Revue de presse

"This marvelous book [is] a perfect amalgam of precisely the kind of juicy details and vivid descriptions of rare and idiosyncratic instruments that guitar freaks crave and the compelling stories of the people whose lives have become enmeshed with these six- (and four- and eight- and twelve-) string masterpieces. On top of that, it’s a great read. Deke Dickerson’s love for guitars and his genius for finding some of the rarest birds in the musical aviary is matched by his not inconsiderable writing chops. The man knows how to tell a great story." — from the foreword by Jonathan Kellerman

“(Deke Dickerson is)  a gifted musician, writer, archivist and sleuth – clearly a hillbilly renaissance man – and knows how to spin an engaging yarn. The Strat in the Attic is a well written, high quality, full color book that will engage any active or armchair fan of electric guitars.” - All Music Books.com

Présentation de l'éditeur

Guitar sleuth and music-history detective Deke Dickerson tells the true tales of 50 thrilling rare guitar finds that will make guitarists green with envy. A golden Fender Stratocaster hidden away in an attic for 30 years. A sunburst Gibson Les Paul worth $100,000. Jimi Hendrix’s Strat burned by the guitarist during a concert—and then mysteriously lost for decades. The mint Fender Broadcaster forgotten under a bed in a neighbor’s house. The 1960s Rickenbacker bought for $50 at a garage sale!

These days, classic vintage guitars can bring Ferrari and Porsche prices. Baby boomers who wish they’d been rock ’n’ roll stars have shot the market into the stratosphere for classic models. As with automobiles, finding that classic guitar stashed away beneath a bed, in a closet, hidden away in an attic, or in the dusty corner of a guitar shop is the Holy Grail.

I'm not especially big on guitar books -- I've got a stack of 'em, I'll admit right now, but I sure as hell don't keep 'em out where people'll see 'em -- but this baby's an absolute wonder in every way. Much like the esteemed Deke Dickerson himself, this has oodles for everybody: gorgeous color pix for the guitar-porn dork, extensive technical insight for the techie dweeb, and great, untold behind-the-scenes performer stories for the drooling R&R/R&B/C&W fan. I fit into all three of those categories to varying extents, making this an absolute trifecta of excellence. An incredible bargain even above the list, and its current Amazon price is a steal on the Federal level. Amazing job, Deke, and hope there's more to come!

Deke Dickerson's "The Strat in the Attic" may be the single best guitar book in the history of all guitar books. Cool stories about finding cool guitars...plus a gigantic dose of guitar and music history. Best of all, Deke puts the people up front and center. The guys who made 'em, the guys who played 'em. Close to fifty unique stories, and neither too short nor too long. Just enough for the average guitar player's attention span. Yeah, you can find books that go into excruciating detail, or books that have information on every model ever made, but nowhere are you going to find this level of excitement, fun, and general awesomeness. You will be entertained, in awe, and you just might learn something. Author of Gibson Amplifiers 1933-2008: 75 Years of the Gold Tone (Book & CD-ROM)

I first saw Deke Dickerson in Green Bay, WI, slagging away at bar in a casino that had the stage right behind the backbar...you could sit on your ass at the bar, play the slots, drink and watch the band. Deke and his band were playing there, and a few yards away in the big hall was Brian Setzer's Orchestra doing their Xmas show.

Well, the treat of the evening wasn't Setzer, though his show was stunning and the musicianship first class. The treat was Deke and his band...masters of showmanship, entertainment, hillbilly/rockabilly hospitality and just plain down-to-earth fun.

I've been a huge fan ever since, and Mr. Dickerson has never disappointed. He's also one of the most affable, down to earth, ego-less performers you'll ever come across.

I received this book from my loving wife, autographed by Deke himself. Being a bit of a guitar geek myself, I absolutely loved all of the stories he shares in this book. One reviewer was critical in that he said that Deke 'manages to put himself in every story'. Well, this book IS his story, and he WAS in every one of them, in one way or another. There's no fabrication here, folks. This isn't a 'me me me' account. For one thing, Deke Dickerson literally has no ego. For another, his life has pretty much been a search for the holy grail of guitars, that grail being plural, not singular. His enthusiasm, love and devotion for the historic guitars and men who were formative in the development of electric guitars and sounds is plainly evident in each lovingly crafted story.

This book is a must own for any lover of guitars, especially for lovers of old, historic guitars. You can't go wrong with this one, folks. This is the one you leave out on the endtable. :D
