Excellente bibliographie.

The Definative Text on the Egyptian Tomb 27 avril 2009
Par John O. Freed - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
This authoritative text is written by two well known scholars who have the ability to describe the development of Ancient Egyptian tombs through history in full detail without being dull. The text contains a wealth of facts about all aspects of Egyptian tomb building, from construction methods and architectural styles to the decoration of the tomb's walls. The text also contains overviews of the various funerary texts found in the tombs ("The Book of Gates", etc.).

The illustrations are well chosen and beautifully reproduced. There are hundreds of photographs, with many in color, as well as floor plans and maps. Many of the photos have been rarely, if ever, published in previous books.

I would recommend this book without reservation.

The Tomb in Ancient Egypt is a long awaited companion volume to the authors earlier book Thw Mummy in Ancient Egypt. The authors Salima Ikram and Aidan Dodson both well known and respected scholars have put into one book all the information, background and history of the tombs of Ancient Egypt that one could wish to know. The book will serve the professional and interested lay persond equally well. The book is the product of through research yet is writen in a style that is both informative and well organized , so that even a beginner will walk away with a full understanding of the topic.

A glorious book 6 novembre 2008

Looking at it, you might be excused for thinking it was just a coffee table book. But this a book that deserves to be read and cherished, not just sit on a coffee table.

Lavish with pictures, maps, illustrations of all kinds, the book covers Egyptian funeral practices since the predynastic times right through the late Graeco-Roman era. It covers not only all the beliefs about the afterlife, and the society that existed at the time, but also the construction and development of the tombs.

"The construction of the kings's tomb would start at his accession. According to Herodotuis, it took 20 years to build the Great Pyramid at Giza" (p 32). It is interesting to learn that "Illumination...would be reflected into the tomb by mirrors of polished metal" (p 51).

Thousands of years after its start, Egypt would fall, conquered at last by Alexander the Great and then Rome. "Graeco-Roman Period tombs mark the end of the line of monuments that stretch back to beyond the dawn of history (P 303).

For anyone interested in ancient Egypt, a fine book.

This is a very interesting book for all the people interested in egyptian tombs. The great number of photos and plans make this book be a must for students and anyone who like Ancient Egypt. I should remark that I haven't received the book yet but there is a copy in my University; that is why I know the publication.
Fantastic book, but not a casual read... 10 septembre 2014

I will say that this is not a coffee table book and isn't for casual readers on the subject. The book itself is more text than imagery, and for that I am thankful. However, for those that aren't interested in every minute detail on Egyptian beliefs relating to the afterlife and their tombs, this could prove to be a boring read. The author stays away from making outlandish claims and states the facts, which is probably why I enjoy it so much. I know some Egyptologists tend to draw conclusions and claim them to be fact, but that isn't the case here. The text is extremely well researched and reads more like a textbook, but it doesn't come across as extremely boring or dry by any means. There is so much fascinating information in here and more importantly, the layouts of the tombs are sketched out. You get a much better understanding of the ancient burial customs than if you were to read a book that quickly touches on the subject.

Though I did say that the book is more text oriented as opposed to glossy photos, it doesn't mean that there aren't any great photographs. However, the photographs aren't the focal point of the book. They are used to accompany the text and help the reader understand what is being talked about. I will say that most photographs are in black and white, and there are few colored ones.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! It is a fascinating read that can take some time to finish, but it leaves you understanding the ancient Egyptians much better. I would recommend that anyone reading this have at least some understanding of the culture because it can be overwhelming if you don't.
