2.0 étoiles sur 5 A book of 3 parts 1 décembre 2011
Par Thomas Jensen - Norway - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
As the title says this novel seems to me like three different books.

The first book is about the young boy who looses his family, and the pscychological trauma that he suffers and the trials he has to live through on the streets. This part of the book is well written and engaging (though like the rest of the book it suffers from several cases of bad editing and spelling errors), and really got me into the book and its story. This part of the book is dark and have a serious tone.

The second book is about Maude's Marauders, a group of stereotypical adventurers, that seems directly drawn out of a bad roleplaying session. You have the grumpy dwarf, the witty and charming priest, the brusque and manly warrior woman and the extremely feminine elf wizard. This part of the books feels like it was written by a different author. The tone changes completely, and the plot is removed from the city and surroundings where we find the main protagonist. I'm betting the protagonist and this group will eventually hook up in a different book, but in this one the switch from Azerick's dark tale to this whimsical and supposedly witty story just felt jarring, and drew me out of the story.

The third part of the book is when Azerick finally is learning how to use magic. For this he has to go to The Academy. Now, if done right "the magic school" plot can be very fun and engaging, but here it is unfortunately bogged down in clichès. The new boy is of course bullied by the rich student and his cronies, he immediately bonds with his roommate, and he suffers from som kind of block that won't let him learn any more magic. But what truly brought me to a halt here was the distinction between wizard and sorcerer. It was directly drawn out of the D&D handbook. The rules that applies to wizards versus the sorcerer "class" were nearly identical. I will gladly suffer some similarities in fantasy books, but when I can recognize classes and even terms from D&D and other RPG's it totally breaks immersion.

This book started out great, but gradually became bogged down with clichès, and stereotypical characters. I really feel like the main protagonist have potential and I hope the author can realize it in further installements.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Standard but thoroughly enjoyable fare 19 novembre 2011

This is your standard coming-of-age fantasy story about a young boy growing into his power. The author doesn't introduce anything new or original here, but that does not make the story any less enjoyable. These kinds of books are a dime a dozen, but this one does it right. With the exceptions of a few typos and grammatical errors, I found this book to be a tight, well-written book that I devoured in one day and one that left me on the hook for the next book, which I hope is coming soon.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 it only gets better 21 février 2012

so all the grievances are true, this does start as your standard-run of the mill boy-to-man hero adventure. the book does also read as what seems to be three almost seperate stories at times. All of that said the book is still an ok read, not great mind you, but definately enjoyable. Not to mention the author seems to find his balance through out the subsquent books which i think are way better. If i had to dp it again, i would still buy this book just so i would have an understanding of what is happening in latter books in the series; for some it will be like eating their vegtables before they can have some icecream, for me it was more like eating my mashed potatoes...not bad, but certainly not pizza.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Compelling character, insulting dialogue 23 août 2012
Par paul - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
I will join the ranks of those who review without finishing. I didn't get very far. I didn't even get to the editing problems brought up by other reviews. The opening hook with the merchant captain is interesting, but he was the only character in the first chapter. The rest were cliches at best, but most were simply plot devices with names.

Characters discuss things they already know for the benefit of the reader. A lot. Sometimes to be repeated a few pages later with other characters in case the reader isn't taking adequate notes. Bad dialogue written as a vehicle for exposition is a turn off for me.

I cut out most of this review as it came across much harsher than I intended. In short, I felt like a guy cornered at a gaming convention being told about someone's favorite campaign history. I hate to counter cliche with quasi-cliche, but "Show, don't tell." Having a character give me a monologue disguised as dialogue with another character doesn't count. The story seemed very interesting, but I couldn't bring myself to find out for sure. If this were an early draft, I'd have been interested in the final, polished work. But, since this is the final product, I may just wait for the television series.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Really good story that falls off at the end. 9 août 2012

I started out really enjoying the book. It was well written and made me keep wanting more. I kept thinking "one more chapter then I got stuff to do". Then I'd knock out four more chapters. Really very well written.

Then I got to the final few chapters and the writer just went off the rails. He went completely away from the main character and started following a totally different band of people on this D&D type quest. These characters were silly and their adventures were ridiculous! Yet they finished the book with not another peep from the main character those last few chapters! Outrageous!

A perfectly awesome story reduced to rubble for no good reason I can fathom. It was like the author got sick of writing and decided &%$# it! And just started throwing crap against the wall to see what would stick. Hell, even his editing fell off as there were numerous typos.

Really very disappointing. Even more so because at the end, he wrote some stuff about how a lot of readers had a beef with exactly what I am talking about and he seemed to be justifying the terrible job at the end saying how it will tie in with the rest of the trilogy! I thought that was really weak. The bottom line is he did a terrible job of making the tie in make sense...hell, it was almost like a totally different story. I thought it was until they were sent on the quest that did tie it in to the main story.

So after ripping the book and the author you're wondering why I gave it three stars instead of one. The simple fact is the first 16 chapters rocked and rolled. I mean the writer was in the zone as far as I was concerned. Really, my only complaint was that there was no smoking hot heroine, whom I kept expecting to show up but one never did. Other than that, really excellent writing the first 75% of the book, so I give it three stars.

But damn, I'm awfully reluctant to purchase the other two books because of that final 25 percent.
