's scifi novels are among my favorites. Very heady stuff, with a wealth of characters, and rich in detail. It makes you want to live in her world. I credit her with getting me interested in reading again. I've bought the same books several times, as I have stored older copies, and it just becomes easier to buy the books, rather than tear the house apart, trying to find them. I am about to reread her Galactic Milieu series for the 3rd time.

This is what I like to call PsyFi. It's very cerebral, and so enjoyable.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The beginning of a (wonderful) Long Strange Trip.... 5 février 2013
Par applewood - Publié sur Amazon.com
Julian May was an experienced non-fiction (science and history) writer before setting out in the late 70's to record what happened in the Pliocene age (6 million years ago), when humans of the near future (2100) began going back through a one way portal in present day France. The story she tells is both fantastic and realistic, fast paced and complex and... long! This volume is just the first of 8 books in the two series that covers this history connecting the past, present and future ("The Sage of Pliocene Exile" and "The Galactic Milieu Series").

I have heard the two series can be read independently but figured why not begin at the beginning. I first read these books fifteen years ago when convalescing from an accident, and wondered what they would be like to revisit now without the somewhat altered mindset I had then. After finishing this Vol 1. I can say I really like the way May writes, and think it's better than some of my other favorite Sci-fi authors (Herbert, Heinlein and Le Guin), in fact she comes across as something of a synthesis of these very different writers, and is head and shoulders above the formulaic products of popular history/fantasy writers like George Martin, Dan Brown or Caleb Carr.

The world May creates is complex both psychologically and physically, combining elaborate and plausible details based in science (botany, zoology, geology, physics) and para-science (psychic abilities of telekinesis, farscensing, telepathy, transvection). It almost seems it could all be real, but at the same time she weaves a web of terms and descriptions that can overwhelm (if you actually worried what they mean), but also add to the richness of it all. Her writing style is also distinctly feminine, a nice balance of nerdy and hip, intellectual and expansive, and (somewhat unusual for the genre) free of overly pedantic metaphoric agendas.

This single novel is satisfying on it's own, and when it ends you can see if you want to continue on through the rest of the series. I can't remember all the details from my first encounter, but I do know they get better, weirder and wilder!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A mythology-based fantasy with true originality 30 mars 2014

A great escape and a bit of a mental stretch too (obscure vocabulary on nearly every page!) which science fiction should be. I love the landscape she creates and the epic battle between human archetypes and mythical gods is clever. After a few reads of the whole combined series (8 books?) I think of both the Pliocene Exile and May's vision of 22nd century Earth, as places I've visited and want to keep revisiting. I only wish she had written more.

The Exiles series stands out as an epic fantasy / sci fi trilogy, even twenty years the Many Coloured Land of 6 million years before. An absolutely mesmerising sci-fi interpretation of myths and faerie tales, Julian May hints of a near future world and fully explores pre-historic times introducing exotic creatures, elves, giants, ogres, monsters and people with superb story telling..
