THROUGH A CROOKED SUN est le deuxième album solo du guitariste des Black Crowes: Rich Robinson. Les guitares sont percutantes, mordantes, typiques du style Rich Robinson au sein des Crowes! On pense plus particulièrement aux guitares de BEFORE THE FROST...UNTIL THE FREEZE.

"Rich Robinson continues his quest to create the next Nick Drake album... and this time he's closer than he's ever been."

Every time the Black Crowes go on hiatus, we get the "parts" of Rich and Chris doing solo ventures. Though the sum of those parts(TBC) is always better than either brother solo, of the two brother's Rich's solo albums and tours are (for this TBC and Robinson brother fan) a greater treat. You never know where Rich is going to go with a solo song because the canvas that he's working on is so big - its very much the Black Crowes catalog mixed with a healthy dose of the unimaginably large personal music catalog Rich and his brother must have and know by heart. At one moment he could be channeling Jimmy Page, then he's more Stephen Stills, then you are sure its the Grease Band, but before you know it he's entered uncharted territory. His is music by a music lover, and he has mastered the art of pulling "that sound" that worked so well on that obscure record and making it something new and alive. Every time I listen to Rich Robinson music, I wonder: "How many thousands of obscure records do Rich and Chris have?"

Rich's first solo studio album (Paper) hit all the right notes, but a number of the songs seemed to drag a bit. Beyond that, the freshman effort featured Rich's first real attempt at singing, and the album as a whole really only had two textures to it (lovely acoustic Rich and full throttle electric Rich). It felt like Rich and a bunch of cool guitars spent a few days in the studio with a drummer, producing a less than organic sound, but delivering big time in riffs and rock. That reality made Paper a great start and showed the potential that Rich had as a solo artist. A followup would have to wait because the band got back together and released the classic BTF-UTF, which allowed the Robinsons to flex some of the new muscles they had developed on their solo ventures.

Fast forward to another hiatus, and we finally get that followup. Rich's second album "Through a Crooked Sun" is leaps and bounds beyond Paper. Its intelligent lyrically, and his singing is comfortable and intimate. There are a number of different vibes and feelings and the instruments and textures they bring is far deeper than Paper. As a whole the songs feel organic, like followup songs to BTF-UTF. Fan of Rich Robinson know that he's quite a bit more Nick Drake than Keith Richards, and on this album Rich Robinson continues his quest to create the next Nick Drake album... and this time he's closer than he's ever been.

Through a Crooked Sun is an essential part of any Black Crowes collection. It continues the evolution of the band and builds on everything that Rich has done with and without the band. Catch Rich on tour solo if you can. Pick this album up and tell your friends to support real music by real artists like Rich and Chris Robinson. They will open your mind to the wonders of music.

HASH(0x91efd6b4) étoiles sur 5 A Fun Journey 11 octobre 2011

Rich Robinson's "Through A Crooked Sun" is worth the buy...go get it!!! This album shows you where the Black Crowes got their funky, trippy sound from. The songs lead from lows to highs...the overall feel is laid-back yet it rocks out at times. "Its Not Easy" has this really cool, funky '70s groove to it...very solid song. Then "I Don't Hear the Sound of You" starts very mellow and laid-back and then morphs into this jazz/swing kinda thing...didn't see that coming, but it is brilliant!! I'm not trying to give you a song by song review here...I'm sure someone more ambitious than I will do that...and frankly, I want to get back to listening to this CD again. One thing I will add, vocally, Rich doesn't have the pipes his brother does. However, his vocals are strong and works well for his songs. Trust the CD, it is a cool journey through a crooked sun!

I like the Black Crowes a lot, and am happy to hear Rich Robinson's continued growth as a guitarist-singer-songwriter. He's delivered a gritty , tuneful album that -at times-reminds me of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac , Traffic, Neil Young, etc. All in all, a great listen -and, having had this cd for some time now, it has become one of my favorite releases of 2011 . The Soiled Dove ( Denver ) show was fantastic - what an incredible live band !!!

Honestly, I dont love every song, but the other 8 or 9 songs on this album I absolutely love. Phenomenal album. I highly recommend to anyone who likes the Crowes, but more than that, anyone who loves good music! Very good songwriting, and the cover Station Man is just awesome. I have had the album since it came out a couple weeks ago and every time I get into my car its like its brand new to me again. So dang good, nice work Mr. Robinson. Keep it up! I'll be at your next show!

Rich sounds excellent on this album! His voice is at its best ever and his riffs are as strong as ever. I enjoyed all of the songs upon first listen, but, as I gave it more spins, each and every one grew on me even more. I then realized what a truly deep and rich album this is emotionally and sonically. Very direct and open songs. Some rock, others jam and some are mellow. All of the musicianship is top notch. I highly recommend this album, just don't short-change it by expecting a Black Crowes record or by only giving it a few listens - it is indeed exceptional.
