Descriptions du produit

It's hard enough coming out, but playing basketball for a nationally ranked school and trying to figure out your sexual identity in the closeted and paranoid world of big-time college sports-that's a challenge. Kate Fagan's love for basketball and for her religious teammates at the University of Colorado was tested by the gut-wrenching realization that she could no longer ignore the feelings of otherness inside her. In trying to blend in, Kate had created a hilariously incongruous world for herself in Boulder. Her best friends were part of Colorado's Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where they ran weekly Bible studies and attended an Evangelical Free Church. For nearly a year, Kate joined them and learned all she could about Christianity-even holding their hands as they prayed for others "living a sinful lifestyle." Each time the issue of homosexuality arose, she felt as if a neon sign appeared over her head, with a giant arrow pointed downward. During these prayer sessions, she would often keep her eyes open, looking around the circle at the closed eyelids of her friends, listening to the earnestness of their words. Kate didn't have a vocabulary for discussing who she really was and what she felt when she was younger; all she knew was that she had a secret. In The Reappearing Act, she brings the reader along for the ride as she slowly accepts her new reality and takes the first steps toward embracing her true self.

An Excellent Read 28 avril 2014

Though this book is a coming out story in the world of women's collegiate basketball, I believe it is much more about acceptance of who you are and who you want to be. It is the struggle with a society that tells us who we should be, how we should act, and who we should love.

Kate Fagan shares her struggle and journey through a world that is not very accepting. Unfortunately, it is a story that many have gone through and many are still going through in the world of women's sports. I applaud Kate Fagan for her courage in writing a book that is long overdue.

Emotional and thought-provoking 28 avril 2014

Emotional and thought-provoking, The Reappearing Act can be tough to read at times because you can feel Kate pouring her heart out onto the pages. That said, I thought it was a page-turner and read it from start to finish in one sitting.

Although Kate's story is about coming out, I think that the content transcends the gay community, and I also found it to be the story of a young woman figuring out the path to success and happiness, and how sports helped her in that process.

Hits the nail on the head 29 mai 2014

I liked her description of what her inner most feelings were and the turmoil with her emotions. It really captured, for me, every feeling that most of us encounter. I have straight friends that are interested in reading the book to get a better perspective, that being gay is not a decision that is made when you wake one morning. It can and is a scary transition that imposes fear, self doubt, self worth and prospect of losing friends that just don't understand.

Love, love, love!! 14 mai 2014

It is uncanny how similar my college years were to Kate’s. Division III runner, evangelical roommate, struggled with guilt and shame about my sexuality during college and for a couple of years after. Fortunately, once I escaped the damaging influence of conservative Christians in my life, I was able to find who I was and am happier now for it. This book helps validate all of the confusion, guilt, and mixed up feelings that I struggled with for so long. Despite the good intentions of the conservative Christians in my life, their intolerance was ultimately damaging to my sense of self worth and to my religious convictions.

Who will benefit from this book:
- Conservative Christians who wish to take a hard look at how their well-meaning evangelism makes gays and lesbians feel like second class citizens.
- Any gay or lesbian who has struggled to marry their sexuality to their conservative Christian upbringing.
