Présentation de l'éditeur

Diabetic alert dogs can detect when a diabetic’s blood sugar level is too high or too low with amazing accuracy (often 10 -20 minutes before their blood meter). However, the cost of purchasing a professionally trained diabetic alert dog can run as much as $20,000- making it an impossible dream for many families with type 1 diabetic children. The Ping Project proves that diabetic alert dogs can be trained at home, without the need of a professional trainer, and only the cost of having a dog in the household. Follow step-by-step how a family with a ten-year-old boy with type 1 diabetes trained an abandoned puppy to be a diabetic alert dog, and his best friend and faithful companion This book takes a different approach, often involving the child in the training process, while keeping it simple enough for the person with only a small amount of dog training knowledge to follow. The Ping Project was not written for professional dog trainers; it was written for the mom, dad, or diabetic that is interested in training their own dog.

The breakdown for accomplishing the personal training of a diabetic alert dog for a child is done so well in this book. I loved seeing the pictures showing the simple but important games for the scent training and the obvious bond established between the child and his dog. Valuable and insightful book!

The Ping Project is a "special journey" the family, Colin, Ping take together in this book. Training Ping to be a "miracle dog" and explaining everything in detail makes this book an amazing instruction manual. Colin and his best friend Ping, will help save lives when this book is properly used to train your diabetc alert dog in your home. A "special" thanks to the author, Shari Finger.

This guide is more than a manual on how to train a dog for diabetic alerts, it is also a wonderful training guide for dogs in general and their owners in particular. I learned more about how to own a pet from reading this book than I have from any other source. I also learned a lot about Type I diabetes - what it is, how it affects a person, and why a trained canine companion can make a critical difference. Much needed, and well done!

Ms. Finger uses her many years of experience in training Search and Rescue Dogs to transfer those techniques into training a Diabetic Alert Dog.

The author offers a progressive step-by-step process with several suggestions at each stage of the process to address the individualism of each dog / child relationship and the issues that may occur. She shares real situations experienced with Ping, Collin and Kendra and how they overcame temporary road blocks while building confidence to continue the training to a successful completion.

As a Registered Nurse, I was impressed with the thought and application that went into the medical aspect of training both the dog and the diabetic child from collecting sputum samples and the scent tube training to recognizing blood sugar abnormalities and the psychology of the training games and ensuing rewards.

The many pictures in the book serve as additional resources to the written procedures. The book is very down to earth in stating that the training process is not easy but perseverance can make the time invested in the dog / child relationship offer a more normal quality of life and possibly a life-saving reward to a diabetic child and the family.

This book is a logical, step-by-step process in teaching a dog to alert to a diabetic child's undetected emergencies. It gives confidence to families who need a method to constantly track the sugar lows and highs of their child to prevent a critical situation. This book is also fabulous for anyone that loves dog in understanding how a dog thinks and what makes him tick!
