Not quite the Psychopathy Bible...but almost 24 avril 2000
Par Jonathan Cook - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
J. Reid Meloy's book provides a fascinating insight into the mind of the psychopath and is perhaps one of the most comprehension books on psychopathy since Hervey Cleckley's masterpiece, "The Mask of Sanity". This book is divided into four sections that discuss origins and previous theories, the psychopath's experience of emotion, the importance of aggression in the psychopathic mind, and treatment plans for psychopathy. While the first two sections on previous theories and psychopathic emotion are difficult to read because of the technical vocabulary terms, they still provide key information concerning the creation and signiture traits of a psychopathic individual. The reading becomes easier once Meloy starts to discuss certain case studies and the treatments he has used and studyied. The increased readibility does not mean that this book loses value for a clinician. On the contrary, I believe that this is a book that all individuals who are interested in understanding and identifying the psychopath, clinicians and lay persons alike, should read. Meloy's book is mainly from a forensic perspective and therefore almost all of his case studies involve criminal psychopaths. One important distinction not made clear in this book is that not all psychopaths are criminals. However, this distinction is not severely detrimental to the quality of the book, and it is still an excellent and very comprehensive source on this disturbing, yet interesting mental disorder.

Extremely insightful research 18 mars 2012

I am learning a great deal reading this book: it is so much more insightful, serious and detailed than Hare's Without Conscience. This book is highly technical but it is still comprehensible to an educated reader who's not a specialist in the field. Serious reading, but well worth the effort.

The Psychopathic Mind by J. Reid Meloy 17 juillet 2012

If you are not a professional associated with neurobiology, modern psychoanalytic and psychiatric language, be forewarned! I liked this book, though towards the end I was utterly lost in the dry and rarified ethers of Rorschach analysis. All in all, I feel better about myself for having completed better than 96% of this book and understanding maybe 98% of what I did read. If you have an earnest interest in the subject of psychopathy, then this is required reading.

The most detailed book in psychopathy I've yet to read. 15 novembre 2010

This book is absolutely amazing. I've read it twice and both times I was unable to put it down. I've had the pleasure of meeting Dr Meloy and find him articulate, knowledgeable, and engaging. He is one of the true professionals within the forensic psych community. His work is extremely accurate and his study in child psychopathy is fascinating. I'm looking forward to all his future writings as I'm sure they will be just as interesting and informative as this one.

Metaphysics as your guide to psychopathy. 21 août 2012
Par Phyllis Antebi Ph.D - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Metaphysics is your best guide to understanding the 'Psychopathic Mind' (see Iris Murdoch's, 'Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals'). When it comes to experiencing this personality disorder, even on the most elementary level, psychopaths will confuse and distract you from using your common sense. These persons are masters at manipulation and escaping detection not only from the stranger beside him/her, but from those closest: lovers, parents, friends, employers. Common is not a word I would use to describe the mind of the psychopath. As a matter of fact, understanding such complex traits as make up this style, will lead you into a maze of sorts, from which you may not recover with your own sanity in tact. However, if you so dare to enter this realm of clinical psychology, the best in depth analysis is, 'The Psychopathic Mind', by the renowned, Reid Meloy. You could read it, study it, and discuss this book with colleagues and friends, but you will not really enjoy it. This is a book for those who embrace the challenges of Psychoanalytic thinking and are not discouraged by theoretical depth such as The Rorschach Test provides. When you are finished with this book, you will put it aside, but just for a while. As time goes by you will refer to Meloy's remarkable book, just to remind yourself that instinct driven characters are looking for their next 'target'. As 'The Gift of Fear', warns us, anyone can be used to fill the psychopath's narcissistic needs. Hopefully, it won't be you!
