Revue de presse

"As gripping and gruesome as fans have come to expect . . . Delaney has a spellbinding gift" (Suzi Feay, Financial Times)

Présentation de l'éditeur

'He's the seventh son of a seventh son. His name is Thomas J. Ward and he's my gift to the County. When he's old enough we'll send you word. Train him well. He'll be the best apprentice you've ever had and he'll also be your last.'

These were the words of Tom's Mam to the county Spook some years ago. As Tom, the Spook and their allies prepare to battle with the Fiend on a huge scale, to finally enact their revenge, it now remains to be seen whether Mam's declaration will come true.

I loved Books #1-12 in this series and the 2 extras. And I was so looking forward to reading the final book. But now I'm left somewhat disappointed.

-----
SPOILER ALERT
-----

The build up to this book suggested that this would be an epic tale of courage and sacrifice. But this book felt more like a 'bait & switch'. Not only does the ending play out differently from what we were led to believe, there isn't a proper ending at all as this book leads straight into a new story arc. And I am thinking, please, please don't let this series go the RE Feist 'Krondor' route of an endlessly repeating cycles of epic wars with ultimate evil enemies.

By the end of the story, Tom is tired of epic adventures and wants to leave it to others to save the world the next time. While this is understandable human, this suggests that he is not yet the man that he thinks he is, since he is partly responsible for this latest threat. So will the new series show him growing up a little more? For a coming-of-age story spanning 15 books, it would be surprising if we have too wait til the next series for him to grow up.

Alice's fall from grace is not explained in this book beyond the 'she looked into his eyes and met her (evil) soul mate'. I'm hoping that the next books will reveal a brilliant reason for what she is doing. She does not behave like an infatuated woman. We are told that she has decided that the Fiend should live for the 'greater good', but there's no discussion about his previous threats of eternal torture for Tom and Alice. So the change in allegiance reads like deus ex machina.

Grimalkin rises to the occasion as the ultimate anti-hero. I loved her story and the Spook's. The other supporting characters had a good turn too - Tom's brother, James; Mab Mouldheel; the boggart.

Overall, this is not a bad story, but it falls below the standards of the earlier books.

I have been chomping at the bit to get my hands on this book, cursing the time as it passed yesterday ... oh, sooooooo slowly - at a rate of at least twice slower than normal speed ... then finally - (FINALLY): it appeared in my kindle browser! At last, time to finally get down to business ...

I want to pause here to admit I'm an adult, with a son who is now an adult in turn, and that I am closer to 50 than I care to admit publically. I also live in the southwestern United States, so getting these books at the UK release dates is not easy (but waiting has never been an option either).

No plot spoliers here - I'm not telling. I won't give a book report on this story as some do. Why? You're going to read it - that would be ridiculous and pointless. But what I will say is there are some OS moments in the book, and Delaney has killed off some key player's we have grown to know well - some beloved, some of them son-of-a-b*tches, but all "familiars" (no pun intended) nonetheless. Tears will fall, frustration will rage, and betrayal is rife. Delaney's got nerve - which makes him an especially great yarn spinner and master at his craft - and his stories so much fun to read!

The good news: there will be a spin-off series on the horizon [hurray]! Granted, although I was impatient to know how this story eventually panned out, I was also a bit down about the end of this series too (vanishing [POOF!] - taking with it familiar and beloved characters, not to mention a totally unique and wonderfully magical literary universe, into the Never ... forever more) as I have been reading it with my son since 2007, when he was in 7th grade. However, truth be told, in order to neatly wrap up everything before closure this last book would have had to have been possibly 1,000 pages or more - and to leave out important events at a series finale is NOT the Delaney way! True, a lot is left hanging - literally flapping out there in the wind like wet laundry on a clothes line - ripe for continuation of the tale, but left undone? No way, mam/sir! We get to look forward to a BRAND NEW series to continue on the tale. YAY! :)

Perhaps I missed it, but even after reading the sneak preview (which I believe is already finished [?¿?] unless I misinterpreted) I don't know the name of the new series. Hmmm ... coincidence? I don't think so ...

If you are a die-hard Spook's Tales (or Last Apprentice) fan, you will be highly satisfied! Now - don't you have something you should be doing?! GO READ!!! And remember to thank Mr. Delaney properly. Love ya Joseph!

:)

In the last of the Wardstone Chronicles, Tom grows up. Without revealing too much, I would say that the ending was not quite what I wanted, but it has left a loophole for the next series when Tom becomes a Spook himself. Everything came together in a satisfactory way and I give it 5 stars as I did for all the preceding books. Just a hint: read Slither's tale before you start on the new Tom Ward series!

Despite being the 13th installment in the series, this book retains the pace, creativity and quality of the 1st- a rare occurrence in the world of literature. Joseph Delaney has managed to avoid 'sequel syndrome'.
