5.0 étoiles sur 5 Authentic and Beautiful 25 mars 2014
Par Cookie - Publié sur Amazon.com
The best thing about Jolene's characters is there authenticity. Kate is seventeen. Aidan is nineteen. And they act like 17 and 19 year olds. Exactly.

Kate deals with diabetes, as said in the blurb, but she doesn't really deal with it. She ignores it...pretends it doesn't exist and doesn't take it seriously. It's sad and frustrating to read, but it's something I could 100% relate to. When something happens in our lives that is so devastating, or it changes the course of our futures, and it's something we refuse to accept, our minds won't allow us to see the severity of the situation. It happens all the time. Denial is a stage of grief, and who knows how long people stay in that stage. For Kate, she doesn't want to live with her disease. She doesn't want to deal with it forever. Her brain refuses to accept this is how life will be for her now. And I get it. I get HER. I want it not to be her life either. I wish ignoring things would make things go away. But they don't, and this book is a hard dose of reality with that.

Aidan's life changes as well, not only very physically, but the emotional toll war has on a soldier I can't even comprehend. These two connected with each other far deeper than either of them realized. They both said it was on the surface...attraction, distraction... but what Jolene has done so amazingly well is sneak in the underlining chemistry, the deep feelings that even the characters don't realize is happening until it hits them hard. And the message in not only the love story but in the character development itself whispers to the reader, "Life is hard, but how you handle it either makes it harder or easier."

The things these characters deal with are forever things. They won't go away if they're ignored. And the strength from the two young characters, the arc of their story, was beautifully written. Brought to light things in my own life, and when a book can do that for me, I find that a very humbling gift.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Quick Summer Romance Read 21 août 2014

I read this recently on a cross country plane trip while utilizing the new Kindle Unlimited. This is a great, quick read for anyone who loves romance stories. The characters are believable and even though my teens years are well behind me, I could relate to aspects of each character. There is a sex scene, should that not fit well with your preferences, however it is not graphic like adult romance novels tend to be.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 The Summer (Not Really) I Found You 5 mars 2014

I hate to admit it but I had a really hard time with this one. It left me feeling confused and underwhelmed. While it had a lot of potential, The Summer I Found You has too many flaws to be an enjoyable read.

One of the aspects that bothered me the most about this novel is the title. That sounds crazy, right? But if you are going to use the word “summer” in the title, you might want to make sure the story is actually set in the summer! As far as I could tell, The Summer I Found You takes place during the school year. I’m not sure where the title came from or why it wasn’t changed prior to publication. It is very misleading and kind of strange. Also, while I think the cover is pretty, I think it doesn't represent the novel very well.

While I’m aware that I received a galley of this title so I should be very lenient on grammar/spelling, I felt like I was reading the first draft of a novel instead of one close to publication. Most sentences weren’t structured very well and that alone made my reading experience less than stellar. I also had an issue with the way the male character’s name was spelled throughout the novel. It kept changing from Aiden to Aidan and back again. As a reader, it confused me. As a reviewer, it made me kind of angry. I feel like something this huge shouldn’t be a problem by the time ARCs are being distributed to reviewers.

As far as the relationship goes, I felt like Aidan (or Aiden...who knows?) and Kate were two hormonal teenagers and their initial connection was based on that alone. Their chemistry didn't develop the way I wanted to it and everything felt rushed. I understand that they were each other's "escape" but I couldn't get over the fact that they were both too immature to care deeply about someone else.

It wasn't all bad, though. I love that the characters were struggling with issues we don't usually read about in YA/NA. I’m glad that Jolene Perry chose to write about a young girl with diabetes and a nineteen year disabled old veteran. I think it could've been better, perhaps more emotionally appealing, but I appreciate the effort to bring awareness to these issues.

Would I recommend this novel? Honestly, I’m not sure. While it is being marketed as a New Adult novel (which I didn’t know until recently), I feel like it won’t find a lot of success that way. The characters are not mature enough and the story is not unique enough to appeal to fans of NA. My final verdict is that The Summer I Found You isn't good enough to shine among all of the new titles being released this year and, unless you are interested in a quick and average read, you should skip this one.

Note: An eARC of this title was provided to me through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 It wasn't even in the summer.... 11 mars 2014

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

2.5 stars!

This is my first negative review, and I absolutely hate to write is, since I understand writing is such an intimate and personal process. Plus, I was so excited to read this one.

This book had lots of promise, but I feel like it just fell short. For one, I had trouble getting through all of the errors in the text and weird sentence structures. I can overlook some, since I know we are only human, but this was pushing it. I struggled with this throughout the whole book, and I think that had a lot to do with my lack of enjoyment.

Starting off, I actually really liked the characters and their interactions. I actually wish they had been older, due to the sensitive issues they were dealing with. It would’ve made it more interesting I think. As the story progressed though, I just felt like something was off. I’ve been putting this review off for a while now, trying to figure out what the main issue was, but I’ve had no luck so far.

Anyway, with some more editing and reworking of the plot in some places, I think this could be a great book. It was already good; it just seems like it needs to have some serious help with all of the little things that make a story great.

Given the chance, I would like to read this again once it had some work done.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 enjoyed the chemistry between the lead characters 3 mars 2014
Par MS - Publié sur Amazon.com
Kate’s boyfriend broke up with her and she’s still longing for him. She also has to deal with a recent diagnosis of diabetes, and her family is upset with her because she’s not taking it seriously. Her sugar levels lead to hospitalizations. Aidan was a soldier in Afghanistan where he witnessed an explosion, the death of a friend, and the loss of one of his arms. He’s living with relatives and barely goes out, but he’s slowly coming out of his shell with Kate.

Aidan is two years older, he feels self-conscious about his arm, and what happened to him in the military is fresh, raw, and painful. Kate is keeping things from him, puts her foot in her mouth all the time when she’s around him, and has her ex-boyfriend on her mind. But the attraction between the two is undeniable.

Although there are heavy issues, this is a fast read that could be both YA and NA because of the characters’ age difference. I enjoyed the chemistry between Kate and Aidan and would love to read more from this author. I read the book via NetGalley, courtesy of the publisher.
