Présentation de l'éditeur

Through years of daily, dedicated, and thorough research, Jody Ortiz has worked tirelessly to bring truth to the spin created by the local media on a high profile case in Oklahoma. Kelsey Smith Briggs was raped and murdered in 2005, and Kelsey's mom, Raye Dawn Smith was then wrongfully convicted of enabling child abuse with a 27-year sentence with no chance of parole after facing a jury that had been tainted by biased members of the media.

Kelsey's stepfather, Mike Porter, though charged with sexual assault and murder, was given a 30-year plea for enabling child abuse at the request of Kelsey's paternal family, the Briggs.

In advocating against what Jody Ortiz believed was an injustice, Ortiz has in turn, suffered from mental and verbal abuse, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, stalking, hacking into her personal e-mails, attempts to destroy her business, threats of violence, false accusations, bullet holes in her truck, her home burglarized, and the harassment of her friends. All of this in an attempt to quiet her voice of truth and her passion for speaking what she fervently believes is a personal vendetta to destroy justice and sway public opinion.

As told by Ortiz in her own words, you will feel the crippling fear that overtook this private citizen and see exactly why we often aren't presented with the full picture of an event as it unfolds. In the end you'll ask yourself, would I have the courage to do this for what once was a total stranger? We believe you will. And you will see that ultimately, truth does set you free.

This book includes legal documentation and process information that covers the case from the time of the child's alleged rape and murder through the ongoing appeal for the child's mother.

The case has been studied in various law classes and this book includes testimony, investigative interviews, and a motion for a new trial. It also discusses the media's involvement in a high-profile case. Therefore, it is an ideal case to review and discuss in classes that pertain to both law and media responsibility

Biographie de l'auteur

Jody Ortiz is a wife and mother. She is currently working as a freelance and ghost writer. In her spare time, she has volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, delivered meals for Meals on Wheels, and volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul where she delivered food to those in need and developed a database to keep track of donations. Jody's recent exposure to wrongful convictions has led to her position on the board of Raye of Hope, an Oklahoma based organization that gives a voice to those who claim to be wrongfully convicted. Jody is also on the Board of Directors for Survivors in Action, a nationwide non-profit advocacy group that supports victims of crimes including domestic violence, identity theft, elder abuse, cyberstalking, stalking, child abuse, rape, and sexual assault. Although the overwhelming amount of hate Jody has received on a daily basis from her attackers paralyzed her for over two years, through encouragement from her family, her strong faith, and loving supporters and friends, Jody learned to face her fear and her harassers head on and reclaim her life through telling her story of survival to the world.

Jody has written a book that goes above and beyond the normal True Crime books. This book will provide an open minded reader with more than enough proof that Raye Dawn was falsely accused, and convicted of a crime she did not commit.

This was an amazing book. I could NOT put it down and read half of the book in only the first few hours. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone and everyone but especially to those who take a special interest in wrongful convictions. I am going to read "Bashboard Bullies" Next and then cannot wait for "Bullied Into Prison" to come out.

This book does an excellent job of documenting the shortcomings and injustice that exists in Oklahoma's legal system. I don't know if the unjust trial of Raye Dawn Smith by the Oklahoma legal system is typical of our legal system in our nation, but if it is, then the viewpoint that we are a nation ruled by just laws is a sham.

The book points out how one's person hatred for another could result in the person who is the object of the hatred, Raye Dawn Smith, being imprisoned for twenty-seven years for a crime that she did not commit. This bully was able to bully a Distrit Attorney and to target others for persecution for supporting Raye Dawn Smith.

I admire Jody Ortiz for overcoming the cyberbullying aimed at her and to have the courage to document her experience in this book.

Cyberbullying is broadly defined as willful and repeated harm inflicted through an electronic medium, such as a personal computer or cellular phone. Insidiously, malevolence is directed at wreaking havoc on a victim's emotional well being, personal life and their livelihood all while remaining seemingly anonymous.

Jody Ortiz is a writer who has endured such an attack and was driven out of business as a result of telling a story a powerful Cyberbully didn't appreciate. Jody's personal story will shock you and I hope move you into action to lobby for cyberstalking and cyberbullying legislation in your state.

Right now we do not have adequate cyberstalking and cyberbullying laws in any of our states and we need the judicial system react immediately.

Thank you Jody.

Having followed this story for quite some time, I am pleased to see it documented truthfully and accurately by Jody Ortiz. Mrs. Ortiz has been carefully following the wrongful conviction of Raye Dawn Smith for a very long time, having thoroughly compiled the facts as they relate to this case. It is unfortunate that she has had to endure cyberbullying and cyberstalking simply for fighting for the truth. However, in bringing this to light, we can be encouraged that laws will be changed so that she and others can be protected in what should be a country of free and safe expression.
Excellent book. Well written. Your dedication to see that justice is served is a gift to all in this country where our rights and freedoms must be protected. Thank you Jody for bringing light to the truth of injustice in this case.
