Revue de presse

"Raw, revealing, intimate, and affecting, The Things You Would Have Said reminds us that our most profound personal struggles are universal."
(Davy Rothbart, creator of Found magazine)

"These heartfelt letters of hope, joy, pain, and despair combine to form a collective message: always choose love, and endeavor to live a life without regret. Can a single letter change your life? Yes--and this book is proof."
(Chris Guillebeau, author of The Art of Non-Conformity)

"Jackie Hooper had a terrific idea: chronicle stories of important things left unsaid. The result is this poignant, humorous, and uplifting book. A fascinating read, it offers the motivation we all need to say what needs to be said -- while our loved ones are around to hear it."
(Karl Pillemer, author of 30 Lessons for Living)

Présentation de l'éditeur

A collection of extraordinary letters expressing the joys, sorrows, and surprises of ordinary lives.

We've all missed the chance to say something important. Friends fall out of touch, loved ones pass away, or sometimes the courage required is simply lacking-and thank-yous, regrets, feelings, and secrets are left unshared. In 2009, Jackie Hooper came up with a way to help people recapture a moment that had once passed them by-she began asking them to write letters.

Based on the popular blog The Things You Would Have Said,, this extraordinary collection of letters brings together the moving, surprising, and inspiring stories of ordinary people. By turns heartwarming, funny, sad, and wise, the letters showcase a remarkable range of voices and subjects. From the indignant young boy urging his bully to become "a better man," to the woman apologizing to the girl she picked on in high school, to a man thanking the woman who protected his family from Nazis, the letters bring together an outpouring of emotion that is as compelling as it is cathartic.

What a great concept for a book! We all have been in that position at one time or another in our lives. It was so well put together even though there were so many variables in the letters. I think it is the perfect read for somebody who is busy and wants to spend just a few minutes a day reading something interesting. Whenever I had a few extra minutes I would pull out the book and read one or two letters and then I could put it down, go about my everyday chores and still have my mind occupied on what I had read. Great job, Jackie.

I thought this sounded like a cool idea when I heard about it, but I didn't realize how much actually reading the letters would affect me. They remind you that keeping things in because you're scared or embarrassed just might mean that you'll never get a chance to say them. You realize that sometimes the smallest words are so powerful and so meaningful. I think anyone who loves people in general should read this. Especially if there's someone out there that you love, or loved, and never got a chance to tell them how much.

I had been following the blog for a year or more, but had never submitted a letter. When I saw that Jackie had written a book, I immediately downloaded it. I started reading it in the morning and didn't (couldn't) put it down until I had finished it that afternoon! Having had several deaths in my family over the years and doing volunteer work dealing with people (usually) suffering a loss, I thought the book might be "interesting". I LOVED it! Not just about a death loss, but also death of a relationship, losing touch with old friends, saying long over due thank yous. Something for everyone. Now i'm thinking, "I HAVE to write some letters for the blog." If you've ever said or thought, "I wish I had told them..." read this book.
