Revue de presse

"Author Alejandro de Quesada tackles a complicated, convoluted subject – and superbly shoehorns contents into just 48 pages." - David L. Veres, www.cybermodeler.com

"The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 (1) Nationalist Forces delivers a lot of information about a significant event in the history of 20th Century warfare within its modest 48-pages. This book is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the Spanish Civil War, its causes and the individuals who made up the Nationalist’s coalition." --Roger A Rasor, IPMS/USA

"This book concentrates on the Nationalist forces and while it is typically a uniforms and equipment book, does a nice job of condensing the conflict into the various smaller campaigns. It also covers all the different groups and militias that came together to help ensure the Nationalist victory over the Republican forces. It is a great book on the subject and one that enthusiasts of the period should not miss." -- Scott Van Aken, www.modelingmadness.com

Présentation de l'éditeur

The Spanish Civil War, 1936-39, was the curtain-raiser to World War II, and the major international event of the 1930s. It was the first great clash of 20th-century ideologies, between the rebel Nationalist army led by General Franco (right-wing, and aided by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy), and the Republican army of the government (left-wing, and aided by the Communist Soviet Union and many volunteers from liberal democracies). Three years of widespread campaigns involved the most modern weapons available (submachine guns, mortars, artillery, tanks, and combat aircraft operating in direct support of ground forces). The war was fought ruthlessly by both sides, and when the Nationalists secured victory they installed a dictatorship that lasted until November 1975 - the last such regime in Western Europe.

The Nationalist forces were varied in origin and appearance. Their spearhead was provided by the colonial army brought over from Spanish Morocco - the Spanish Foreign Legion, and Spanish-led Moroccan native regiments. Apart from sympathizers within the pre-war regular army, troops raised in Spain reflected a number of distinct regional traditions and political militias, and included both internal security units and foreign volunteer contingents. Weapons and equipment came from a wide variety of Spanish and foreign sources. Featuring specially commissioned full-color artwork, this first part of a two-part study depicts the fighting men of the Nationalist forces that strove to take control of Spain alongside their German and Italian allies.

The conflict before World War II... 24 mai 2014
Par HMS Warspite - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
The civil war that broke in Spain in 1936 left thousands dead and the dictator General Francisco Franco in charge until his death in 1975. Outside Spain, it is perhaps remembered most as a proving ground of the weapons of war for the Soviet Union and for its future Fascist opponents Germany and Italy. The factions inside Spain defy easy description, a key point made by author Alejandro de Quesada in this new Osprey men-at-Arms Series book "The Spanish Civil War 1936-39 (1)".

The author's extended introduction to the conflict sets the stage for his narrative of the Nationalist Forces who fought under Franco. Their uniforms and weapons were as diverse as the sources of the fighting men, who came from the Spanish Peninsular Army, various militias, foreign troops, and perhaps most famously, Spain's Army of Africa and its Foreign Legion. De Quesada adroitly mixes a discussion of the fighting with the role of the Nationalist units. Uniforms and equipment came from military arsenals in Spain and from outside sources such as German and Italy, and even equipment captured from opposition Republican units. There is an excellent selections of photographs, maps, and color illustrations, in far more detail than the reader might expect from a book less than fifty pages long. The author avoids judgments about the war in favor of the topic at hand. A second volume on the Republican forces is due next. Recommended as a good introduction to the topic.

Franco's legions 18 novembre 2014

While there are some general books on the Spanish Civil War and even more books on the Republicans (not to mention the International Brigades) there are few on the Nationalist forces. This book looks at the various units which fought for the Nationalists, from their own "international" contingents to the regular army to colonial troops to the political militias. The book does an excellent job of addressing the role these units played and how they were equipped. Excellent artwork and photographs!

EXCELLENT...WITH ONE MINOR FLAW! 3 avril 2015

I just received both Osprey books regarding the forces which fought on opposing sides in the Spanish Civil War. Being the son of Spaniards (first generation "American", which means nothing, really--I'm Spanish first lolol!) and most of my family being staunch republicans at the outbreak of the civil war on 18 July 1936, these books were outstanding in every way shape or form. Focusing on THIS particular volume, the Nationalist forces, the author did an outstanding job in meticulously showcasing the principal officers and men, from the Army of Africa right down to the dreaded Guardia Civil (Civil Guard) of which most of them were staunchly loyal to Francisco Franco Bahamonde, the future dictator of Spain. Quesada describes the chronlogy, from events leading up to hostilities, right to the details on weaponry, uniforms and fighting tactics of all Nationalist forces. ONLY ONE SMALL BONE TO PICK, Senor Quesada, con todo respeto (with all due respect). There is an illustration of a trooper representing the former Republican assault guards, this one wearing a reglimentary half moon cap instead of the ubitiquous visored hat ordinarily used since the foundation of this urban paramilitary police force by the Republic in 1932; according to sources such as well-renowned author Antony Beevor and genreal literary historical sources in Spain proper, the Assault Guard force numbered 18,000 men at the outbreak of the civil war. A good 93% remained LOYAL to the Republic, 7% joining the Nationalists. That is only 1,260 men of the latter. Why even bother including a plate of the "Guardias"? In the Republican volume, on the other hand, the illustration is well justified. I also found it a bit offensive a "Guard of the Republic" being showcased on the NATIONALIST (Fascist) side!! After all, it was THEY who helped my great grandfather, a Republican political functionary, flee Spain at the outbreak of hostilities. . Had it been the Civil Guards, he would've been dead, like my grandfather on my father's side who was shot by Falangists while serving as governor of the province of Lugo in Galicia on the 20th of July 1936. Forgive me, fellow readers, for getting a little personal, but this war is still discussed even today across restaurants and cafes all over Spain. I know. I visit friends and family EVERY SUMMER! This is one topic that almost always surfaces in every tabletop discussion! Anyhow, inspite of my four-star rating in regards to this flaw however, an impeccable work of a book! :-) Well done!!
