Présentation de l'éditeur

Once the Oversight, the secret society that polices the lines between the mundane and the magic, counted hundreds of brave souls among its members. Now their number can be tallied on a single hand.

When a drunkard brings a screaming girl to the Oversight's London headquarters, it seems their hopes for a new recruit will be fulfilled - but the girl is a trap, her appearance a puzzle the five remaining guardians must solve or lose each other, and their society, for good.

As the borders between the natural and the supernatural begin to break down, brutal murders erupt across the city, the Oversight are torn viciously apart and their enemies close in for the final blow.

This dark Dickensian fantasy spins a tale of witch-hunters, magicians, mirror-walkers and the unlikeliest of heroes drawn from the depths of British folklore. Meet the Oversight, and remember: when they fall, so do we all.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wow-- totally under the radar YA fantasy 10 octobre 2014

The Short & Sweet of It:

This one is the surprise hit of the year for me-- totally #UnderTheRadar, guys. The Oversight is an incredible fantasy set in an alternate 19th c. England. It sports a large cast of colorful characters and I came to care for each and every one of them. Told in multiple 3rd person POV, the book was never overreaching, drew me in and kept me guessing with it's myriad of plot twists and turns. There is a subtle romance written in but it's there and promises to be of the epic variety before all is said and done. But the star of the show is the über descriptive world building & flawless writing. Charlie Fletcher is a film and television screenwriter and it shows-- I see this one getting snapped up for the big screen-- so read it now and be ahead of the curve. This is the start of one heck of a series.

I cannot imagine how I can be the first person to review this marvelous new fantasy. There should be a thousand reviews, all saying this book is an exciting opening to a new trilogy.

The Oversight is an organization in Victorian England (though of much, much older origins) that is down to few members. It must survive to protect the world from the supranaturals, and to protect the supranaturals from the world, so to speak. They are keepers of the Lore and the Law, making sure that everything keeps to its proper level.

A young girl with bits of her memory missing comes into their lives and the story unfolds from there. What I loved in particular were the excellent descriptions of each character (good and bad), the amount of engagement that the author drew from me, and how much I was vested in the outcome.

The story was exciting, colorful, full of the kind of clever British writing that many of us love. If the trilogy pans out, I will keep it on my shelves next to Gaiman, Mieville, and Harkaway. High praise, indeed!

Charlie fletcher is a screen writer and the screen writer is a dramatist. unfortunately he has not mastered the skill of a novelist. The novelist has to use the power of description to convey his meaning in print. He does not have the benefit of the background of the visual background of the cinema.
So the writer has developed phrases like THEV CITIZEN or THE SMITH and so the actual description of these people do not emerge on the page. The writer then goes into dialogue because Mr. Fletcher is comfortable with dialogue.Later on its aG LINTwhich FLETCHER explains is touching stone ,seeing the pasttas if its real.Fletcher wants to convey
Then the term the Oversight is used which the Frenchies called the Paladin . THEN later THEWIPERS emerge which seem to be seeing something out of a HarryPotter novel The last chapter is excellent so MR.FLETCHER please keep writing that way.l

There is a secret society that patrols the border between the known and unknown. On one side you have the normals and on the other you have the magical people. The society is called the Oversight. There was once hundreds of them but now there are 5.

When Lucy is brought to the Oversight headquarters, she was bound and gagged and had no clue who they were or what they wanted from her. When these people start saying things that they shouldn't know, Lucy realises there's more at play here than what she thought! See Lucy is different, when she touches things she gets visions. Everyone told her she was crazy and she started believing them until Sarah, the head of the Oversight, told her what she was. She is a Glint like Sara.

The second Lucy arrives it sets off a sequence of events that may cause the end of the society for good. Will the 5 be able to stop the things in the shadows from ending them? Who is this girl and why was she brought there?

Well this was such a pleasant surprise! When I was approached to review this it was the cover that caught my eye but it was the blurb that made me say yes.

This started out slow but the authors writing style kept me hooked. Rich in detail and set in Victorian London, I was captivated from the very start.

The whole lore of the Oversight was absolutely fascinating. They are a group of 5 that guard the divide between our world and the world of magic. Once there is always 5 in the group then the world is safe. We have Sarah, Cook, Mr Sharp, Hodge and The Smith. All very different but all intriguing and likable characters.

From the Oversight themselves to the creepy things in the shadows, we see a world full of magic and intrigue. It is a book that unwinds its secret slowly and should be savoured. From the dark and dangerous streets of London to the countryside with a travelling circus, The Oversight pulls you in and doesn't let go. The authors writing style was exquisite and mesmerizing, he doesn't just tell the story, he makes you apart of it and weaves it around you. With twist after twist, fascinating characters and its dark atmosphere The Oversight is a must read.
