Revue de presse

“I found this most interesting book and have had such fun reading it and deciding which recipes I am going to try first…Illustrated with great food shots and photographs from the author’s family albums. An excellent addition to my burgeoning cookbook collection.” ~BeattiesCookbookblog.blogspot.com

Présentation de l'éditeur

A collection of family recipes from the Caribbean. Jonathan Phang grew up in a hectic Chinese-Caribbean household in London that was always full of the wonderful, rich smells of the next meal. The Pepperpot Club is a stunning collection of Caribbean recipes, alongside which Jonathan recounts a childhood defined by tales from the homeland, loud music, laughter, and his mother’s aromatic cooking. Delicious foods include Meatball and Glass Noodle Soup, Chinese Ribs, Jerk Chicken, Coconut Cream Pie, and a kicker of a Rum Punch.

Ok, I glanced through this treasure in a Tommy Bahama store on El Paseo in Palm Desert, CA.
Had to have it! Always check to see if my fav store in the entire world carries it and YES! And as usual for much much less!

Great cookbook and story!
Check out and "look through".
A good cookbook and an affectionate memoir 17 mars 2015

People expecting a conventional cookbook may be put off by how much of it is dedicated to the author's family history. Although the Caribbean is closer to the US, Jonathan Phang is much better known in the UK, where he grew up and lives. But as he explains, "Guyanese people are made up of the six races of the Caribbean: East Indian, Chinese, Mixed European (Creole, mostly British and Portuguese), African, North American, and indigenous Amerindian." Understanding that "between them, my parents' blood represented all of these six races" is crucial to understanding a recipe that combines soy sauce, worchestershire, ketchup, yellow mustard, dark rum, habaneros, and lime. And growing up in England as he did, where he encountered "bland, badly cooked food away from home," you appreciate his fierce attachment to the "aromatic and spicy" food his parents brought with them.

All this would only be of historical or sociological interest if the recipes themselves were disappointing, but I have yet to try anything from the book that is less than delicious. If you're after Caribbean food that's scorchingly hot, you won't find it here. For me, his recipes are a perfect balance between the hot chilies of the Caribbean, the richness of ingredients like coconut milk, the refreshing bite of lime juice and cilantro, and a blend of spices and seasonings from the cultures that came together in Guyana.

Absolutely outstanding - far more than a cook book. With evocative stories on the author's childhood, and background information on each recipe and where it originated, makes this a very special collection.

Yes, there's a back story "hectic Chinese/Caribbean" , but it doesn't make it either entertaining or knowledgeable. Cover art looks pretty, the very best bit in fact, and I'll keep it on the shelf, and if you like style over any sort of substance, you might like it better than me. Sorry, 2 negative reviews in a row now, and I generally love books...
