Recently, while searching for some SF in the Kindle Store, I discovered an old favorite from my youthful past: "And Then the Town Took Off," by Richard Wilson. This essentially lightweight piece of humorous, fluff about an entire town being separated from the earth by being lifted into the sky ("Why?" "By whom--or by what?" "And what do we do now"), was originally published in 1960 as the supposedly lesser half of a $.35 Ace-Double paperback (the presumably "better" half being "The Sioux Spaceman," by Andre Norton). I found this story in the Kindle Store being offered by several publishers as a single title ebook (at various prices, the lowest being $.99), and online at Gutenberg.org (for free). After (re)reading the freebie I wanted a more "permanent" ebook edition of this short novel and was contemplating the purchase of a dollar version. That's when I came upon this "Seventh SF Megapack," and discovered that it contained the very tale I wanted AND 20+ others (all entertaining and some quite good) that I would probably not have encountered otherwise. Wow! All this, for the same price others were charging for "my" story alone!

The formatting is excellent, the stories are accessible via an active TOC, and original publishing data is provided. This collection is a terrific value, and while you may not enjoy the aforementioned story as much as I originally did (and still do), you're bound to find more than a few OTHER stories to your liking in this "7th SF Megapack" to make your purchase worthwhile.

I wish I could see the index while doing reviews. strong stories with variety and none too long. a few very alien, and several hinted to sequels, but otherwise an enjoyable collection.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The stories were all excellent and well chosen, and save for one 'The Slizzlers' flowed reasonably well. There are a few mispelled words in this collection that the editor missed. Most of them are few and far between and you can make out what the word was suppose to be when reading. Still the collection lost a star for that issue as well as the fact that two of the stories, THE SWORDSMEN OF VARNIS and KEEP OUT, had been included in previous volumes of this series. While enjoyable stories, you'd think that the publisher could provide a collection that didn't repeat stories that they had published before.

Overall this series was good. Several of the stories were quite humourous, such as GRANDPA?, by Edward M. Lerner,
TO ERR IS INHUMAN, by Marion Zimmer Bradley. WHY I LEFT HARRY’S ALL-NIGHT HAMBURGERS, by Lawrence Watt-Evans, GALACTIC CHEST, by Clifford D. Simak, and DO UNTO OTHERS, by Mark Clifton while still being thought provoking. Others like MOON DOG by Arthur C. Clarke were very touching and of course there were some extremely good classic style sci/fi such as SARGASSO OF LOST STARSHIPS, by Poul Anderson, THE TIME DISSOLVER, by Jerry Sohl, and A BRIEF DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES, by Michael Kurland.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves classic sci/fi. It is a great read for a great price.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent selection of stories 1 octobre 2013

I've been following the series of SF Megapacks, as they were very good selections. This is number seven and I wasn't disappointed! I had only read two of these stories before, all the other were new to me. The quality of the stories is excellent: good plots, interesting ideas, new twists in old plots... Both modern and vintage stories are very good. I seriously recommend this Megapack. Buy it!

I had expected just a randomly chosen bunch of obscure stories from the "golden age". In fact the "Megapack" editors seem to go about the process of selection with great care.
