There are many mindfulness-oriented self-help books available on the market. As a psychotherapist, I am often looking for self-help books that will provide my patients with ongoing training in how to apply mindfulness skills more deeply in various aspects of their life. This book avoids some of the problems that come with focusing on a particular diagnosis by instead focusing on several unhealthy processes that are found across most diagnoses. That is, this book gets to the core of how mindfulness can be helpful for just about everyone, regardless of whether or not you have any particular diagnosis.

Dr. Baer distills her broad training in mindfulness-based approaches into this book. I was struck at how she was able to string together the best of what each approach has to offer. Her grounding in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) shows itself with the way she validates the reader's struggles by explaining why it is perfectly understandable for one to fall into "psychological traps" that make them unhappy. This validating style frees the reader from unnecessary shame and self-criticism about their own psychological traps. Her training in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is exemplified in a fantastic chapter on the identification of personal values, which is one of the clearest and most practical guides on the subject I have ever read. Similarly, her training in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is evident from her focus on rumination, self-criticism, and self-compassion. Her inclusion of mindful yoga and other practices from mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) are also a lovely addition.

While many authors attempt to present one particular mindfulness-based therapy in a self-help package, The Practicing Happiness Workbook instead integrates key processes from all of them without simply becoming a review of these therapies. Importantly, Baer provides a broader framework for learning key mindfulness skills based on her years of scientific work on the assessment of dispositional mindfulness, which has focused on scientifically identifying which aspects of mindfulness are responsible for its broad usefulness. She highlights many insights from her work in this area throughout the book.

A must-read for anyone looking for a straightforward yet gentle guide to applying mindfulness in strategic ways so that it can have the broadest possible impact in your life and your pursuit of sustainable happiness.

A very well written and informative read. It includes excellent anecdotes to explain crucial concepts and worksheets the reader can use to practice skills. I would recommend it to anyone interested in incorporating mindfulness into their lives.

I think this workbook is unique because it does an excellent job connecting the benefits of mindfulness practice to common psychological problems with which most of us struggle. Its very clear and user friendly and my patients have been receptive so far.

There are so many things about this book that I liked. It is a clear and pleasant read. I felt like was drinking a glass of fresh water. But is also so very useful. And I think this is because Dr. Baer is not only one of the major researchers in the area of mindfulness, but she is also a highly respected therapist. This book reflects these dual sources of wisdom on the topic. Readers can use the book with great confidence that the ideas are well tested and that they represent the best of what is known about mindfulness. Read it, work with it --- you will be happy that you did!
