Présentation de l'éditeur

What's the buzz about the growing popularity of backyard beekeeping? Providing habitat for bees, pollinating your garden, and producing honey for your family are some of the compelling reasons for taking up this exciting hobby. But conventional beekeeping requires a significant investment and has a steep learning curve. The alternative? Consider beekeeping outside the box.

The Thinking Beekeeper is the definitive do-it-yourself guide to natural beekeeping in top bar hives. Based on the concept of understanding and working with bees' natural systems as opposed to trying to subvert them, the advantages of this approach include:

  • Simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Increased safety due to less heavy lifting and hive manipulation
  • Chemical-free colonies and healthy hives

Top bar hives can be located anywhere bees have access to forage, and they make ideal urban hives due to their small footprint.

Emphasizing the intimate connection between our food systems, bees, and the well-being of the planet, The Thinking Beekeeper will appeal to the new breed of beekeeper who is less focused on maximizing honey yield, and more on ensuring the viability of the bee population now and in the coming years.

Christy Hemenway is the owner and founder of Gold Star Honeybees, a complete resource for all things related to beekeeping in top-bar hives. A passionate bee-vangelist and advocate for natural, chemical-free beekeeping, Christy is a highly sought-after speaker, helping audiences to understand the integral connection between bees, food, human health, and the future of the planet.

The Thinking Beekeeper: A Guide to Natural Beekeeping in Top Bar Hives is appropriately titled. Christy Hemenway not only explains what to do and how to do it, but why you want to do it that way. Where the other books that I've read on beekeeping assume that the reader already knows the jargon, this one clearly explains the meanings of the terms. As a beginning beekeeper, I took away more understanding from this book than the previous three I had read on the subject combined. If you're a beginning beekeeper or if you're contemplating top bar hives, this book is a must read!

This book definitely does tell you exactly what it says it will - how and why to set up and beginner-manage a Kenyan style top-bar hive. There are a few areas that left me scratching my head and looking futilely for more information.
1. The author assumes that any beekeeper starting up a top bar hive will have an old empty brood comb lying around somewhere. No provisional instruction is given to those of us who are lone rank beginners starting with a pristine empty hive. How do we encourage OUR bees to stay without that stressed essential empty bar of comb?
2. Splitting the hive to prevent swarming is mentioned a few times throughout the text....but nowhere is there any instruction on HOW to perform a split. A beginner absolutely cannot be expected to know how to do this, and I'm disappointed that it was omitted. A discussion on top bar nuc creation would have been a helpful addition as well.
3. No mention of hive moving was to be found anywhere. I suppose this could be because it is assumed that anyone looking into beekeeping will pick up on the "3 feet or 3 miles" rule quickly...but as a beginner guide with the aim to convince beginners to start with a top bar hive, which WILL need splitting at some point, it would definitely make sense to cover moving.

So, as long as you don't need details on these things, this book is pretty great and will set you on your way.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A good basic book on Top Bar beekeeping 2 mars 2013

This is a great little book on Top Bar beekeeping. The author uses her own product (the hives she sells) in her examples, but does explain how to do the manipulations if your hives are a little different. It's a little short on the biology of the bees themselves, but there are other good books and web sites for that. She stresses treatment free, which may be the way to avoid problems such as Colony Collapse Disorder and other ills. It will stay a part of my bee keeping library.

Not a bad book, but I got more from Top-Bar Beekeeping: Organic Practices for Honeybee Health I read this in Kindle edition on my iPad and all of the images other than the cover were black and white. I assume the actual book is in color. Almost no time spent on building a hive, but it did mention purchasing a hive from Gold Star Honeybees, which is owned by the author. There is a large glossary and index which are about 1/4 of the book (at least on the kindle). Just seems like there should be more there there. On the other hand it only cost 9.99 on the kindle, and I'm glad to see anything published on Top Bar hives.

I devoured this book in two days. It is enjoyable, easy reading that gives enough details that a newbee would feel confidant setting up their first hive. It is not an exhaustive tome, but a succinct overview of everything a beginner needs to know about setting up top bar hives, especially how they differ from conventional beekeeping, but also basics a beginner needs to know. I highly recommend it.
