Présentation de l'éditeur

“The Rhinegold & The Valkyrie: The Ring of the Nibelung – Volume 1” is a modern (2011) English translation of the first 2 operas of German composer Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle combined with 32 beautiful color illustrations by Arthur Rackham. Volume 2 with the remaining two operas will be available as a Kindle ebook shortly.

This new translation makes it very easy to follow the storylines of “The Rhinegold” (Das Rheingold) and “The Valkyrie” (Die Walküre), as they are written in the modern style of English unlike the 100 year or older translations that are generally available. New fans of The Ring Cycle will be able to focus on the story rather than struggling to interpret the nuances of old English prose. The integrity of Wagner’s characters has been preserved and Rackham’s illustrations add another dimension, helping bring the characters to life while also portraying the fantastic settings that form the backdrop to the drama.

This book is a must have to accompany listening to, or watching, The Ring Cycle being performed. It's best viewed in color on Kindle for iPhone/iPad/iPod, Android/Blackberry or Kindle for PC or other devices where you can make the most of Rackham’s color illustrations. (Standard Kindle is currently black and white only).

Having decided to "do" the Ring at the age of nearly 70, I needed a guide to the action, and chose this and the other book, as ebooks on my Kindle. This is B & W so I lost the really great illustrations in colour. This is, as far as I can tell, a continuous translation of the words and action/scenes. It is useful when listening for the 1st few times. The downside is that the translation is into what sounds like 1930s American street vernacular. This rather degrades the enjoyment as serious big moments are reduced to commonplace. So, if you want to just follow the Ring this is fine. If you want a sense of majesty and moment, this is not it.

The books (this and the other in the series by this translator) are relatively true to the story, but the colloquialisms and "American southern drawl" vernacular are distracting. I can honestly say that I never suspected Wagner to have used the expression "y'all" ("you all" is used many times out of context)...

Worth the read if you want to be acquainted with the story. Useless if you are trying to immerse yourself in this important saga.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good intro 16 août 2013

If you don't speak German then this translation of Wagners first two operas from his The Ring of the Nibelung series is a good intro. Of course, as a non-German speaker I can't be completely sure as to how faithful the translation is, but there are a few points where the majesty of the moment are somewhat lost due to, as other reviewers have mentioned, the 1930's take on speech. While this does serve to downplay the bigger moments, I'd still recommend this translation as a good starter for those interested in Wagners works. The illustrations, however, are great, and there are many of them littered throughout the book....probably worth the price of the book alone...but then again, I am a bit of a nut for that stuff!

The Rhinegold and The Valkyrie, of course, are the first two of the four operas of Richard Wagner's `The Ring of the Nibelung,' and this translation by Dan McGlaun into the English language makes Wagner's masterpieces easily accessible to those who can't speak German. This book's uses are manifold, but let me point out the two obvious: for literary enjoyment (if you'd just love to read for yourself why Wagner was one of the most important German composers of his generation) and also if you'd want to stage a local production of `The Ring of the Nibelung.'

It's important to point out that this volume still has Arthur Rackham's beautiful illustrations (now classic), which deeply add to the atmosphere of the story--the images blend well with the imagined scenes, especially if you're reading on a color screen (Kindle Fire or any Android tablet or PC).

Overall, `The Rhinegold and The Valkyrie' is an excellent, competent translation, and there are many helpful notes throughout the book to further aid readers. Whether you're looking for a helpful reference on Richard Wagner and his most important works, or just trying to sate your curiosity about what the fuss is about this whole enduring fuss regarding `The Ring of the Nibelung' or if you just want to produce it in your local theatre, this volume is for you.

Highly recommended!
