Revue de presse

Wilson's 'part technical, part tactical, part cultural reassessment' is as fascinating a study as FFT has ever seen on the psyche and evolution of the keeper. From tales of tragedy to examining the recent rise of American stoppers, you'll never view No.1 in the same way again --FourFourTwo

The Outsider is a terrific history of its subject. It wears its knowledgeable perspective lightly and deftly works its vast research into the text without battering you over the head with it. Wilson can always be relied upon to come up with something a little bit different and a little bit special, and this has plenty of both --When Saturday Comes

Présentation de l'éditeur

First ever cultural history of the goalkeeper, the 'loner' between the posts. 'Aloof, solitary, impassive, the crack goalie is followed in the streets by entranced small boys. He vies with the matador and the flying aces, an object of thrilled adulation. He is the lone eagle, the man of mystery, the last defender.' Nabokov (quoted here), Camus, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, James Joyce, even Julian Barnes . . .it's safe to say the goalkeeper hasn't always been a team player. In THE OUTSIDER, Jonathan Wilson traces the sometimes dangerous intellectual and literary preoccupations of the keeper, and looks at how the position has secured a certain existential cool, as well as taking a deep tactical and technical look at the history of goalkeeping. Jonathan Wilson is the football correspondent for the FINANCIAL TIMES as well as writing for the SUNDAY TELEGRAPH and GUARDIAN. There has been the odd, minor work on goalkeeping in the past, but nothing like this in scope or depth.

The book is quite good if you look for a light read full of anecdotes - but if you are serious about technical aspects of Goalkeeping and how/why it evolved the way it did - it will leave you wanting for more. Jonathan Wilson's 'Inverting the Pyramid' was a lot more balanced book imho, it also contained many entertaining stories, but the adjoining diagrams and movements could have kept you interested if you were inclined to be more, ahem, analytical about the game.

However, the early days of goalkeeping (mostly before Yashin era) are quite well covered and can be looked as good material that is not so easily found.

An interesting history that includes little known facts about the ancestors of today's goalkeepers, many of whom were very colorful. As a former goalkeeper, 1948-1958 and currently a goalkeeper coach, I was surprised that most professional football teams did not employ goalkeeper coaches until about the 1970's and coming way off the line was frowned upon until more recently.

The Outsider gives a excellent picture of many of the goalkeeping greats, their ups and downs and the effect of politics on their careers. An informative fun read. The Outsider: A History of the Goalkeeper

Jonathan WIlson is one of football's premier writers. His keen eye for detail and elegant writing style illuminates topics that would otherwise not appeal. Even the casual football fan would find his work accessible and engaging. The Outsider is no different and, as the title says, describes nicely the history of football's most unique and misunderstood positions.

I love that it was good at showcasing some of the greats in history, shows you the evolution of the position. I can certainly relate to many of his points. It helped me understand the different types of goalkeepers and their role in a system. My son is a keeper and it helped me understand his position much better. Brilliant work.

Enjoyable, detailed, interesting - but it felt a little forced, as if Mr. Wilson put together a list of goalkeepers, categorized them, and then assembled some anecdotes about each. He's always a good read, but I've liked some of his other work better.
