Présentation de l'éditeur

Thirty years after The Beatles split up, the music of Lennon, McCartney, Harrrison and Starkey lives on. What exactly were the magical ingredients of those legendary songs? Why are they still so influential for today's bands?

This ground-breaking book sets out to explore The Beatles' songwriting techniques in a clear and readable style. It is aimed not only at musicians but anyone who has ever enjoyed the work of one of the most productive and successful songwriting parterships of the 20th Century.

Author Dominic Pedler explores the chord sequences, melodies, harmonies, rhythms and structures of The Beatles' self-penned songs, while challenging readers to enhance their appreciation of the lyrics themselves with reference to the musical context.

Throughout the book the printed music and lyrics of The Beatles' songs appear alongside the text, illustrating the author's explanations.

The Songwriting Secrets Of The Beatles is an essential addition to Beatles literature - a new and perceptive analysis of both the music and the lyrics written and performed by what Paul McCartney still calls 'a really good, tight little band'.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 BEATLES MUSIC THEORY NIRVANA!!!!! 30 septembre 2008
Par Name Withheld - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Relié
As a musician, songwriter and Beatles fanatic having read easily 100 books on them, this book to me was the absolute holy grail!!

If you have ANY musical training at all and want to understand the Beatles' musical magic -- or use the Beatles music to learn about music theory -- this book delivers in spades! Unlike the more "professorial" Beatles music theory books (e.g Everett, Mellers) -- which sound more like doctoral dissertations and try to shoehorn Beatles into CLASSICAL-music analysis terminology and constructs, this book is written BY a rock musician FOR a rock musician and by a TRUE Beatles afficionado and connoisseur -- for both those of us who share his obsessions and those who don't. If you are a fellow rock or amateur musician who is Beatles-obsessed you will have found a TRUE kindred spirit -- and if you're not, you will learn about the more esoteric questions and quirks of Beatles music that have obsessed us connoiseurs since we first started playing guitar.

To wit: an entire CHAPTER devoted solely to that opening ringing chord of "A Hard Day's Night!"

In any case, you will gain a whole new appreciation of the Beatles' innovation, choices and techniques, not to mention an amazing bag of tricks to use if you are a songwriter.

There is an appendix that provides an unbelievably clear and concise overview and foundation of BASIC MUSIC THEORY for the absolute beginner. What's unique and great about that is that it uses BEATLES SONGS as examples of EVERY POINT. What better way to understand the basics? And then the rest of the book takes off from there.

For his sources, the author has studied -- and cites -- not only the standard Beatles releases, but bootlegs, and he even studied their finger positions on performance videos, interviewed top Beatles tribute bands to see what chord inversions they use, etc. etc. That's how thorough it is.

My ONLY caveat would be that if you have NO musical training at all and NO inclination to study a LITTLE music theory -- it might be too technical for you. But if you are even SLIGHTLY inclined toward those things -- even a guitar player who only knows a few chords -- and loves Beatles songs -- it will be an amazing opportunity to grow your understanding of music theory using Beatles' music as your school and a wonderfully clear-writing author as your teacher.

I spent a lot of money on this book and once I started reading it, I would gladly have spent almost any sum. It is PRECISELY the book I'd always longed for someone to write -- and even though it took 30 years -- someone finally did! If this type of material interests you -- don't hesitate for a nanosecond -- cough up whatever it costs. If my house were burning down and I could only save one book...yup...Songwriting Secrets of the Beatles.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 best beatle book by far 3 août 2009

This is the best Beatle book by far -- it is after all about the music, which in the end is what counts. The book is written for those with a modicum of music theory (hardly any really) -- most beatle music books are either too shallow or formidably technical. The author tried very, very hard to be clear, and it shows. Pedler wrote a shorter version of this as a series in Total Guitar, and I was pleasantly astonished when those brilliant articles turned into an even more brilliant book. I've read it four or five times, and my copy is littered with notes. No praise too high.

It is an incredible book. It is very hard to come by, but it is a jewel, it will repay you to have it if you have any interest in the Beatles and music.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I love it Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! 21 juin 2009

This is an amazing, exhaustively in-depth book on the music of The Beatles, and the theory behind it. I'm a self taught musician who wants to learn enough theory to know what I'm doing, and I'm also a huge fan of The Beatles so I figured this book would be a great start. It seems to me that this book presupposes a knowledge of theory, so I would recommend getting book on the basics of theory before diving into this book, because there's A LOT to wrap your head around. All in all I feel it's a great resource for Beatles fans and theory junkies alike.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Astounding "must read" for serious Beatle fans 5 avril 2012

What an astonishing book this is! Sure a lot of it was way above my head when the author talks about minute matters of musical theory-but the bits I CAN understand are engrossing.What's it all about? The author takes apart The Beatles music and looks for the unique factors that make the music so wonderful .(e.g The use of 4ths..the trademark 7ths...the 'unexpected turns the music makes..and much more) It shows once and for all the brilliance of the songwriting Beatles-and explains 'why'.
AND , finally , the definitive take on THAT chord-the opening chord of "A Hard Days Night".
The (in)famous "aeolian cadences" are also (finally!) explained.
Yes it's a very complex and detailed book-but endlessly fascinating and it keeps you reading chapter after chapter.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Learning Music Theory 16 août 2013

I've always thought music theory was too technical for me. This book is tough for someone without some theory background (like myself) but not impossible. I enjoy the Beatles music so that makes me more open to trying to understand the theory concepts and I am enjoying what I am learning. Basically, it is sound translated into math and numbers and if you approach it that way it makes sense. For me it comes down to reading a few pages at a time, listening to the songs, re-reading the pages again, etc. until I get it. But I have already picked up so much and my ears can now hear and understand what is going on. It is demanding and fulfilling. I've forged through about 15 to 20 pages a week but I understand everything I've read so far and I can now hear things in the music that I was unaware of before. It is fascinating and you will appreciate the Beatles so much more as you begin to understand how their songs were developed. This book is "heavy" and is for someone who is willing to put time and effort into the process but it is also giving me musical insight and understanding that just blows me away. It is some serious stuff!

In any key, the ii minor is the relative minor of the IV chord and, as a result, the potential for substitution between the two chords exists. "e;

If songwriters learn just one concept beyond the Three-Chord Trick from this book it should surely be the ii-V-I progression. "e;

The cadence is said to be Imperfect because of this hanging effect, which is typically reinforced by a melody that hits a brick wall either on the 5 itself or, as here, on the tense 2 of the key. "e;
