What is particularly striking about the book is how difficult, time consuming and controversial were some developments and discoveries that we now take for granted. This is true not only for such things as the concept of zero or the adoption of Arabic numerals, but other more mundane matters as well. The concept of odd and even numbers, for example, always struck me as so obvious that it was always with us. Not so. Ouaknin takes us step by step through the histories and discoveries relevant to numerals and numbers that allow for a deeper appreciation of what, to us, seems like everyday knowledge.
Ouaknin is also a rabbi and infuses much of his discussion with the metaphysical aspects of numbers. The concepts of special numbers and magic squares are presented to the reader not only from a strictly mathematical perspective but also from a philosophical one allowing us to see the importance of numerical discoveries to the development of philosophy and religious thought.
One important aspect of THE MYSTERY OF NUMBERS that is not apparent without actually seeing the book is how beautiful it is. The book contains an enormous amount of graphics and illustrations that make it particularly appealing though, I am sure, also a printer's nightmare. As the writing is quite accessible for the subject matter, I recommend this book to anyone with a passing interest in the field.
I know the rote of western numerology (at least the subject is available to me) via my teacher's course work but I wanted to get more into the subject and this book is the goldmine for anyone seriously interested in Numerology and what is behind the simple rote of getting this and that number.
My studies into Divinity got me focusing on Numerology, after I seriously studied Pythagoras and his teaching. I am first and foremost a student and practitioner of Agni Yoga, but now I am getting to be serious about this number's business....
