Specific information about food, exercise, stress reduction, and ways to seek comfort and happiness are presented here in a "street friendly" tone. As accomplished as Dr. Kahn is, with his never-ending list of jaw dropping medical credentials, he talks to us in a friendly non-threatening, easy to understand tone. Everyone knows that it's scary to make changes. As you read through his book, Dr. Kahn seems to be holding our hand as we explore a different road toward improved health.
On a personal note, my mother was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation and was one of the few patients (at the time) selected for an innovative mitral valve repair procedure. One of the criteria for selection was that the patient would not survive without this. Dr. Kahn guided me over the phone (he in Detroit, me in NY) about supplements that would be helpful for her, better heart meds, better food choices, heart strengthening exercises, health brain exercises (a healthy brain and a healthy heart go together) and encouraged me to keep offering her strength and support. When is came time for my mom's final evaluation right before surgery, the doctors in New York were flabbergasted. Her heart condition significantly improved and she no longer has regurgitation. Her cardiologist in New York said, 'I have never seen anything like this before, usually things go the other way, her progression is unbelievable." Mom no longer needed this procedure! Now, almost 3 years later at 87, she is dancing, playing Bridge and enjoying her life with her family.
I have bought and given this book out as a gift to several of my friends. Indeed, The Whole Heart Solution can be considered a gift of life.
Though the real value of the book is in part two, it is part one which helps create a sense of urgency and forces the reader to seriously follow the prescriptions given.
One thing which the book might have done without is talking about brand names of mixers and blenders (chapter 7), simply to avoid any unnecessary perceptions of the author having an interest in these companies.
My personal experience:
The day I read this book, I decided to improve the eating habits of my family. As a start, I offered veg noodle soup to my kids. It was shocking to see the kids making a fuss about the "green stuff" in their soup. Was an eye opener for me.
Post that, we have been following various suggestions in the book and have seen definite improvements in our eating habits, activity level and general well being.
The few things we have adopted in the last 3 months:
A. Stopped getting processed canned food and replaced them with fresh fruits and vegetables.
B. Increased juice intake - carrot, pomegranate, orange are some of our favorite.
C. Cut down on eating out.
D. Started practicing regular yoga. Sun salutation is our favorite. We use "Simply yoga" ios app.
E. Got into the practice of finishing our dinner by 7 pm max. (Kitchen closed after 8 pm).
These steps seem to be working for us. I have read the book cover to cover and keep going back to it when I see my resolve getting diluted.
Thank You Dr Joel. :)
Heart disease runs in both sides of my family. I knew I did not want to end up on medication or even worse have my chest cracked open. In this book Dr. Kahn teaches you how to change your diet, about how wonderful meditation is, hot sauna's, yoga, and even how walking barefoot in the grass is good for your heart health. He makes heart health fun.
I know I have taken the right steps towards making sure I don't go down the same path my father and grandfathers did. Read this book if you want to change your life too. I was worried that it would be too drastic or demanding but it is not. I've learned all about telomeres and how to make them longer and why I should care about them along with all kinds of fascinating information about cardiovascular care.
It is an all inclusive book, he also teaches you how to pick and choose the best vitamins and minerals that are good for you. He explains what they are and what they do to and for your body and heart. I am just thrilled with the way I feel.
