The Mother of All Penguin Books 6 juin 2007

Excellent book, gives the reader a ultimate overview of our flightless friends that live in the Antartic, SubAnartic, Cold Temerate and even up to parts of Southern Africa, South America and Australia. Good luck finding the book though, I had to obtain a copy all the way from Australia just to add this to my Oxford Bird Families of the World Series.
A comprehensive resource to the penguins 30 avril 2014

Another in the comprehensive Oxford University Press Bird Families of the World series and following the same mold as the other titles in this series it is a very thorough and detailed work.

The first part of the book is a broad overview of the family including origins and evolution, breeding biology, population, behavior, foraging ecology, physiology and conversation. This section is liberally scattered with line drawings, charts, photographs and even sonograms to further explain the text.

The second part is the species accounts. Each species is covered by a basic description then much more detail is given over to adult, immature and chick plumages. Subspecies are discussed along with measurements and weights. Range and status is covered at length with large range maps. Field characteristics cover jizz and though usually fairly basic in their vocalizations this is covered in some depth. Habitat and general habits covers habitat, food & feeding behavior which delves further by going into foraging range, diving behavior, swimming speeds and diet, very comprehensive! Displays and breeding behavior also get the same treatment as does breeding and life cycle possibly even more so.

The center of the book has eight very well illustrated plates by Jeff Davies, whose other work on Australian Shorebirds is also excellent. Adults, immatures and chicks are depicted where necessary on habitat backgrounds giving them a nice feel.

Overall this is an incredibly extensive and well researched book covering all aspects of penguin life and together with excellent illustrations this makes for a valuable addition to any ornithological library.

This is a very comprehensive writeup of the biology of penguins. The most current (to mid 2000's) data are presented clearly and concisely, and makes for an excellent chapter-by-chapter read. Too bad it's out-of-print. Some innovative publisher should convert it to an E-book.
