3.0 étoiles sur 5 More Classic Science Fiction is Less 14 décembre 2011
Par John M. Ford - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
This is the second Science Fiction Megapack, following the success of the first volume, The Science Fiction Megapack: 25 Modern & Classic Tales by Masters. These 25 additional stories are also from science fiction's golden age. Many show their years with plot clichés and out-of-date science.

Five stories that stood out--

Fritz Leiber's "What's He Doing in There?" joins an ordinary Earth family as they speculate about the bathroom habits of a visiting alien. Yes, you read it right.

Alfred Bester's "Adam and No Eve" explores a devastated planet with a man returning from space. He doesn't see life anywhere around him.

Nina Kiriki Hoffman's "Universal Donor" examines the growing connection between a lab worker and an organism being "farmed" for transplantable organs.

Mack Reynolds' "Revolution" looks at the men and motives that lead to a revolution, and whatever comes after it. It teaches a lesson from history.

In Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Planet Savers" a doctor creates a new identity to communicate with the natives who raised him. The stakes are high.

The collection has some interesting stories. But set your expectations lower than the title suggests. These stories are not the same caliber as those in the first volume.

WORST EDITING JOB EVER!! The first story starts over at the beginning three times and restarts in the middle once.

Or so it appeared at first glance. Turns out the fault was with the transcription software and the story is intact and just as it appeared the first time I read it many years ago.

The Mega-pack series has collected many memorable stories in each edition, and this is the second in a series that now numbers six. They are roughly chronological, Mega-pack six has stories about i-phone apps and text messages across time. Everything in this volume is twentieth century, mostly from the post-war years.

These are stories that were published in the magazines devoted to imagination, fantasy, and short stories. Enjoy!

Hey, I love a deal just like anyone else and this is a good deal. Who wouldn't want a pile of great stories by great authors for 99 cents?

Here's the reason for my low review.

The text is thrown together, obviously in an attempt to make a quick buck. The first story is screwed up, it seems like it was cut and pasted from elsewhere by a two year old. Spelling mistakes abound, which baffles me because these aren't original stories. These are stories that have been edited and published elsewhere.

My take on it is go ahead and make that quick buck sure, but would it have killed them to at least go over their product just one more pass to make sure it's at least passable? I'm not expecting fancy, but I am expecting readable.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 a feast of science fiction for less than a buck 28 mai 2012

Are you folks kidding me, or what? 25 classic stories by authors such as Brown,Blish, Dick, delRay, Silverberg, et al. Yeah, sure some of you veteran sci-fi geeks (such as yours truly)might have several of these stories gathering dust in mouldering paperbacks on your wormeaten bookshelves.

Join the 21st century, you motheaten relics. If I can, you can for less than a buck.

You newcomers to the genre, you could not find a better introduction to the classics.
