5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Powerful Book On Leadership 1 avril 2014

I work with students on a daily basis and am always looking to be able to make leadership more tangible and easier to understand and this book does just that. I truly appreciated how practical this book was and how many great examples are quoted as it makes the book even more valuable in my perspective.

This book does a remarkable job at helping any young adult become more knowledgeable about leadership in general, as well as building the social skills needed to command and lead teams into the future.

By building these skills in students early, they have the ability to be able to set themselves apart from other classmates and soon-to-be graduates, as this is completely necessary in today's society!

I really like how this is written directly to the young leaders it is designed for. Very well organized to help inspire and create the next generation of leaders.
At my children's school, they have a leadership group. It is made up of students that want to improve the school community and develop their own leadership experience. I have given this book to the teacher in charge of that group. I think it will prove helpful to the instructor and the students who read it.

The New Yorker cartoon-a-day calendar on my desk recently welcomed me to graduation season with this chuckle from the valedictorian's commencement speech: "My fellow-graduates, today we leave behind the trappings of youth, step boldly onto the road of life, and move back in with our parents."

To help your favorite graduates avoid the boomerang kids phenomena (read the New York Times article, June 20, "It's Official: The Boomerang Kids Won't Leave"), give them the new student assessment from leadership gurus James Kouzes and Barry Posner. The new Student Leadership Practices Inventory® is included in the 2014 second edition of The Student Leadership Challenge: Five Practices for Becoming an Exemplary Leader.

Really? An online leadership assessment for high school and college students might help your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, volunteers and part-time staff become leaders? It might--and your personal interest will be appreciated.

Here's the context and the promise from The Leadership Challenge:

"The Student Leadership Practices Inventory® (Student LPI®) is the cornerstone of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership model. Created by leadership educators James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, this powerful leadership development model approaches leadership as a measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviors, because everyone can be a leader--whether in a designated leadership role or not."

The authors say the Student LPI offers young leaders a method for assessing leadership skills by "measuring the frequency with which you engage in 30 behaviors that research shows lead to the best leadership outcomes."

The pioneering leadership work of Kouzes and Posner ("liberate the leader within") began in 1982 and the first edition of The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations was published in 1987, with this subtitle: "How to Get Extraordinary Things Done in Organizations." Today, it has sold more than two million copies worldwide and is available in more than 22 languages.

While I have four resources from The Leadership Challenge on my bookshelves, including the first edition, this is my first review--clearly an omission. Here are the five practices:
* Practice 1: Model the Way
* Practice 2: Inspire a Shared Vision
* Practice 3: Challenge the Process
* Practice 4: Enable Others to Act
* Practice 5: Encourage the Heart

The student book, and all the resources, have numerous PowerPoint-worthy zingers. One of my favorite poke-in-the-ribs for board members and leaders is this from Kouzes and Posner:

"Leaders must challenge the process because
systems will unconsciously conspire
to maintain the status quo and prevent change."

In addition to the five foundational practices, the authors describe 10 commitments, including:
* Commitment #1: Clarify Values
* Commitment #2: Set the Example
* Commitment #5: Search for Opportunities
* Commitment #10: Celebrate the Values and the Victories

The materials will deliver a year's worth of content for leadership enrichment segments in your staff meetings. And if you have a heart to coach and mentor young leaders, the book and the inventory deliver a substantive add-water-and-stir outline--without compromising content for cuteness.

Insights:
* "Everyone has the capacity to lead whether or not they are in a formal position of authority or even part of an organized group."
* "It's about knowing your values and those of the people around you and taking the steps, however small, to make what you do every day demonstrate that you live by those values."

And speaking of small steps, here are the first few lines of the introduction to The Leadership Challenge Workbook:

"When we interviewed Don Bennett for our book, he said something that we've never forgotten. Don is the first amputee to climb Mt. Rainer. That's 14,410 feet on one leg and two crutches.
"`How did you make it to the top?' we asked Don.
"'One hop at a time,' was his instant reply.
"One hop at a time. One hop at a time. One hop at a time."

So back to the young leaders on your radar. After completing The Student Leadership Practices Inventory® online, they will receive an impressive 17-page personalized report which includes the "Leadership Behaviors Ranking" of their most frequent to least frequent leadership behaviors.

For this review, I channeled my thoughts back to my high school leadership days and completed the online inventory. I was affirmed by my most frequent leadership behaviors, but--yikes--my leadership deficiencies in the 1960s tended to be those still lurking in my dysfunctional behavior buckets today. There's still work to do--as if the book, What Got You Here Won't Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful, wasn't reminder enough.

I picked up this book because I was hoping that it would provide some insights and tools that I could share with my middle school students; and I had hopes that it might even be something I could propose as a text for some of our leadership classes. Having no experience with the previous edition of The Student Leadership Challenge, I expected to find some vignettes that my students might relate to, as well as some actual challenges--tasks students might be given to help them develop their leadership abilities.

This book, while providing quite a number of examples and checklists about what might make someone a successful leader, did not feel like it would inspire students (particularly middle school students) to want to be leaders, much less show them how to find those skills within themselves. There are some tips that are useful, but they're buried in a text which, itself, seems to lack inspiration. There were, quite literally, only a few of pages that I thought were useful--one which details how to ask oneself purposeful reflection questions on a daily basis, and one which advises how to get useful feedback, and one which lists ways to recognize contributions made by others. None of the lists contain new, much less revolutionary ideas, but they are fairly concise reference points.

I would go so far as to say that this book is not for students who want to become leaders, but for students who already are. The text assumes that these student leaders already have agendas (or at least strong ideas) that they want to advance, but it doesn't provide any help in helping them to recognize their own strengths. What's more, the writing is so dry, I think that most students would find the text tedious and dull.

If anything, I think this text would be more beneficial to people studying management and attempting to develop business skills than it is to students in the classroom. I don't think that kids should be generally taught by video, but in this case, I think that there are a few really great TEDtalks out there that could provide much richer challenges and insights to today's youth.

Quick Thoughts

◊ This book is a spinoff from the authors' series of The Leadership Challenge. (A book so valid in its material that it was our assigned textbooks for my Managerial Behaviors class at Portland State University)

◊ The book follows five trains of thought; Model the way, Inspire a shared vision, Challenge the process, Enable others to act, and Encourage the heart.

◊ This book really delves into a lot of useful qualities, traits, and key principles that are needed from today's leaders.

Final say
I've said this time and time again, most people assume leadership with being a manager or a boss. However, a leader is someone who is simply an individual who is highly admired, respected, and sought after in their community, group, or industry. This book, without any doubt, is for everyone. I wouldn't hesitate a second for anyone to get this book and follow the steps and perspectives outline in this text.
