Présentation de l'éditeur

My life is a lovely story, happy and full of incident. If, when I was a boy, and went forth into the world poor and friendless, a good fairy had met me and said, "Choose now thy own course through life, and the object for which thou wilt strive, and then, according to the development of thy mind, and as reason requires, I will guide and defend thee to its attainment," my fate could not, even then, have been directed more happily, more prudently, or better. The history of my life will say to the world what it says to me-There is a loving God, who directs all things for the best. My native land, Denmark, is a poetical land, full of popular traditions, old songs, and an eventful history, which has become bound up with that of Sweden and Norway. The Danish islands are possessed of beautiful beech woods, and corn and clover fields: they resemble gardens on a great scale. Upon one of these green islands, Funen, stands Odense, the place of my birth. Odense is called after the pagan god Odin, who, as tradition states, lived here: this place is the capital of the province, and lies twenty-two Danish miles from Copenhagen.

Art imitates life in this poignant and poetic rendering of the life of one of my favorite childhood authors. Just a great and wonderful read.

This autobiography by the author gives allot of insight into were he stories come from, and what some of them at least are actually about. It is interesting to see how times have changed.

I find the story of H.C. Anderson's life as fascinating as the stories he wrote. What obstacles he overcame--and how frank he was about his misgivings, depression, the scorn heaped upon him, and yet he plowed on. He wanted to be an actor but was basically told to not give up his day job. He wanted to do opera but lost his voice (though regained it later). It was as if he was slowly given no option but to put his heart and soul to paper--to become a writer. I'd not want to have to go through what he did--but the world is better for it that he kept at it and became the beloved writer of tales that I like as much in my later years as I did in childhood.

Very readable translation; you'll enjoy it, and never read his stories again without thinking of the fascinating true tale behind them.

What inspired me to read this book was the old classic movie starring Danny Kay. Although I haven't watched it in many years I do remember how it made me feel at times overcome with joy as Kay was quite the character full of emotion, hope, and a passion for life that's rarely seen. Of course I grew up loving Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales and wit among them "The Ugly Duckling", "The Princess and the Pea", and The Emperor's New Clothes" were a few of my favorites.
Reading the biography of this highly gifted author gave me more of an insight of Andersen's deep love for the Bible, God, and how he desperately clung to his faith during his struggles to overcome a self perceived learning disability and how although sometimes a loner, with more of a grandiose imagination than most, was able to conquer his fears of rejection time and time again to become a legend in his own lifetime! By his writing I believe he was rather self-absorbed, yet, oh so humble as probably a consequence of being humiliated often in his younger years by his peers. Without giving too much away here, Andersen gives you a peek of what it was like in the 1800's aspiring to be a notable poet in Denmark and how with fate and his fierce dedication brought him more than he could ever dream of!
