Présentation de l'éditeur

In his own personal weight-loss struggle, David Zulberg turned to the forgotten wisdom of Maimonides, a medieval Jewish expert on philosophical subjects, to find consensus on ideal nutrition and optimum physical and emotional health. After 10 years of studying volume upon volume, Zulberg was able to distill the teachings of the bible and humanity's greatest doctors, and he discovered something amazing--ancient doctors already knew what today's medical findings are rediscovering about what's best for human health, weight loss, disease prevention, and psychological well-being.

The 5 Skinny Habits explains the ancient understanding of health and its application to our lives in the 21st century and its supersize proportions. Zulberg refers to legendary thinkers as Master Physicians and, through a close study of Maimonides, integrates the spiritual, emotional, and physical components of health and weight loss. With an easy five-step plan, Zulberg tells readers how to incorporate one habit each week for 5 weeks to achieve a healthier lifestyle. His five steps streamline and simplify the process of becoming fit, ensuring that change is made for good. As readers are gradually led through the plan, they become more accustomed to living as prescribed by the ancient health experts. A simple diet diary with positive affirmations makes self-monitoring an effective and enjoyable part of the discovery. By the end of the journey, readers have incorporated the habits into their routines so completely that they are no longer "dieting" but simply living a healthier life.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Finally! A successful diet -- even at my age. 25 novembre 2014
Par Ruth E Eastman - Publié sur Amazon.com
Like most American women, I have tried a number of diets. (Hey! It's practically a national sport!) And they've been unsuccessful in the long-term, for the very reasons illustrated by David Zulberg's excellent book. "We can appreciate why we cannot simply change our behaviors or habits overnight. It's not surprising that many diets fail. Sudden changes don't take human nature into account."

Drawing from the wisdom of the ancient Master Physicians, Zulberg offers a 5-step plan of incremental changes. The plan does not require the reader to dramatically alter his or her lifestyle. And by the time one has practiced the 5 Skinny Habits in sequence, dramatic changes HAVE taken place, nearly effortlessly. I have thus far lost 14 pounds without feeling the nagging hunger and cravings I felt on other diets. A bonus: chronic stomach problems that I assumed were just part of getting older are gone! As a middle-aged person, I can attest to the fact that this diet is not just suitable for young people.

Easy to read and follow, humorously but authoritatively expressed, David Zulberg's 5 Skinny Habits could easily become a life-long habit with you -- one that cannot help but improve your quality of life.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Unlike any other program--expect permanent results, but not instantly 24 novembre 2014

Unlike most other diet books, this is not about what you can and can't do, foods you should and shouldn't eat. Instead, 5 Skinny Habits gives you principles, based on ancient physicians, who address issues surprisingly similar to what we're doing with today. I've read Zulberg's other book and actually followed these habits before, very successfully. This book is better not just in content (for example, the order of the 5 habits is different, probably based on lots of feedback and trial and error) but more significantly, in style. It's very clear and easy to read through. If you want to understand why you've tried so many times, why diets don't work, and are looking for an honest approach to both optimal health and weight loss, this book delivers all that and more.

In addition to explaining the philosophy behind weight loss, habit forming, etc, the real strength of this program is that you take on one habit at a time. Zulberg gives you a week for each one, but you can take as much time as you like before moving on to the next one. Starting with a light meal, you change one meal at a time, and then focus on eating between meals and exercise. Since each change is minor, you slowly develop that habit. Compare that to a typical diet plan, where you jump in full of energy to change everything, weigh and measure your food, and watch that initial excitement quickly dissipate. Why? It's just not sustainable. By changing your habits, however, you can take it slow, and you should--these are lifelong habits you're working on changing, and Zulberg acknowledges that. This is NOT a quick fix, but if you work through the habits and develop them slowly, you'll achieve healthy and permanent results.

The other thing I personally like about this book is that you can work the habits around your own preferences. For example, I really don't like fish, and never eat it, in any form. While Zulberg states that fish is easy to digest and has health benefits, there's no requirement to have it, so I stick with the proteins I do like.

If you want to lose 10 pounds in a week, don't bother with this. But if you want to change your habits, see lasting results, and never try another "diet" again, the principles in 5 skinny habits is the path you've been looking for.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Healthy Eating Habits and Exercise 2 décembre 2014

David Zulberg is a fan of Maimonides, a medieval expert and physician. In this book he seeks to meld wisdom from medieval texts with modern advice. Basically this book is just about eating healthy and exercising. However the changes in lifestyle habits are done gradually, changing only one habit per week for five weeks. I liked that this book also talks a little about emotional health. I would suggest however that you use stevia in your tea and coffee instead of the recommended sugar. I think of sugar as a treat and even then it can give you acid reflux. At the end of this book there are additional topics like sleep hygiene. It would have been nice if the author had included some recipes. Meal plans are given but there are no instructions on how to make the meals.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great book! 20 octobre 2014

I enjoyed reading this well-researched book that takes the trifecta of mind, body and spirit into account. Few books possess this much valuable information and are as enjoyable and easy to read. Though often skeptical about new health approaches, I found it reassuring that current and valid research is provided to support the information presented in this book. It discusses habit changes that seem simple, natural and practical, all of which make for a sustainable program and healthy lifestyle. The human body has not drastically changed over time so I can understand how these ancient principles are as applicable as ever. My favorite chapter was about habit formation, which can be applied to my health, fitness and many other areas of my life. Great book!

Yes, there are thousands of weight loss books out there and what works for one person may not work for the next. This book is working for me for a number of reasons. First of all, the five week approach to gradually incorporating new eating and exercise habits into your life is brilliant. Most of us can't undo what we've been doing for years overnight. Why would we expect this of ourselves? The book helps you to integrate the five basic principles into your life gradually. Similarly, it doesn't require a specific eating plan or specific foods. It can be relevant to just about anyone with any eating preferences and plans. Finally, the integration of ancient Jewish thinkers is quite interesting and helps to put the ideas into an historical context. I highly recommend it.
