I picked up this book because I was hoping that it would provide some insights and tools that I could share with my middle school students; and I had hopes that it might even be something I could propose as a text for some of our leadership classes. Having no experience with the previous edition of The Student Leadership Challenge, I expected to find some vignettes that my students might relate to, as well as some actual challenges--tasks students might be given to help them develop their leadership abilities.

This book, while providing quite a number of examples and checklists about what might make someone a successful leader, did not feel like it would inspire students (particularly middle school students) to want to be leaders, much less show them how to find those skills within themselves. There are some tips that are useful, but they're buried in a text which, itself, seems to lack inspiration. There were, quite literally, only a few of pages that I thought were useful--one which details how to ask oneself purposeful reflection questions on a daily basis, and one which advises how to get useful feedback, and one which lists ways to recognize contributions made by others. None of the lists contain new, much less revolutionary ideas, but they are fairly concise reference points.

I would go so far as to say that this book is not for students who want to become leaders, but for students who already are. The text assumes that these student leaders already have agendas (or at least strong ideas) that they want to advance, but it doesn't provide any help in helping them to recognize their own strengths. What's more, the writing is so dry, I think that most students would find the text tedious and dull.

If anything, I think this text would be more beneficial to people studying management and attempting to develop business skills than it is to students in the classroom. I don't think that kids should be generally taught by video, but in this case, I think that there are a few really great TEDtalks out there that could provide much richer challenges and insights to today's youth.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Powerful Book On Leadership 1 avril 2014
Par Dad of Divas - Publié sur Amazon.com
I work with students on a daily basis and am always looking to be able to make leadership more tangible and easier to understand and this book does just that. I truly appreciated how practical this book was and how many great examples are quoted as it makes the book even more valuable in my perspective.

This book does a remarkable job at helping any young adult become more knowledgeable about leadership in general, as well as building the social skills needed to command and lead teams into the future.

By building these skills in students early, they have the ability to be able to set themselves apart from other classmates and soon-to-be graduates, as this is completely necessary in today's society!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Outstanding new edition of The Leadership Challenge for students. 22 avril 2014

The Leadership Challenge was first published twenty-seven years ago. Since that time it has become required reading for managers and students -- and for good reason. First, the book is highly readable. Kouzes and Posner write for real managers with serious leadership problems. They include many true stories of managers facing difficult challenges. In the new 2014 edition of The Student Leadership Challenge Kouzes and Posner start each chapter with a story of a student facing a real leadership challenge and then go on to apply the tried and true principles of leadership that have made their books famous and well respected.

Like The Leadership Challenge, the student version is filled with good ideas and suggestions for taking a leadership role in any organization. Challenging the Process, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Enabling Others to Act, Modeling the Way, and Encouraging the Heart provide a game plan for student leaders to use to positively influence the behavior of others.

Starting with the second chapter, The Student Leadership Challenge is filled with suggestions for application. Leadership is a practice and any student interested in becoming a leader must work each day at building leadership skills. Kouzes and Posner ask students to 1. Pay attention, really pay attention to what is going on in their organization. 2. Take risks that separate them from students who sit back and wait for something good to happen. 3. Seek feedback. As Ken Blanchard says, "Feedback is the breakfast of champions." 4. Accept responsibility, something often difficult for students to do.

Kouzes and Posner do not write like academics. They are popularizers, and good ones. Many of their ideas have stood the test of time and are worth learning and applying.

I have used several of the books of Kouzes and Posner in our Team Leadership course at our university and students almost unanimously attest to their value. The foundation of the Team Leadership course is The Klein Group Instrument. As Robert Klein says, “The KGI is a comprehensive 4-in-1 assessment instrument that can be taken by individuals or entire teams. Individuals receive a detailed report indicating their strengths and challenges in four domains (leadership, negotiation, task focus, and interpersonal focus), further subdivided into nine subscales. Teams receive an aggregate score on the same scales and subscales, with additional feedback on the variation in scores of its members. Individual reports provide targeted feedback and suggested actions for improvement. Group reports include both specific, prioritized group process improvement suggestions and a plan for implementing them. A combination of personal profiles plus the group's profile for an entire team gives members a deeper appreciation for the varied roles and functions essential to true teamwork, with actionable insights about productive next-steps provided for both group and members. The KGI is unique to team-focused assessments, targeting both outcomes (task analysis, planning, and execution) and process (conflict resolution, negotiation, and emotions).”

Students, faculty, and interested readers of this review are well advised to go to the Internet and learn about this new and effective instrument (KGI) which I think is an excellent complement to the 2nd edition of Kouzes and Posner leadership book for students. Both are highly recommended.

The access code "provided" with the book was invalid upon arrival which is very disappointing since it came out of a brand new book.

The second edition of "The Student Leadership Challenge" by James Kouzes and Barry Posner is an excellent resource for students who want to develop their abilities to lead. Actually, anyone wanting to lead can benefit from reading this book. The authors explain in clear, accessible language the five practices for becoming an exemplary leader. Each chapter ends with specific actions students may take to develop their skills as leaders. Stories of student leaders from around the world illustrate the leadership behaviors in practice. These stories also encourage students reading the book that they too can be leaders. This book would be excellent for leadership courses, student leadership development programs, or as a resource for students holding lead roles on or off campus. New copies of the book include an access code for the Student Leadership Practices Inventory. A practical and inspiring book from two well-respected experts in leadership development.
