5.0 étoiles sur 5 An Emotional Ride, Action and Suspense With a Romance For The Ages 15 octobre 2013
Par Douglas C. Meeks - Publié sur Amazon.com

I am thinking that authors wait to release some of their best books until later in the year just to have reviewers like me sound like idiots repeating ourselves about "this is the best thing this year' and similar accolades. I think I have said that about 3-4 times this year already. All that is to prepare you for me to say it again, this may actually be THE best thing I have read this year even though since it is book 1 of a trilogy the story is not complete yet.

Malachi is one of the Irin, a race of mostly males that have inscribed magical symbols/spells into their skin to allow them to fight off attacks to humanity by the Grigori a race of mixed blood of The Fallen.

Ava is a young woman, professional photographer that has been hearing "voices" all her life and has managed through mainly strength of will to remain sane.

Through her meeting and developing relationship with Malachi she has found out some of the answers to her "voices" but not all. This quest for knowledge and a romance that crosses all barriers will be the crux of this series.

This seems to be a romance at the heart of the story since that is what drives much of the action and to paraphrase another reviewer, this is indeed the best mix of romance and action I have read in years, the mix of good, evil, and powerful beings with motives that are completely unknown are all thrown together in a mix of fantasy, romance and action that is addicting to the reader and by the end of the book you will be desperate for the next release.

The ending while stirring elements of tragedy, hope and frustration is not a cliffhanger but does indeed hook you into the next book shamelessly which is what a good author is supposed to do but it does make us mere mortals wish for time to pass quickly so we can see what happens next.

This has all the feel of an epic story as was her earlier Elemental Mysteries series of 4 books but this story seems to be taking it to a much higher level and now I anxiously await the next installment.

5 Stars and I can only hope the other books in this series will be as exceptional.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Emotional start to a new series - I had a hard time leaving this world behind when I was done 15 octobre 2013

Modern day Turkey, with its rich history and exotic flavor, makes for a fabulous setting for the long lived Irin race who provide the 'paranormal' for the paranormal aspect of this paranormal romance.

There are so many things that I loved about the story which follows travel photographer Ava - who has feared for her sanity due to the 'voices' she's always heard - as she discovers the existence of the Irin and the reason for her brand of 'insanity'. The mythos surrounding the Irin is as rich as the setting and the reveal of their history has a real emotional impact, but what really makes this story live are the people who inhabit the world of the Scribe.

I really liked both Ava, who was strong and intelligent in spite of her affliction, and her 'bodyguard' Malachi, who was the perfect combination of powerful and vulnerable and controlled and passionate. The romance between Ava and Malachi was wonderful, it unfolded slowly allowing me to fall in love along with Ava and Malachi as they fell in love with each other. When the pair finally came together physically it was all about the passion and emotions of their connection, making those love scenes explosive without using a ton of explicit language.

The Scribe gets a full five stars me because I had a hard time leaving the world and the characters behind - even several days later I was still rereading some the scenes surrounding the more powerful emotional moments of the story. Now I am anxiously awaiting, The Singer, the next book of the trilogy since the ending to the Scribe left me with lots of questions unanswered. I can't wait to see where Ava goes from here and I am crossing my fingers that we will start getting some of the answers to the mysteries surrounding her.

Complimentary copy for review courtesy of the author, this is an unpaid review and my opinions are my own. **ETA - I liked this so much that I bought my own copy for my keeper library.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Left hanging yet again.... 11 novembre 2013

I really love all her other books, but this one failed for me. I thought that it left too many things hanging at the end, and I really hate it when a book chops off with no warning leaving you no choice but to get the next one. This sort of thing is like the cliffhanger at the end of a tv season that wants you to watch the next season too. The whole things screams of manipulation to me, and seems to be happening too often lately in books. Although I wasn't so impressed with the book overall I liked the two main characters and now I have to get the next book to see what happens, but I'm not too happy about feeling forced into it. Maybe someone will post a really in depth review and that will answer any of my remaining questions.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Loved so many aspects of this story 30 octobre 2013

The world building was simply superb. The ending, while I suppose necessary for the ongoing story, just left me feeling manipulated. I usually buy works by this author as soon as they are released. With these kinds of endings, I tend to wait until the next one in the series is going to be released before investing my emotions in the story. As I understand the next one in the series is several months away.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 so disappointed 14 décembre 2013

Let me preface this by saying I've read the entire Hidden Fire series and loved it. It was well developed with likable, interesting well-rounded characters. How did the author get away with basically writing fan fiction of her own series? While I admit she has a creative imagination, this series feels like it is a combination of Hidden Fire and maybe Elizabeth Naughton's Eternal Guardian series (which I thought was formulaic and silly, but fun.) She has proven to me that as far as character development goes, she only has one female and one male character for her heroine/ hero repertoire. Ava and Malachi are essentially Beatrice and Giovanni with new names. Best friend, Rhys, is Carwyn without the Hawaiian shirts. Even some of the heroes' background stories line up. The female character is emotionally scarred and cynical; the male hero is taciturn and utterly protective and devoted. There are more similarities but not worthy of my rehashing them. Assuming I liked The Hidden Fire, which I already said I did, then one could assume I would like this too, if they were so similar. If I dismiss the fact that the author did not create any new characters, which leads me to be disappointed with her writing skills, I would still be disappointed because A and M are mere shadows of B and G and their relationship evolves in a more rushed, undeveloped fashion. Malachi has been around for several centuries but never bothers to discuss his past with his one true love. (All we learn is that he was an only child who was doted on by his supernatural parents.) Oh please - within several weeks they take a complete switch and are mated for life. Each is the other's destiny, so to speak which is fine and good, but where is the passion and tension that B and G experienced throughout their entire book? Hunter has lowered herself to cheap borderline-erotic thrills without the benefit of a well-developed and interesting relationship. Even the dialogue between Malachi and Ava is shallow and sparse. The story line (fallen angels/ good versus evil/ ancient scribes, etc) is creative enough (though not particularly original) but not mind-blowing drama.
