Présentation de l'éditeur

In this buoyant, inspirational A-Z, Angela Neustatter writes about the quirky side of ageing. The ways we learn to deal with conflicts, problems, relationships, feelings about our appearance and behaviour through the years become a delight rather than a chore. Angela Neustatter considers in a light-hearted way what you can do to celebrate growing older. She wonders about the influence of age on dress - do you need to dress differently (no) or do you yourself start to change your views (yes), relationships with colleagues and friends, love and sex. This quirky book of observations will delight anyone, and is a perfect Christmas gift.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Funny and serious - in a good way 10 janvier 2014

Angela Neustatter is on ebullient form in her new book, an elegant volume of her thoughts on turning seventy and on symbolically, at least, entering a new stage of life. How has she changed? What does she treasure? What will she leave behind in this new decade and what will she go for with greater gusto? Arranged in alphabetical order, her short, punchy chapters have headings such as Appearance, Friends, Health, Kindness and Loss - and lots more, including, tantalisingly - Bunkum, Omigod and Questionable. One of my favourites is called Never Mind, in which she counsels letting go of old grudges because "One of the tragedies of growing through life is how long it takes to mind less about these things which gobble up the emotional energy and cement feuds and unhappiness." And that kind of honing of life to its essentials is at the heart of this book. With the lightest touch, Neustatter draws on her experience as a journalist, citing examples of who has inspired her why one approach might be more fun and rewarding than another, and where one has to give oneself a good talking to. She thinks we deserve to have a good time, and knows it takes both spirit and acceptance to achieve that. Delicious, bracing and consoling, this is a book to dip into regularly. I would read mine in the bath, if it wasn't for the mist on my specs...

Top British journalist Angela Neustatter has applied her superb reporting skills to a highly readable, amusing, tongue-in-cheek and very personal observation of life in her 70th year! Peppered with comments like "How refreshing it is to reach an age where you care less and dare more". Neustatter even takes on the taboo topic of "senior sex" considered "gross" by the young. Indeed she holds up a mirror to the assumptions and stereotyping to which many seniors are subjected, and busts those assumptions by quoting a range of resources and research such as the survey conducted by the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke university that discovered septuagenarians who "can live as they choose, are markedly happier than those a quarter of a century younger." I read Neustatter's delightful little book during a recent four hour flight taken.....wait for it.... on my 70th birthday!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A fun, uplifting book! 28 janvier 2014

Angela Neustatter brings her own unique and clever spin to the inevitable challenges -- and perks -- that come with growing older. While often light and breezy, the book is also thought-provoking and encouraging, displaying in alphabetical order how aging can add a truly positive dimension to one's life. As Neustatter says in her introduction, "I can grasp a more Zen way of being, enjoying the here and now and casting new dreams for a new age. It brings harmoniousness of the spirit I had not expected."

A quick, fun and compelling read that will engage anyone who is or will one day enter the later stages of life, opening one's eyes to just how fulfilling life can be for those of a "certain age."

Absolutely loved it! An honest, funny, insightful, personal, emotional and thought provoking book for every letter of the alphabet. Wonder if it could be more helpful, supportive and life changing than years of therapy....certainly for many. Loved the references to The Old Man - am filled with envy for his joining you and 'dancing' together. It has really stirred so many things in me, it felt as if the book was written for just me alone and I am sure that many women will feel the same. Something to dip into, go back to, read a chapter before turning out the light and holding on to thoughts and possibilities.

Fun, witty, charming and uplifting! You don't need to wait for your 70s to kick in, because a good advice can never be too early AND you don't need to be a women, because the gravity affects us all equally, just ask the Old Man :). My personal favorite is 'I don't mind'. But you have to read the book to find what it's about.
