The sea: turbulent and leaden, transparent and opaque, magician and mother... When Charles Arrowby, over sixty, a demi god of the theatre -- director, playwright and actor -- retires from his glittering London world in order to 'abjure magic and become a hermit', it is to the sea that he turns. I thorougly enjoyed reading this book. Iris Murdoch is simply magical in her description of life in its everyday routine and also its mystical aspects. The character of Charles Arrowby with his king size ego and his obsession for an old flame bordering on the manical has been wonderfully constructed. The portrait of his cousin James is just brilliant. A man tale from a man's point of view, one has no clue of what the women in the novel think. A compulsive page turner as well, it is the first time I read Ms Murdoch and I am surely going to buy some more!

a truly awesome reading experience, at the same time crime, family drama, philosophical meditation, and what else!! At the beginning I thought "oh no, not another husband/wife/lover triangle...". But I was soon mesmerized! What the other commentary says is quite right, especially about the man's point of view: a real tour de force, it does not smack of a woman desperately trying to get inside her male character's head. The allusions to Bhuddism, on the surface casual and offhand, actually structure the book at a deep level: clever!!
