4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good historical romance collection 1 septembre 2013

I love to get a collection,.especially as a freebie, so thanks to the author and Amazon for this very nice mix by Dorothy McFalls. In all of the stories, the writing was good, there were no pesky editing problems, the characters were well developed and interesting, the dialogue was good and the plot was engaging.

The first story, The Marriage List, I would characterize as a sweet romance. The hero, a dashing viscount wounded in the war against Napoleon, decides he's challenged death enough and needs to marry and begin his family. Unfortunately, the woman he can't seem to get off his mind doesn't meet any of the carefully listed criteria he decided to use when choosing a wife.
Heat factor mild.

Lady Iona's Rebellion brings back two of the supporting characters from the first book to give them their own romance. This book is a spicier regency romance with a Rake leading an innocent Duke's daughter down the path of temptation. Or it the other way around?
Heat factor moderate.

In Taken by Moonlight, the author takes us into the paranormal world with a romance between Lady Amelia, who was stolen from her dead werewolf parent's arms and raised as the daughter of an Earl. She knows nothing about werewolves or how they're being hunted. But one member of the pack has a vision that if this lost child is returned, the hunting will decrease and the pack will increase. The pack turns to Viscount Dimitri, a lone wolf who already has a place in London society to plan her retrieval. Unfortunately, Dimitri realizes that she's his mate and he can't just turn her over to the pack Alpha. He's going to have to not only fight his Alpha for her, but rejoin the pack and all it's politics and problems. No one ever said that the course of true love ran smoothly.
Heat factor moderate.

The last book in this quartet is entitled The Nude. It refers to a painting that went on display in the Museum of London along with many others from an artist known only as Dionysus. The few who deal with the artist, getting his works to the dealers, etc...are sworn to secrecy about his identity. Lady Elsbeth, the recently out of mourning Dowager Countess of Redgrave, has never met the artist, doesn't know who he is, although her late husband tried to give her some paintings by Dionysus during their courtship and pretend that he had painted them. Elsbeth doesn't know that she has been the muse for the artist since before her come out and marriage, when she was just a young girl frolicking in the park. After her long absence for her mourning, Dionysus could not help but imagine her nude. The picture was for himself only, never to be included in the show, but somehow it was taken and unveiled with great flourish right in front of Elsbeth and her family. Elsbeth's reputation was ruined and no one would believe that she didn't pose for the picture and didn't know the artist intimately.

Enter Nigel, the Marquess of Edgeworth who claims to be the sponsor of the artist and knows the mistake that was made and makes it very clear to Elsbeth, and her family, that he will do everything in his power (which is considerable) to clear her name and restore her reputation in the ton. He has other problems to worry about though, like people trying to kill him for his title and fortune. Can this one man, in the course of a week long house party, restore the reputation of one woman who is also determined to save his life?
Heat factor hot.

All in all, I really enjoyed these stories, that do indeed run the gamut from sweet to spicy, from traditional regency to more mystery to paranormal regency. That's fine with me because I read them all. Here's a way for you to try out a different type of book, but stay within the genre you like. They range from mild (just a few kisses) to moderate (a wedding night not described in graphic detail) to hot (some sexy sex not limited to the bedroom and described in more graphic detail).

Worth the .99 I paid for this collection of 4 books.

The Marriage List... A nice story..a couple of tame love scenes... Did not leave me feeling like I'd wasted my reading it.

Lady Iona's Rebellion...A follow up to the Marriage List....I really enjoyed this book. During the middle I started feeling like it was dragging on...but the ending was well worth it...Absolutely loved the ending.

Taken by Moonlight...I'd give this one a 1 star...I think it was a short story, didn't take me long to read it. This one left me shaking my head, wishing somebody had warned me to skip it. Hero can turn into a wolf. wolf pack kidnaps heroine, (she doesn't know that her real parents were wolf people too), To keep the packs Alpha from raping heroine, the hero spends 10 minutes seducing her. Afterwards, while threatened by the alpha the heroine turns into a wolf. Hero become new alpha, and the very next day heroine is declaring to all that she loves the hero...what???

The Nude is the final book in this collection...would probably rate it a 3 star. It had a lot of potential, good plot, dangers. Too many characters at the start left me confused for awhile...then the book just started dragging. At times I was left wondering if even the author knew where she wanted to go with this story.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good value for money but stories aren't fantastic 24 août 2013

I have written individual reviews for 3 of the books as I'd bought 2 of them previously. I hadn't read The Nude or the other paranormal short story and it was cheaper to buy this collection, than those separately.

***May contain some Spoilers***

The Marriage List

I enjoyed it and it was a clean historical. I did like the fact that the author paid attention to the times the people lived in and it wasn't a 'modern' historical. I liked the fact that the characters felt genuine passion but didn't actually act rashly. What I didn't like was how the H stubbornly continued his pursuit of another woman for his wife; the extremely annoying Lady Lilian even when he saw all her faults. He didn't stand up to his mother over it and I felt the mother never got sorted out for her interference. I think the author perhaps let the H dangle after Lady Lilian despite his attraction for the h, for too long and it ultimately detracted from the love story between the H and h.

Lady Iona's Rebellion

The H and h in this book were secondary characters in the above book and were intriguing. I liked the idea of this book but the execution left me wanting to throw my Kindle out the window. I can't remember being more irritated by an h ever. She is selfish and hurts the H over and over again. I liked him but he wasn't perfect either, wavering on and off. I want to feel the love story in romance novels, in this one I had my doubts. I'm also tired of the storyline where the h insists over and over again that she doesn't want to get married, it's just plain annoying.

Taken by Moonlight

This is a short story about a young lady abducted by werewolves. I can't comment on the story as I truly dislike paranormals of this kind and usually avoid them. I did read this book out of curiosity but it did nothing for me.

The Nude

This book really seemed different from the start and I was really enjoying it and the mystery of who was trying to kill the H. Then the author just had to make the h unlikeable. She had some really good ingredients happening like the mysterious artist and his paintings but about mid way through the story became inconsistent and went downhill.

The h had had a terrible first marriage but she already knew that the H was different, yet she persisted in fighting the marriage. The H marrying the h in a semi-legal way was never cleared up. We were told that he intended to fix it with the Bishop but it's not confirmed and I think it needed to be. The h was forever wavering over the h, sneaking into his bed at night but rejecting him by day. Usually by the time there is a marriage in a book it's a good idea to start building the relationship in a positive way. I just didn't like the h in the end. Throwing in an ex-mistress and a son by that ex seemed gratuitous and I'm totally unsure why the author thought it necessary. Overall there were way to many problems with this story and it's a pity after such a good beginning.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Very uneven 10 septembre 2013

This title is actually 4 books. The first two are related, with secondary characters in the first book becoming the main characters in the second book. The stories were entertaining enough, but the heroines both had the annoying trait of insisting they would never marry. Of course you know the whole point is for them to marry the hero, so it was 'the lady doth protest too much' over and over again. However, there were some nice unexpected twists in the story. The third book: well, prior to reading this I was unaware that there was a genre such as werewolf Regency romances. It was blessedly short, but then, it felt choppy and too easily resolved. The heroine's motivation to love the hero didn't work for a human, but I suppose that if you're a werewolf, sudden passion because someone's the right species might be the rule. The fourth novel was one of those that draws you in while you're reading it, but leaves you with a 'wait a minute' aftertaste, where you realize how many plot devices just didn't hold together. People acted illogically, the author tried to make a big mystery out of who was the painter, but the explanation just wasn't logical. The hero was described as being incredibly powerful socially, but a social recluse- just how does THAT work? Many things that happened in the book were just so illogical and improbable (people forgiving insults, being swayed by others, things like that) that although I could suspend disbelief for awhile, it all just eventually came tumbling down. The author has potential, but please, more characters that act like real human beings!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Four great books together 23 août 2013

I probably would have given a couple of these five stars, but altogether they still deserve four as a set. The third book was really a short novella, which I don't care for. I would read all of them again.
