Revue de presse

"Chan provides an insider’s account of the spiritual master’s teachings at venues large and small....  Leaving intact the Dalai Lama’s distinctive English, Chan vividly conveys the world leader’s intense curiosity, intelligence, explosive laughter, keen wisdom, and kindness; his account of the Dalai Lama’s conversation with Archbishop Desmond Tutu crackles with energy. Throughout, His Holiness incisively conveys his core teaching that inner transformation is key to alleviating suffering and bringing peace to a violent world. He also listens intently to innovators who are committed to the same goals. Details provide immediacy; carefully placed background information gives context. These inspiring dialogues communicate His Holiness’s worldwide appeal and essential commitment to compassion." -- Publishers Weekly

“Tales of kindness and understanding from the Dalai Lama…[Readers] will come away with a better sense of the importance of communication, forgiveness and empathy, regardless of the circumstances.” – Kirkus Reviews

Présentation de l'éditeur

The Wisdom of Compassion offers rare insights into the Dalai Lama’s life as he interacts with remarkable people from all walks of life. In these deeply engaging behind-the-scenes stories we see not only the Dalai Lama at his most human, and most humane, but also the way he approaches the world with humour and optimism.

As he empathizes with those who are suffering, and demonstrates the tangible benefits of practising forgiveness and compassion, the Dalai Lama reveals the many lessons he has learned, including how

* his collaborations with leading neuroscientists, psychologists, teachers and students from around the world have taught him how to educate the heart;

* his inspiring friendship with a blind Irishman, the only person he calls his hero, has taught him how one can overcome adversity;

* through his encounters with illiterate grandmothers learning how to harness solar power for their communities, a beggar girl, and his soulmate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, he has discovered how compassion can be translated into action.

Enhanced by the Dalai Lama’s seven decades of practice and illuminated through captivating anecdotes, The Wisdom of Compassion can help readers to lead more fulfilling lives. The Dalai Lama also shows how, when we open our hearts and minds to others, we are on the surest path to true happiness.

This is one of HHDL's easiest books to read. Also one of the most beneficial regarding Buddhism. Anyone interested in Buddhism or of HHDL will enjoy this.

This compares to HHDL's Art of Happiness in giving simple, easy ways to understand Buddhism and life.

We all know his name as one of the greatest spiritual leader/teacher in our time ....The author Victor Chan brings to the reader in a series of encounters over a few years how compassionate service plays out in on the world stage both with other great statesman/ teachers to children. I have not followed the Dalai Lama's teaching specially but this small treasure opened a new door to enter into the living buddha nature that awakens .our own journey of compassion.

This, just as the first book by this author (Wisdom of Forgiveness) is breathtaking, you can feel the warmth and authenticity of the Dalai Lama as if he were there in front of you. The stories told on the various humanitarian projects are amazing, motivating and also very humbling and made you truly think about your own life. Definitely a must read for any human being!
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Meetings with the Dalai Lama 22 mars 2013
Par Robin Friedman - Publié sur Amazon.com
A chance series of events led a young college graduate, Victor Chan, to his first meeting with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, in 1972. Chan did not meet the Dalai Lama again until 1994. Then, at a third meeting in 1999, the Dalai Lama agreed to collaborate with Chan on a book, resulting in "The Wisdom of Forgiveness" in 2005.The Wisdom of Forgiveness The book described various meetings and discussions between the Dalai Lama, Chan, and other people. Subsequent to the 1999 meeting, Chan has continued to have close contact with the Dalai Lama. He and the Dalai Lama have now collaborated on another book (Chan is the writer), a sequel to the first, "The Wisdom of Compassion: Stories of Remarkable Encounters and Timeless Insights." (2012) The book is one of many, including Chan's earlier work, that try to offer an intimate, close-up portrayal of the Dalai Lama, who has become a world-wide revered religious figure.

Chan's book describes meetings he attended with the Dalai Lama between 2000 and 2010. Some of the meetings were personal and small with no media present. Others were on a large stage, attended by many people, and with wide publicity. Again, the people at the meetings ranged from beggars, the sick, school children, and prisoners to renowned scientists, celebrities, humanitarians, and political leaders. The discussions in the book tend to be short. They focus on the Dalai Lama as a person, the essence of his teachings, and the effect he has on those around him.

Chan offers the following summary of the Dalai Lama's teaching for purposes of the book.

"Helping others does not mean we do this at our own expense... Buddhas and other enlightened beings are very wise. Throughout their livesthey only want one thing; to achieve ultimate happiness. How to do this? Be altruistic, cultivate compassion. When they care for others, they themselves are the first to benefit -- they are the first to get maximum happiness. They know that the best way to lead happy life is to help others. That is real wisdom."

The book is divided into three sections, which Chan describes as showing the nature of compassion in thought, "Overcoming Adversity", speech, "Educating the Heart", and deed, "Compassion in Action".

The book is at its best in describing meetings out of the public eye, with children suffering from terrible illnesses, prisoners, and a poignant impromptu scene with a young girl beggar. The several meetings between the Dalai Lama and distinguished scientists in the fields of neurology and psychology are also valuable as they describe subjects in which the Dalai Lama has a genuine interest and knowledge. They show an immediate personal and subject matter connection between the Dalai Lama and his interlocutors. I found the discussions between the Dalai Lama and various political and religious figures more routine. Most of these discussions took place in public forums and were somewhat bland. The discussions with various humanitarians who have founded nonprofits were mixed. I learned about activities I hadn't known about and learned from the subtelties of the Dalai Lama's comments and questions.

The book in passing gives small insightful looks into the Dalai Lama. Chan observes for example that in private and with people he knows well, the Dalai Lama enjoys telling and hearing an occasional off-color joke. In his discussions, the Dalai Lama frequently responds in a way that initially might be unexpected. He gives a short and perhaps stony summary of the doctrine of karma to the father of a very sick child that at least at the outset seems the opposite of a compassionate response. He responds with a degree of caution, mixed with his enthusiasm, to humanitarian efforts directed towards improving the lot of poor women when these efforts appear to be combined with a harsh criticism of men. He supports efforts to find rewarding education and work for poor, semi-literate individuals while insisting as well on the value of literacy and traditional education. He politely shies away from overt criticism of social institutions in certain countries. He shows little interest in a panel discussion in which he had been asked to participate on the nature of creativity in the arts. In these and other details, the book adds bite and detail to the portrayal of the Dalai Lama.

In other places, I thought the book brief and simplistic without much to add to the many other books by and about the Dalai Lama, especially when he speaks in his own voice. Chan provides necessary background about the Dalai Lama's interlocutors and information about the Dalai Lama's teachings. I found at times that Chan's voice was overly intrusive and editorializing. And, in general, the more widely-renowned the speakers and the more public the conversations reported in this book, the more scripted and less valuable were the results.

In the main, this is a worthwhile book about the Dalai Lama and the reasons underlying his influence and the reverence he inspires. I think it works best as supplemental reading for those who have read other books about the Dalai Lama and his teachings and are willing to dig for details not widely available elsewhere.
