Présentation de l'éditeur

A teenaged boy plays football in a suburban park. His name is Raheem Sterling. The call is made: "Get down here quick. This is something special".

Another boy is 8, going on 28. His name is Jack Wilshere. The referee, an Arsenal scout, spirits him away from Luton Town.

A young goalkeeper struggles on loan at Cheltenham Town in League Two. His name is Jack Butland. Within months he will be playing for England.

Welcome to football's hidden tribe. Scouts are everywhere yet nowhere, faceless and nameless, despite making the informed decisions worth millions. Award-winning sportswriter Michael Calvin opens up their hidden world, examining their disconnected lifestyles, petty betrayals and unconsidered professionalism of men who spend long, lonely hours on the road.

Brilliant at first 30 juillet 2014

Brilliant at first, with a lot of true 'insider info'. Some of the early chapters, especially the ones on Brentford, are fascinating. But there's no theme here and it runs out of steam by the final quarter of the book, when the author basically starts transcribing some Arsenal coach's memories. That would be interesting in a stand-alone article but here it strays really far from a book about the unknown, unsung role of the scout. If this book was edited more strongly and the author had a viewpoint beyond "scouts are good people" then it would be 4 or 5 stars. If you're a serious fan I still recommend it, though.

While the content is good, the author's writing style gets in the way of his subject matter. Calvin shifts between people or settings quickly, leaving the read wondering who or what he is talking about. While a fascinating topic, a lack of clarity hurts the quality of this book

How Interesting 5 janvier 2014

If you happen to go to the Amazon.co.uk site you'll see that this book currently has 44 reviews, 38 of which are 5 stars and, at worse, two are 3 stars. So I figured I should start to address the balance a little a Amazon.com
I found the book a great read possibly because I already appreciated the valuable contribution that the subject matter gives to football. They may be a dying breed and are poorly compensated for their great work but, if you read this book, you’ll see that the clever clubs still value their role despite having armies of analysts and statisticians.
It’s a real insight and a fascinating read and I would recommend that any young player hoping to make a career out of football should read and re-read a copy, if nothing else for a reality check.
I live in Australia where we could really do with these astute connoisseurs covertly assessing our young players. Currently that's not the way its done and boy does it show.

This book is so very hard to read given the sentence construction is horrid. Seriously, there are perhaps, on average, at least, three, or four comas per sentence. This dude cannot be a writer by trade.
