The connection between thyroid disease and metabolic / hormonal symptoms like weight changes, fatigue, fertility, and menopause are beginning to be better understood. Still, there is a real need for more understanding by the community and practitioners regarding the mental and emotional symptoms that can arise from thyroid conditions. Depression, for example, is a common but often overlooked thyroid symptom, and one that often doesn't resolve in patients -- even after treatment with an antidepressant medication -- until the thyroid is properly diagnosed and treated.
As a thyroid patient advocate, I highly recommend Thyroid Mind Power. In Thyroid Mind Power, the unique team of holistic physician Richard Shames, MD, holistic nurse and counselor Karilee Shames, PhD, RN and acupuncture specialist Georjana Shames LAc, turn their focus to this important area of thyroid diagnosis and treatment. Long known for their integrative approach to thyroid care, the Shames have a reputation as some of the leading integrative practitioners in the area of hormonal health. In Thyroid Mind Power, they put their integrative focus toward the exploration of important issues that can be related to thyroid treatment, including depression, anxiety, rage, addictions, sleep disorders, autism, attention deficit issues, and mood cycles.
The Shames team rightly believes that we need to clearly identify and help the three key categories of people that need better thyroid care, which include the undiagnosed, the misdiagnosed, and those who have been diagnosed but who are inadequately treated.
Building on their understanding of the relationship between thyroid imbalances and mental and emotional symptoms, in Thyroid Mind Power, they have characterized five different "Types" of thyroid patient.
* Moody Mind-Type: These patients are frequently depressed, suffering from mood swings, and experiencing negative thinking
* Edgy Mind-Type: These patients feel anxious, panicky, irritable and angry.
* Foggy Mind-Type - These patients may have attention deficit disorder, or experience memory loss, or even dementia.
* Sleepy Mind-Type: These patients may suffer from insomnia, narcolepsy, or have non-refreshing sleep.
* Needy Mind-Type: These patients frequently suffer from eating disorders, substance abuse, and addictions.
For each one of these "types," Thyroid Mind Power features an in-depth discussion of the characteristics, how to get properly the thyroid and underlying other hormonal balances properly diagnosed, and the various treatment options, including medications, vitamins and supplements that fit into each treatment approach. The holistic and integrative approach is t complemented by recommendations regarding nutrition, stress reduction, exercise, bodywork and mind-body approaches, as well as the Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbal recommendations of acupuncturist Georjana Shames.
One of the greatest strengths of the book is its refusal to provide a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, the Shames team demonstrates several decades of expertise working with thyroid patients, recognizing that thyroid treatment that different types of thyroid issues and patients require different treatment approaches. To that end, Thyroid Mind Power discusses a full range of synthetic, natural and compounded thyroid medications as part of the treatment recommendations. The Shames also demonstrate a strong and intuitive understanding of the relationship between adrenal health, thyroid health, and symptoms including anxiety, outlining practical approaches to help bolster adrenals along with thyroid, for optimal hormonal, mental and emotional health.
Richard and Karilee Shames are authors of two other highly respected and popular books in the required thyroid patient library, Thyroid Power: Ten Steps to Total Health, and Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled?: A 3-Step Program to: Restore Thyroid, Adrenal, and Reproductive Balance, Beat Hormone Havoc, and Feel Better Fast! I'm thrilled to see they've now turned their smart and passionate focus toward this well-researched, compassionate and advice-filled book that looks at the effect that thyroid imbalances can have on mood, mental health, and energy.
