Présentation de l'éditeur

Over two hundred years ago, Thomas Jefferson began to carve away at the King James Bible with a razor—an action considered by some then and today to be blasphemous—out of a desire to produce a linear narrative of the life of Jesus of Nazareth free of claims of divinity or mentions of miraculous events. The work he produced, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, has since come to be known as The Jefferson Bible.

The words and story of Jesus of Nazareth as compiled by Thomas Jefferson are now available in modern English for the first time. Dan Marshall has pored over the Open English Bible translation to bring you those verses selected by Jefferson himself. The OEB translation was released in 2010 by the Open English Bible Project (www.OpenEnglishBible.org). Written at a high school reading level, it was designed with usability, readability, and accuracy in mind. Thanks to these modern efforts, you can understand the Gospel passages culled by Thomas Jefferson in a way never before possible. Learn the story of Jesus as viewed by one of America's most well-known Founding Fathers.

Immediately following The New Jefferson Bible, Dan Marshall presents his vision of the teachings and life story of the person known as Jesus, written in paragraphs instead of verses. The Marshall edit is half the length of Jefferson's book. In holding with the vision of rejecting the supernatural, the teachings of Jesus are offered free of mentions of eternal life, threats of punishment, and references to a deity. Do the moral lessons of Jesus stand when separated from the influence of religious authority? Readers must decide for themselves.

Get The New Jefferson Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth in Modern English today. It's the most famous story you've yet to read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Finally! A modern version of The Thomas Jefferson Bible 5 juillet 2013

Don't be mislead by a couple of other books on the Kindle store that claim they are a "21st century version of the Thomas Jefferson Bible" they are just compilations of existing texts.

THIS book is the first, and only one that I am aware of, truly modern english version of the Thomas Jefferson Bible. What an excellent idea to update the Jefferson Bible with modern text.

Here you get the whole story of Jesus. The Christian message without all of the "mystic magic" that is so important to the Pre-Christian and Christian corporation-complex. It is an easy and short read compared to any of the official bibles in circulation. I would recommend this bible for any atheist to read. After all, what Jesus taught and did are what guide my life. Thomas Jefferson got it right!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A very good study guide 1 janvier 2015

This is not intended to replace the Bible. It is merely a compilation of the words of Jesus in time sequence. It is translated into modern English which helps comprehension. It certainly helped me understand the lessons of Jesus much better. And, it increases my admiration of Jefferson and his quest to understand Jesus and his time on earth. Treat this as a study guide rather than anything else.

Dan Marshall should be commended for trying to bring Jefferson's selections into the 21st century. However, it needs to be noted that the translation used here (The Open English Bible) isn't (in my opinion) the greatest one out there. It's used here because of it's open license. Readers should also be careful not to mistake "modern English" with "contemporary English" either. A more interesting take on Jefferson's work might look like a Jefferson "The Message" or "The Voice" or perhaps even a "New Living Translation." However, they are copyrighted works so this was an impossibility for Marshall.

In the dedication Marshall notes that "Though this is not a faithful letter-by-letter reproduction, much effort was made to accurately portray the intent of his selections." and in the introduction to his own Jefferson-style edit of the scriptures (reflecting on the Jefferson translation) he notes that "I am neither a scholar nor a theologian. That said, every effort was made to produce a scholar-level recreation of Jefferson's original volume The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. Beyond using the 19th century source to ensure the meaning is as close as possible to the original intent."

This is clearly a labor of love for Marshall, who by his own admission is not technically qualified for such an undertaking. While that fact may prove troublesome for some readers it shouldn't necessarily hold them back from making this purchase (though you may want the Smithsonian edition by your side, just in case).

I had never heard of this book until this spring. It is a very nice condensation of the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. But, it isn't a Bible. However, it is a very good place to begin your exploration for a new Christian and for the established Christian to re-examine the roots of his or her faith. The sub-title is very important, it sets the stage for the contents. Don't look for more than the sub-title promises.
