Super book about knives! 28 juin 2014

This is a great reference for everyone-
Lots of info about different knives and what the differences are and why.
Some great info on how to use them and some styles and techniques
as well as great tech info and super test trials to eval performance.

But the main thing is that is is a wonderful collection
of images and info on a wide variety of some of the worlds best blades.

Well written and presented and easy to cross reference.
This is a must have for enthusiasts, collectors, amateurs and experts
and is a great gift idea for kids and folks whom just plain enjoy knives.

The Tactical Knife is a read well worth making. I was browsing at a bookstore and my attention was captured by photographs in the book—psychologists call it “an orienting response.” It is designed to capture our attention and get us to buy things, e.g., this book. It succeeded; I now have three copies of the second addition—one for home, one for my office, and one to lend to friends who may or may not understand knives—and one copy of the first addition.

Ayres covers much ground in the text—ranging from a basic definition of a tactical knife, to its historical development, to some of the roles it has played in our history, to evaluations of types or categories of knives, and then to specific evaluations of knives from a a variety of makers. In covering this ground, Ayres writes in a rich way that is available to the general user, conveys essential information, and can assist the advanced user; this is not an easy task and is one missed by many authors.

Ayres notes that knives have multiple uses—they can cut both bread and one’s neighbor—but avoids a simplistic reduction to either “love” or “hate”. He employs stories; see the story of a very early folding knife found in excavation of Roman ruins that is at once beautiful and almost mystical. (p. 6) He tells us of how a knife was used by a 15 year-old to save his mother and other women from pending execution in the Spanish civil war. (p. 9) He explores the role of “long knives” in our country’s early history and Rodgers’ Rangers and the Cold Country Cannibals. (p.19) Stories, text, and experiences blend flawlessly with color photographs (a significant step up form the first edition) to give readers deep understanding of even deeper themes.

While the curent quality of "knife media" generally leaves something to be desired- most are just extended ads- i found this book a fun read. I'm not new to knives, but it was interesting to get another mans' views on what a hard use knife should be. Incidentally, his definition of a "tactical knife" is similar for what I think of as a general purpose knife. While there are no major revelations, there are some good knife stories, and general background information.
Admittedly, my interest in this book came from hearing that it had a chapter on bowies. While short and general, and containing some debatable historical points, Ayers has clearly used some good bowie knives and has a good general idea of what makes the bowie a superior tool. Its not "hogwash" to those that have used good bowies.
Worth the read. 12 juin 2015

Quick read, a lot of opinions from someone who should know. There is a reason that tactical knives must meet certain standards and why. Each chapter spells out these criteria. However the next chapter in some ways refutes the previous chapter. Also mentions the Jim Bowie and James Black connection (more myth then fact I believe). Bringing up the big knife as apposed to the small knife, he tells why the big knife is better, then in the next chapter tells why a smaller knife is sufficient. He goes over the thick and thin blade and the tiny tactical knife. There is a reason that every thing he reviewed was "good to go" in its own right. His opinions and reviews are pointed to military, civilian and urban survival. It is worth the read.

This is a wonderful book and James Morgan Ayres does a superb job of discussing and teaching and displaying tactical and outdoors and everyday carry knives and cutting tools. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knives and tactical tools and survival related topics, as well as history.
