Although I've read only seven of Follett's many works, I've come to expect a certain type of subject matter, and this one is very different - so much so that I was put off at first. However, his immense skill as a storyteller eventually drew me in, and I enjoyed the book. It deals with the arrival on earth of aliens from space, but not in a way that's been done before (although the upcoming Stephen King series, "Under the Dome," looks from the preview to have a superficial resemblance). You could call it sci-fi with a touch of medieval superstition. Some of the characters are not sharply drawn, and at times it was hard to remember who was who.

If I like a book a lot, i tend to re-read it several times. This one probably won't be one of them, but once I got into it, it kept me interested to the end. Just to give you a reference point, I'm not really a sci-fi fan, outside of anything by Isaac Asimov, and a sampling of two or three others.

It made me think about a lot of things. I was impressed by how the author compelled us to think about what would happen if we were suddenly catapulted back into the 19th century with the technological resources and education to survive and create an intentional community. Life is consumed by personal dramas sometimes and people gravitate to survival. Loved the education about ET's and their missions as well as how the world looked like 14,000 years ago. Captivating!

Really enjoyed the book, less complex than other things I've read of Follett's but great fun. I accidentally skipped the second book but didn't feel like I really missed anything essential. Highly recommend it as a fun light read.
