4.0 étoiles sur 5 What a Great Book 29 avril 2014

Originally reviewed for Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and Fantasy

What a great book! The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride is book Three in Victoria Alexander's Millworth Manor Series and like all Ms. Alexander's work it's unique and fun.

The title alone grabs you doesn't it? And even more so when you realise that the Sister involved is the epitome of all that is proper. But sometimes all that proper is hiding something.

Delilah, the very proper widowed Lady Hargate, wanted an adventure. For once she wanted to slip the bounds that held her tied to propriety and experience life. A trip with her sister to New York seemed just the thing. And when she met the very dashing assistant to Mr Moore, she thought this was it. A chance to be wild. So "Mrs. Hargrove" and a clandestine evening with "Mr. Moore" and that was it.

Samuel Russell a self made and very respected businessman, met the "slightly impoverished, distant relative" of his best friend's fiance and was instantly attracted. "Mrs. Hargate" mistook him for his assistant and he was quirky enough to let it slide, if it made her feel more at ease, who would it hurt? Instant attraction turns into something more and while he wishes she wanted more he respects her wishes to not see each other again.

Fast forward four months to the wedding of the century...Sam shows up to his best friend's wedding only to discover that Mrs. Hargate is really Lady Hargate and she's not the impoverished anything, she's the bride's sister. Who really wants to keep him delegated to the past. If only she really believed that all that doth protesting too much.. But Sam understands her stance if not her feelings and tries to respect her wishes, he really does. Except dealing with her is just too much fun.

You have to feel for Delilah, she has spent her entire life as the unwanted sister (to her beautiful older twin sisters). So she has made herself into the practical, dutiful daughter. She even managed to fall in love with the "perfect" husband her mother found for her. And he too rejected the real Delilah and only wanted the "perfect" shell. So one can understand her feelings about love. It's painful and not to be trusted.

Ms. Alexander does a wonderful job of sharing the story of rock meeting hard place. Delightfully strong characters without being strident or overbearing. Just two people who belong together and have to figure it out for themselves.

Excellent job!

While I loved Sam. Delilah was much harder to warm up to.

Delilah was a bit off putting in the previous book and stayed true to form in this book as well. She is attracted to Sam and does her best to convince both herself and Sam that the are totally wrong for each other.

It wasn't until about halfway though the book that the reader begins to understand why she acts the way she does. And even when I understood - I still found her to be annoying and ridiculous.

I was a bit disappointed with Sam near the end as well - he just quit (not that I blame him) but this is a romance novel and I expected more from him. Rest assured, it all works out in the end. But not until the VERY end.

I wouldn't say this is one of my favorite Victoria Alexander books and it isn't a keeper. But the writing is excellent and the banter between the characters is very amusing. I don't regret reading the book and look forward to Teddy's story.

Title: The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride
Series: Millworth Manor bk 3
Author: Victoria Alexander
Genre: Historical Romance
Blurb:The bride and groom cordially request the presence of…

The bride’s sister, Delilah, the very proper widowed Lady Hargate, and Samuel Russell, the groom’s friend, a very eligible, slightly improper bachelor, at their upcoming wedding.

Lady Hargate and Mr. Russell, previously acquainted during one unforgettable night in New York City when caution—and clothing—were thrown to the wind will choose to pretend they have never met before.

The lady plans to avoid love and its complications at all costs. The gentleman intends to change her mind.

Guests are invited to enjoy the many diversions of Millworth Manor—delightful grounds, lavish drawing rooms, secluded corners—and the chance to discover that one night may have been only the beginning.

The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride is such a handful to say when people asked me what book was I reading, yet for some reason, very easy to remember; so bravo Miss Alexander for the clever title. I love this book and was totally disappointed at the ending. Let me tell you why.

Lady Delilah Hargate, when she was in America decided to have an adventure, of the scandalous kind. But after her adventure was over she told her companion in no uncertain terms that it would be best if they never saw each other again. Seeing as she thought she'll never see him again, since he is an American and she lives in England, that she was safe. Boy was she surprised when he showed up three weeks before her sister's wedding and worse yet, he's a dear friend of the groom and is a guest.

Samuel Russell on the other hand, felt a special connection with this lady and since he cannot get her out of his mind, he decided to arrive in England earlier than expected. Imagine to his surprise when he learned who she really was and that he was less than welcomed greeting from Delilah.

Now that these two has come together again Delilah wants to act like they never saw each other whilst Samuel wants nothing more to pick up where they left off. Can these two get what they both want when they are both more stubborn than a mule. You've got to read to find out.

At first I did not like Delilah, she was a proper lady. She was mean, rude and annoying but as the book went along I realized that it was not her fault and that ladies who are prim and proper needs love too, but oh my goodness, do they have to be so stubborn about it.

Victoria Alexander has written a truly humorous and fun book to read that had me disappointed at the end because it was a bout to end. I wished it could have gone on more,(sigh) but that is the drawback of books, they have to end at some point.

I cannot wait to read another book from Miss Victoria, she has risen my try something new bar really high.

Thoughts: It ended to soon

Delilah, the lovely widowed Viscountess Hargate and youngest daughter of the Channing family of Millworth Manor, was as perfectly proper and respectable a woman as she was practical. This made her the perfect choice to accompany her sister Camille, and Camille's fiancé Grayson, to New York and act as a chaperone for the couple while Gray was there to settle some business affairs.

But while in New York Delilah daringly decides to attend a masked ball held at the hotel they were staying in and wears a charming, though risqué, Dresden shepherdess costume. Now, Delilah was not normally the type of woman to wear risqué costumes to masked balls, but doing so allowed her a certain amount of freedom, a sense of excitement, and the enticing air of adventure as well. She could be someone other than the respectable, perfectly proper, and practical Lady Hargate, if only for an evening's frolic.

Unfortunately, that rare sense of freedom and adventure was probably the culprit responsible for allowing her inhibitions to run a little wild, and consequently permitting her to indulge in an extremely intimate rendezvous--a night of delicious passion and wild abandon--in the bed of a man that she scarcely knew.

Well, Delilah was certainly not the type of woman to do that, and she never had before, but THAT was exactly what she had done. And now she's realized that however utterly delightful the encounter with the very handsome American may have been, it--and Mr. Samuel Russell--was a mistake best forgotten. She's convinced they could never possibly suit as their backgrounds were much too different.

Beyond that, she would be returning home to England shortly and with a vast ocean between them, they would likely never see each other again. So Delilah vows to put Samuel, their scandalous indiscretion, and her little adventure firmly behind her and go back to her well-ordered life.

Regrettably, Sam, on the other hand, swears he will not forget anything about the lovely Delilah or their wild night of passion.

And when 4 months later Sam surprisingly shows up at Millworth Manor, presumably to attend Camille and Grayson's wedding, the adventure--and fun--is really about to begin...

In The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride, Victoria Alexander takes readers to 1887 New York City, then back to England and Millworth Manor; the majestic family estate of the Earl and Countess of Briston, and their charismatic and delightfully eccentric family and friends.

I loved everything about Delilah and Samuel's romance and hated for this wonderful story to end. The discussions, interactions, and banter between the hero and heroine and Millworth Manor's entire "unique" ensemble of characters was so marvelously clever, spirited, and genuinely amusing--that that I was completely absorbed with their antics from beginning to end. And personally, I wouldn't mind being part of this likable family because I know life would certainly never be dull. :)

I thought Delilah and Samuel were extremely well-matched leading characters. I loved the chemistry between them and felt their intimate "tête-à-tête" conversations were heartfelt and pleasantly provocative. Even with their hugely different cultures--American capitalist vs English nobility--and philosophies, they still complemented each other wonderfully, and their differences made for very entertaining and stimulating conflict in the storyline. Samuel was an ideal hero, but I felt Delilah experienced the most growth throughout the story, and she's become one of my favorite heroines. Keep in mind, however, that when a perfectly proper and normally sensible woman is near to bursting with pent-up emotions and ripe for adventure as well, everyone should watch out when she finally lets her hair down. ;)

Ms. Alexander did a marvelous of job balancing the couple's personal strengths and weaknesses while showing them (and the reader) that it's through considerate and sincere compromise that any relationship can work, and when it does, the future holds countless possibilities for happiness. I felt Delilah and Sam could truly look forward to a future filled with all the wonder of new inventions and innovative ideas blended together with the best of time-honored customs and traditions, as together they began the most exciting adventure of all--Love.

One of the reasons I love historical romance is because I enjoy reading stories about bygone eras and the people who may have lived in that particular time. I find learning about past customs, societies, social order, and early advances in technology fascinating.

Though Victoria Alexander writes and creates stories about purely fictional people, circumstances, and events, I love the way she always incorporates factual historical details throughout her books. And she does it in such a skillful and competent manner that they merge seamlessly within the storyline and feel integral and authentic. This makes for a harmonious blend of fact, fiction, history, enchanting romance, sparkling dialogue, humorous situations--and an excellent book. And The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride is one that shouldn't be missed!

A true delight. I love the Millworth Manor series. This story focuses on Delilah, the youngest sister, who in prior stories has been a bit of a pill--overly moralistic and not a likable kind of person. Delilah has a one night stand while in NY, thinking she will never again encounter the amazing American she is so attracted to. Turns out, however, the H Sam is actually very close friends and business partners with Delilah's soon-to-be brother-in-law. Sam shows up for the wedding and the sparks still fly between him and Delilah.
Delilah, however, cannot trust her heart and her judgment. She was married once before and fell in love with her husband who just could not love her in return. Some reviewers found Delilah annoying and a snob for wanting a "perfect" husband. That was not her motivation, however. Delilah was burned badly and very hurt, so she was wanting someone with whom she would not fall in love. And she knew from the intensity of her attraction to Sam that she was in grave danger of losing her heart. The story focuses on her fighting her growing love for Sam and her coming to realize that she was ready to take a chance again and that Sam truly loved her.
I liked the story because it showed both the H and the h coming to grips with prior bad relationships and their willingness to move on. Sam was far more likable but that was because he was idealistic and optimistic and willing to take another gamble on love. Delilah needed to be brought to that realization, and to wake up to the opportunity to seize love and grow in her life.
The story dealt with well with the growing relationship between the sisters. I found it a very touching tale.
