Présentation de l'éditeur

My name is Dagan. There are few alive with more blood on their hands than me.

I have lived a life of degeneracy. I have studied the teachings of the dark mage Helosis and walked the path of the dead. I have been to the shadowrealm and emerged with my soul intact. I have challenged the Black Brotherhood and ridden with the Knights of Valamor as a brother-in-arms. I have spoken to Xune.

I've killed indiscriminately—for money, for fame. For vengeance.

When I was young, I fell in love with a princess and was punished by her death. I have scampered, begged, and thieved. I have been homeless. I have ruled the greatest city ever built.

I began a succession war. I alone know who lifted the Seals of Regor—and how. I was there when magic was restored to this world. If I'd been born in a different age, I would have been the greatest sorcerer known to man.

My name is Dagan. This is my tale.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 As Good as Rothfuss 29 mars 2014

Due to the nature of the framing device, this book will inevitably be compared to The Kingkiller Chronicles. Both of them involve a mysterious man of power and experience telling his life story in a tavern. But that's where the comparison ends. This book is much darker than Rothfuss, and I liked it perhaps a little more. It's certainly one of the best self-published books that I have read this year.

The setting is fascinating and well-realized. The villains are believably bad, within the confines of the story. Dagan makes for an interesting hero, with an aura of mystery lingering about him. I liked the plot and thought it was paced well and logical. I would like to know more about the world of the Ashes Saga and what happens to make Dagan whatever he is. The book is a little short, but on the other hand, it doesn't meander. Some people pad their story with a lot of unnecessary extras, but Knight keeps it lean and mean.

I'll be buying the second one when it comes out. And I recommend that you buy this one.

Let me start off by pointing out that I didn't make it halfway through the book. If you read this book from start to finish and loved it kudos to you, I'm just posting my personal opinions.

The description of this book had me incredibly excited to start reading it. Once I did however, I was rather disappointed. The story moves along so quickly it seemed that the character development was rushed (again I didn't read the entire book so take that with a grain of salt). I felt as if not only the plot was rushed, but the entire writing of the book was. It includes many grammatical and spelling errors, which are hard enough to ignore in books that I love (such as A Memory of Light or any of the Malazan books by Ian C. Esslemont).

All the sentences and paragraphs were very short as well which made me feel like I was reading a children's or young adult book (which it very clearly isn't). The author also seemed to lack descriptive writing skills (or hardly showed them) in what I read. It was this combination of things that made me decide to put the book down and walk away from it.

But hey, it was 99 cents: low risk, high reward. I'll be checking out some of his material in the future in the hopes that he works out the kinks, this story seemed very promising.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 An excellent first book, with easily found areas to improve upon 29 juillet 2014

The book clips along at an excellent pace. The writing is ok. The author is prone to some profound wording, and also some devastatingly annoying foils, that are repeated ad nauseum.

For instance (completely made up text):
The general populace had no idea what to expect from the coming revolution.
But I did
The constabulary were not prepared for what would come next.
But I was.

And while this can be an endearing form of writing, used to pump the protagonists tires', after using the same style 5-10 times in the first few pages? Oi, please let it stop!

Anyways, back to the good, the story certainly has some intriguing portions, and the book wants you to read it. It's an excellent first entry for a new author. It is a short book though, and can easily be finished in 1-2 days.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Absolutely outstanding new fantasy 9 juin 2014

I have never written a book review before but after reading this most excellent book I felt I must comment. I read three to four books a week so I spend a lot of time reading. This book was simply fantastic. As many have mentioned it did remind me of "The Name of the Wind" and I mean that as praise. One of the best fantasy books I have read in years and I am including established authors in that statement. My only complaint is that it was way too short. I loved it so much I wanted more. I did not want it to end. I will absolutely buy the next book in the series and look forward to reading any thing written by this author in the future. Best wishes Mr. Knight.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Subpar English language skills. 28 avril 2014

Although the plot of this book was gripping, the author seemed to lack basic English language skills, stretching and using words far beyond their vocabulary - usually incorrectly. In addition, the sentence structure is simplistic, stunted, and choppy.
This book is worth the 99 cents I paid for it, because, quite honestly, the plot was riveting.
I just wish the author would do themselves a favor and get a strong editor to actually read over their work before publishing.
This book could have been excellent, but instead it was simply conceptually sound.
Of course, it doesn't deserve to breathe the same air as "The Kingkiller Chronicles", but that's just because Patrick Rothfuss is a bloody genius.
I hope the next book is properly edited, because if so, I would happily buy,
