Refreshingly different 3 février 2013

I've never been a great fan of horror. More than twenty years ago, my friend Alex and I used to search out H.P. Lovecraft's works in local used bookstores, and he would try to make me interested. His enthusiasm nearly sold me, but the prices his books fetched at the time made me decline.

Fast forward those twenty-odd years, and Wordsworth Editions has published his stories in editions that cost way, way less than those earlier ones. I thought I'd give him a go after all these years, and I'm sure glad that I did.

The stories concern a race of beings from space who once lived on Earth many millions of years ago, and every now and then someone will experience some sort of mental contact with them, or will stumble across one of their cities. I found Lovecraft's descriptions of the cities of the Old Ones breathtaking, and it's never made clear (at least in the stories in this collection) whether the Old Ones are benign or unthinking conquerors, although we're given clues that could point either way.

It's difficult to explain his style, but his use of first-person narrators lends a great deal of verisimilitude to the stories, and I found myself being drawn into the stories in a way that only a handful of authors have managed to achieve before.

I have volume two on my shelves, and I shall be starting it rather soon. I cannot recommend this volume highly enough.

Good old fashioned horror, leaving the worst to your imagination. Written when correct grammar was observed and vocabulary valued. Well written.

The Whisperer in Darkness 6 avril 2014

H.P. Lovecraft was a brilliant writer of horror and science fiction stories. He was a master in creating a growing atmosphere of horror and foreboding in his works. The Whisperer in Darkness is, in my opinion, one of Lovecraft's best works. The story starts out slowly but gradually quickens its pace as the narrator describes his correspondence and interaction with a reclusive scholar in remote Vermont who believes he is threatened by an unseen presence. Lovecraft was known for creating a mythology involving ancient creatures and/or intelligences from other worlds and including aspects of this mythos in many of his works. The Whisperer in Darkness is one of the stories that includes aspects of this mythology. The narration in the CD is good. If you are a fan of H.P. Lovecraft or of interesting horror/science fiction stories in general, I think you will find this CD worth the price.
Some of Lovecraft's best works 10 septembre 2014

Now, I had already read a fair bit of Lovecraft prior to purchasing this book, and like anyone who has done so, I know he can be a bit hit and miss. Well, rest assured, this is a collection of hits. Everything from the title story to The Call of Cthulhu (possibly his most famous work) to one of my favorites, At the Mountains of Madness, is contained in this volume. It would be an excellent purchase for someone looking to get into Lovecraft, or really just for anyone looking for a good collection of his works

A note on the volume itself: quality-wise, it's slightly better than a mass market paperback (which is probably most of the other stuff you'll find at this price range). It's definitely seen a lot of use since I bought it, and though the plastic coating on the cover is coming up in a couple of places the printing is still pristine; it's a very good price for what you're getting in that arena.
I don't know how I got though life without Mr. Lovecraft. 4 novembre 2014

I for some reason have never read any Lovecraft, I don't know why but I am very glad I started. I absolutely loved these stories, I don't know how I got though life without Mr. Lovecraft. I know am looking for a complete volume of his work.
