Revue de presse

'This book deserves to be read. It combines the speed of a thriller with the knowledge of an art historian' Jeffrey Archer. --Review.

Présentation de l'éditeur

A centuries-old conspiracy is about to explode into the present with devastating consequences.

The first victim was forced to swallow stones. The second was whipped to death. The third was stabbed in the heart.

A deadly serial killer is taking people down across London and New York. What did they all know? Why were they butchered? Who else is in the killer's sights? And how can they be stopped?

Inspired by real events in the artist's life, The Rembrandt Secret is an incredible page-turner that combines deadly murder and the hidden truth behind one of the world's most famous artists.

En savoir plus sur l'auteur

Welcome, I write conspiracy thrillers set in the art world.

My first thriller was THE REMBRANDT SECRET; my second THE LEGACY OF BLOOD; and now I'm very excited about the third book of this series - just published - called THE MEMORY OF BONES, about Goya.

All my books take an artist from the past, whose work - or life - resonates in the 21st Century -- with devastating consequences.

Come into my world. It's addictive.

j'aime beaucoup les romans d'Alex Connor, surtout en anglais, la finesse des dialogues ressort mieux que traduit plus ou moins bien.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Maybe I just have to be different 4 mai 2011
Par wonderactivist - Publié sur Amazon.com
I read the negative review in PW and didn't get it. Perhaps the problem is in calling this book a thriller. Sure, she caught my attention with Rembrandt--but also my cynicism, you know, since Da Code.

The Other Rembrandt reads more like a historical romance meets thrilling mystery, with art. Likable characters, titillating details, and a twisty plotline made me love this book. I START a lot of books--never finish loads of 'em. If I lose interest, there are half a dozen more waiting on the bedside table.

I finished this one quickly 'cause I cared about Owen's dilemma from the start--and wanted to know who killed him. I felt sympathy for Marshall and was intrigued by Geertje Dircx. Her viewpoint is the strongest part of this book.

The Other Rembrandt is truly about the people--Marshall, Geertje, Samuel, Lillian, Georgia, Charlotte and even Tobar--how art, art scams, and cutthroat dealing affect them.

My biggest beef--it made me dislike one of my favorite artists.

Still, it's worth it.

Note: I've not read the other books in the series.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Art history/thriller 19 mars 2011

Alexandra Connor has done a good job! I picked up this book without even knowing it was written by Alexandra Connor. I thought it was written by a guy named Alex Connor, who I'd never heard of before. As I read on, I realised that this has to be written by an experienced writer. That she is. In the post-Dan Brown age, a novel on art history is bound to draw attention, and I hope this book gets all the attention it deserves. I haven't read her other works, especially the ones on Rembrandt's monkey, and it's possible that she has a grudge against Rembrandt. But this book made me think, perhaps, it's true. I'm a big fan of 17-18th century Dutch art, and I was in home territory as far as this novel is concerned. I never thought Carel Fabritius was a minor Dutch artist, he was quite big in his own right. But maybe not an old master.

After all, this is a thriller, and a well-written one. This novel has that quality of being un-put-downable. I have, unfortunately, been through plenty of Dan Brown clones, most of which I stopped reading less than half way through. This is not one of them. It's somewhat laid back, it makes you revisit your coffee-table books on Rembrandt, if you have them, and it makes you look at Rembrandt's paintings in a new light. If that's what she had intended, then she has succeeded.

As a thriller, this is good enough. If you're into art history, this is even better. I would say, good job, Alex!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Author’s art passion deftly poured in crime tale of unexpected twists and dark secrets 20 mars 2014
Par Helpful Advice - Publié sur Amazon.com
With ‘The Rembrandt Secret’ written by Alex Connor, the author deftly poured her passion for art history in crime tale of unexpected twists and dark secrets, and after reading it you’ll look Rembrandt and his works in different way.

Owen Zeigler owns a gallery in London. The passion for painting was conveyed to him by his father, but few wrong judgments and the recession, which has crept into all aspects of society including the arts, will bury him in debt. Desperate, he will call his son Marshall asking him for help. Marshall, to help his father in trouble, will visit his longtime friend Samuel Hemmingson who will discover him long kept theory of his father - never revealed secret of the great Rembrandt van Rijn. Marshall, who never been a big fan of art, intrigued by the story of Samuel will go to his father to hear the rest of the story, but will find him murdered.

It becomes apparent that Marshall’s father went into things bigger than himself, and that he paid the secret of the great painter with his life. However, Marshall will learn that his father was not the only person who knows the secret, that some other people close to him knew it as well. And now because Marshall knows it as well he will become prey of those who may not allow the secret to be revealed...

The author skillfully intervened art world in crime story, and her finely knowledge of art history made this work credible and intriguing. Mixing fiction and reality, she shed light on the lesser known facts about Rembrandt's life and revealed closed world of art dealers - "the world with its own rules and punishments".

However, although it is a thriller, Alex Connor has not managed to maintain declining tension in some parts of the novel, but what she has certainly succeeded was the characterization of her protagonists. She exhaustively defined psychological profile for each character, while omitting the physical, leaving it to the imagination of the reader. If one aspect should be single out, the highest quality part of the novel is the unexpected twist at the end that will not leave anyone indifferent.

In conclusion, ‘The Rembrandt Secret’ is a solid thriller that can be recommended for reading, especially for those who share the author's passion for the arts, while those seeking intense action could be a bit disappointed.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Weak premise 19 novembre 2012

The writing is decent, the events mostly interesting, the premise intriguing but the basic story and the main character's behavior make no sense. This is a writer who, with a stronger foundation, could dazzle.
SPOILER--The Main character has diary entries from Rembrandt's mistress, that are authentic and list paintings done by Rembrandt's son but passed of as his own. There is no equivocation, no doubt to validity, the diary is real and there is a clear list of fakes-- but Marshall doesn't want it made public because it will rock the art world...? Shouldn't it? I really don't see the issue, and that makes it all fall apart for me. If he were fleeing bad guys while trying to find the last entry or get it authenticated, then okay...if the cops were corrupt and he was fleeing to another jurisdiction for help, then okay but no--he is just withholding information....Plus the London cops think his father was TORTURED TO DEATH by robbers...who then took nothing...? ARGH!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic Read 27 décembre 2012
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com
The Other Rembrandt is a fantastic read. The writing, storyline, and characters are addicting. I tried to savor it by putting it down once in a while so I could have more to look forward to later but found I couldn't put it down. Everyone who enjoys a good book and history interwoven with powerful imagination and storytelling will enjoy this book. Smooth as paint on canvas.
