Présentation de l'éditeur

Why do some startups succeed while other do not?

In a maturing online market, the cost of product development has fallen as quickly as competition has risen, and building a viable product is no longer enough.  In this new reality, entrepreneurs must take a smarter, more strategic approach. In this book we'll discuss:

  • Why some entrepreneurs are luckier than others
  • How to anticipate success or failure before you begin
  • Why timing is everything for a startup
  • Strategic positioning to beat the competition
  • Building a business that cannot be commoditized
  • Methods for Improving user engagement and profits

This book was written by Neal Cabage and Sonya Zhang, PhD after years of discussing and studying why some startups succeed.  By combining known academic models with personal insights from building and selling two online startups - the authors answer the question of why some startups are more successful than others, in order to help entrepreneurs reduce the risk of starting an online business.

This book reads like a manifesto on effective internet product strategy. I really liked that. A few excellent points about product vision product positioning. Timing and competitive strategy were particularly well covered. I really liked the balance of new insights with coverage of the more well-known academic models. It felt really well thought through and comprehensive. I don't think I've ever read another book that did such a good job of tying it all together. Thumbs up from me!

It's getting harder and harder to find a decent job in America. More than half of all Americans are living on a very low income, and more and more are living on poverty wages. It seems like now, more than ever, is the best time to consider becoming an entrepreneur and going into business for yourself. You just can't rely on the job market anymore.

This book is great because it goes into detail about why some people are more successful than others. It explains a lot of the psychological research that will determine why some people will become rich, and others will fail. It also has a lot of useful ideas about how to determine what type of products the market demands and the proper timing of when to to sell those products.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who simply wants to improve their life and finally start making the money they deserve.

Very nice book. The reading in chapter 6 was a little dense (business models) but I think the point is solid - there are only 7 basic types of business models; everything is just an elaboration or combination of those basic ideas. I like that. I'm a little OCD about the details of my business model, so it was nice to see if distilled down to such a simple concept.

I loved the discussion about how to find where the opportunity is before, rather than just iterating and expecting to find product-market fit. So true! Too many lean methodology drones out there just iterating only a flawed concept without asking the important questions. Kudos for for pointing it out!

There are other books out there on the startups, but none of them relate to me like this one. The book covers everything you need to know and the mindset you need to be in to set yourself apart from the competition.
